Stanley Brinks is on the cover of his album looking like a bit of a tramp and he doesn't sound that far from one either, listening to Dank U I'm reminded of a more downtrodden, less comedic Al Duvall. We're not really sure what the correct name for that style is but it does feature huge mounds of lyrical storytelling that's heavy on the quips and deadpan wordplay (all available to pour over at your leisure on the insert). Phil reckons he sounds a bit like David Byrne and I'd have to agree, there's the same kind of weird awkwardness to the delivery. The music provides a spare accompaniment to these oddball tales of life, love and (occasionally) dirtyness.. Although the odd Marc Ribot-y solo gets busted out from time to time which sits strangely, but pleasantly, at odds with the general tone. I'm really enjoying it on this second listen, with the odd actual LOL escaping my body. The Wave Pictures turn up on a track too! Vinyl only on Ciao Ketchup.
