7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 26th October 2014

Canadian singer-songwriter A.C. Newman’s second solo album is typical of his sound: melodic, up tempo, well constructed indie-pop songs. He’s no rookie either as he was chief songwriter in 90s band Zumpano who were signed to Sub Pop and is the main man in Canadian supergroup The New Pornographers.

Bombastic opener, “There May Be Ten Or Twelve” starts things off well. “Like A Hitman, Like A Dancer” and “Prophets” two highlights of the album. “Submarines Of Stockholm” recalls “Twin Cinema” era New Pornographers but not quite as fully realised. There has definitely been a Beach Boys influence to most of his melodies throughout his career but “The Changeling” displays instrumental and arrangement leanings in that direction too. Its anthemic chorus makes it one of the album’s best songs. This is certainly a recommended purchase for anyone who likes original, melodic indie.
