Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear

Grizzly Bear’s ‘Veckatimest’ is pretty hard to pinpoint to any particular genre. It’s got elements of pastoral folk, flourishes of psychedelia, hints of autumnal indie rock and warm chamber pop. The Brooklyn group hit a home run with the crossover hit ‘Two Weeks’, seemingly because they opted for more structured songwriting rather than the pastoral sprawl of their first two records.

Now truth be told, I haven't got the most sophisticated music taste sometimes and the last Grizzly Bear album, 'Yellow House' being as lauded as it was, did little for me. I prefer more feral & demented pleasures much of the time, or straight chill out so I sit there floppy eyed like Dylan the Rabbit or grinning like a stoned Cheshire cat. On newie 'Veckatimest' they're a-shitting in my ears with a slightly baroque, harmony drenched sound that often bears resemblance to the Beach Boys school of honey'd 'n hazy classical pop. I think there's occasionally also parallels with Animal Collective but with the arrangements gentler & much less day-glo tribal techno. There's an undoubted passion & elegance within these songs and many rich, melodic layers and incredibly pleasant production frills ocuring througout this batch of downtempo grand-pop nuggets. I can hear bits of The Kinks, Bolan, late Beatles, Pink Floyd & early Bowie strongly all over this record, it's quite spaced & progressive but like I say, there's no doubting the intrepid musicianship throughout. Fink is, I wus bekoming bored ov my tits so I fell asleap in the korner. ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZz. CD & LP innit.

As I do love the mellow, soft-toned 'chamber-pop' as people call it, the album itself wasn't much of a leap from their previous ones - but comparing it to bands like Animal Collective and Beach Boys is a bit crass... I respect opposing views on what I like, but to compare them to fluke-artists is nothing short of ignorant...
