An album from Glasgow people Remember Remember has found its way into my pile of victims and frankly it's far too nice to deserve such a fate. Reminiscent of bands like Battles, OOIOO, Tortoise and Animal Collective whilst occasionally surfing completely different styles altogether, this self-titled effort is never anything less than lovely. All sorts of textures and tempos are experimented with, from the tropical post-disco of the opening track to the fifth which sounds like Gareth S. Brown being remixed by Four Tet. At a point in time where we're constantly being swamped by identikit post-rockers this really is a breath of fresh air, harking back to the time when the term described music that was actually interesting and innovative rather than completely formulaic and predictable.. The dreaded arpeggios do rear their heads but there's nothing to fear from them, Remember Remember keep things interesting through their fantastically creative use of samples throughout the LP, throughout you'll hear them used melodically, harmonically, as textural backings underpinning the entire song - you name it really. If you took some of Steve Reich's DNA and created a little Borrower-sized family of clones this is what they'd sound like as they ran around living their bright, happy little lives. It's a little ray of lush sunshine this one!
