Weave are a 4 piece from Los Angeles, 2 girls, 2 boys and they've got a mini album out on Pacific records. I keep on thinking the first track is called 'Matthew's in Stereo' but alas it's 'Mouthpiece Hysteria'! Slightly wonky female harmonies erm..weave around this delightful off-beat stew of skeletal, airy & spacious new wave funk, recalling notably ESG, Pylon & Delta 5. There's some love ...

There's some lovely afro-beat hints on this all-too-brief record, a real sense of freedom & also some jump-up joyous skank to proceedings. Yes 'Bravery' has as much in common with the SKA movement as the tender dark days of the post punk movement. 'Make Out Bandits' has this lovely spiralling organ motif amongs the tambourine fuelled funk and 'Laveau' has this brilliant eerie Shadows-esque spy-guitar sketching out it's path amongst some compulsive primal voodoo rhythms. Each time you play the record you find yourself immersed in this addictive celebratory tribal pop that's every bit as fresh as it is in debt to feral off-kilter bands such as Kleenex & The Raincoats. The press release is pretty spot-on for a change, I think this record is rich in identity & full of cool little numbers that bounce off each other, rubbing shoulders and dancing spider-like, barefoot & ecstatic. Ace!
