One of Justin Broadrick's most sonically adventurous and lesser known pseudonym's Final has been chipping away at his vision since the 80's. The Final releases have been sparse but what is available is some of the most diverse and experimental material the artist has ever created. 2006's '3' was one of my favourite releases of the year so when a new CD on Utech arrived yesterday I could barely contain my excitement. 'Dead Air' is a 9 track headfuck. The material on offer really does not relate to any known time or space, the sounds are positively alien. Ranging from abrasive dense noise textures to phasing high frequencies to the low slung bass doom of 'Fearless Systems' with its stunning melody evoking visions of an apocalyptic landscape. 'Smeared Air' makes me feel like I'm an atom... man this stuff can really take you places. This is Broadrick at his most abstract, consistent, uncompromising and thought provoking. This disc will take pride of place in my collection.
