Contender for next years Brit Awards is Tom James Scott in the Best Pastoral Guitar Plucking category. He has just released a CD on the Bo 'weavil label called 'School and Rivers'. Its a very nice waltz through the vagaries of rural English modern folk, a nod to Bert Jansch there, James Blackshaw here a slab of John Fahey over there mixed in with periods of silence and some more distracted, viola scraping interludes. When it all comes together as on the wonderful 'Elephants' it brings together school-hall piano, music box melodies, a metronome and gorgeous guitar plucking to devastating affect. Fans of Big Eyes, Haushka, will also find something to grab onto from these laid back, lazy melodies.
