Oh dear. Having been a Maximo Park apologist for many years now, i've landed the new LP 'Quicken The Heart' and i'm sorry, it's 3rd album blues. Either that or they're actually loads better and my taste in "indie guitar" music still tragically errs towards embryonic bands with gusto & spirit but no "technical ability" "It's just not as sharp as before" utters the astute Paul Smith on the forgettable opener 'Wraithlike'. The songs have a bit more of a clunky sound to them, less feral & breathless. They've slowed down a little, the bass sounds more muscular & they're still referencing everything from Pulp, Roxy & The Futureheads. They still sound the same distinct Geordie troubadours so what could be wrong? It does sound like they're just doing a job now. I can't remember the tunes - not even the (awful) single - 20 seconds after they've finished. That's a damn shame cos some of the old classics still make me weep a bit at their exuberance and passion. I can't bring myself to write this album off, for rabid fans i'm sure there'll be much bounty on here but it's not for me. If the single made you grit your teeth, don't fret, there's better "anthems" on here but much like the majority of Indie "heroes" on the 3rd hurdle, they've fallen and grazed their knees rather badly. The CD does look super deluxe, all embossed with a bonus concert disc hailing from Newcastle Arena and a photo booklet but that's not gonna cheer me up is it? on Waaaarp
