The Balky Mule is the nom de plume of one Sam Jones, a bedroom folk-popster who has his debut album 'The Length of the Rail' out on Fat Cat. A sweet Ray Davies-esque voice tops off a smart collection of lo-fi gems, ranging from rattling acoustic tropicalia excecuted in an early Beck style, wonky wistful eccentric pop, disjointed, hazy organic folk that owes as much to the off-kilter vision of Steve Malkmus as it does the anti structuralism of Jandek. There's some well tranpled electronic embellishment all over this recording, some truly mesmeric touches that enhance the rustic, shambling charm of the songs. Having taken 5 years to complete, this is a coherent & unique labour of love that wouldn't sound out of place on a little DIY imprint such as Slow Loris. Each tune, either vocal or instrumental has bags if warmth, charm & experimental kudos underpinning it's homely folksy personality. Lovely!
