Mark Sultan - enigma, mentalist, shaman, rock 'n' roller, hopelessly nostalgic mate of King Khan - releases a brilliant 50's surf styled rock ballad called 'Hold On' through Sub Pop. This could be one of those long lost Joe Meek productions, it chugs along with this sad Shadows-esque guitar refrain doing the talking when his Gerry Marsden style holler isn't breaking beehived girls hearts. This is the record that makes you close your eyes and do a slow pelvic roll in your room, missing the love of your life while she's on a cruise with her sleazy boss in the Bahamas. This is the record you take home to Grandma to re-assure her that the world is still a wonderful place & you can still court a girl without instantly giving her multiple STDs & can still order a knickerbocker glory from the diner and not get stabbed on the way home by a gang of PCP'd up werewolves. The flip is a wonderfully brooding cover of the Meek Man's 'I Hear A New World' that sounds like the most eerie space-voodoo anthem ever, one to indulge your inner alien. It ends with a sudden shooting star of plaintive feedback that is simply the cherry on top of a cracking piece of vinyl. It's on rather wonderful dinked pink wax with a designer reverse print sleeve that has a cloud lining chomped out of the top by some record cover devouring paperworms. Just perfect!
