I did that last Sun Araw thing they did with Predator Vision so I thought I'd probably have no words left to do another of their LPs so soon afterwards but luckily this sounds quite different. Looking at the press release it seems The Phynx is a vinyl reissue of their debut CDr which makes sense as it's got a far harsher feel than Beach Head and Boat Trip..He's obviously gone soft in his old age, just a year or so later. On the fantastic first track there's a man hollering, wailing, overloading the mic and distorting all over the place as the music drifts between structure and total formlessness; there's something about the combination of ethnic sounds with atonal abrasion that brings to mind the globetrotting experimentation of prime post-punk and no wave. Most of the LP follows that sort of pattern with his trademark hazy psychedelic drone relegated to the background, although the copious amounts of echo are very much present and correct. We've enjoyed this one lots and lots!
