Bromst by Dan Deacon

9/10 Li'l Biz 26 March 2009
OK, first thing I notice about Dan Deacon's follow up to the inspired 'Spiderman of the Rings' is that 'Bromst' is massive in scope, gigantic some would say. It seems to the way to go in 2009!!! Big, bigger, MASSIVE! This record is epic and is definitely the sound of a man who is willing to up the ante and join the indie rock elite securing his place next to Animal Collective and the like. I've only listened to the first two tracks but this rekkid is already making me beam sunshine rays around the world and it's only 10 a.m!!! Yes! Opening track 'Build Voice' is gigantic, blissed out number of the like I hear alot of at the moment sounding like early Flaming Lips but with a tighter electronic pulse. 'Red F' is when it really kicks off proper with Dan Deacon clearly displaying great skill in electronic composition whilst not coming off sounding as Nathan Barley about as he did on 'Spiders...'. It's still danceable and full of intensity and energy but comes across sounding a little more mature, only a little more mind and that's just fine with me as I like my music to have a little charm and sense of humour, in fact it might be the most important criteria for making a great record. I can hear Dan Deacon's personality in each and every song and he sounds like the kind of guy I'd love to meet. Deacon likes to weave his tracks together taking in a little of everything as he works and it really works to his favour on this epic 70 minute record. He's the Wham City equivalent of the maddening genius of Max Tundra or the mind bending insanity of Quintron with the only difference being that you can hear the ambition in the sounds. Dan Deacon is taking it to the next level whilst not forgetting to have fun along the way. I won't go on about it further you just make sure the take a few minutes out and take a listen.
