Soft Black Stars was he 15th album by folk-based experimentalists Current 93. Originally released in 1998, the album came 15 years into the band’s career. This remastered 2LP reissue features two additional versions of closing track Chewing On Shadows, never before released on vinyl. For the curious and uninitiated, Antony & The Johnsons recorded their own version of the title track for their I Fell In Love With A Dead Boy EP. Double LP on The Spheres.

Probably my favourtite Current 93 LP this one. It's based around the piano, and David Tibet's unmistakable vocal delivery, and bizarre lyrics. This seems to be the sticking point for some of course. It's easy to accuse Tibet of sounding a bit like a pretentious sixth former pouring their heart out through the medium of poetry at times, but I feel that is grossly unfair. He is unique for sure, and if you are prepared to embrace the atmosphere created on 'Soft Black Stars' whilst staring mournfully out of the window on a winter afternoon, then this is about as beautifully melancholy as it's possible to get. Just try not to swoon with the intensity of it all as it's reissued on 2LP and you'll need to get up to flip the record over 3 times.
