Finally my personal most anticipated release of the year 'Dancehall - The Rise Of Jamaican Dancehall Culture' compilation on Soul Jazz has arrived and I'm relieved the wait is over. Available as a 2CD set or two separate volumes on double vinyl it is a fabulous snapshot of the genre's development from 1977 through to 1993. Basically stopping when it all got a bit too gangsta and the raggamuffin style became very aggressive and a lot of the best deejays left Jamaica. The track selection is second to none with a heavy dose of classics as well as obscurities. I'm very familiar with a lot of the material on here which is great as this serves as a wonderful collection of tunes I've adored over the years, many of them bringing back happy memories of good times with friends staying up late at night and listening to 45's obtained from visits to stores in London carrying fine selections of Jamaican imports. Smoking ganja and laughing at the hilarious banter between deejays on rough soundclash cassettes. Featured artists include Yellowman, Tenor Saw,Pinchers, Ini Kamoze, Junior Murvin, General Echo, Cutty Ranks, Barrington Levy, Lone Ranger, Super Cat, Gregory Isaacs, Cornell Campbell, Eek A Mouse, Frankie Paul,Half Pint, Trinity, Clint Eastwood and loads more. A mighty fine selection with some of the most entertaining lyrics and infectious rhythms ever committed to vinyl. A good focus on the 80's An extremely well compiled set by Steve Barrow that really only scratches the surface of this vast culture but is a great beginners guide. I was surprised that Tiger is not on here but I suppose there isn't room for everyone. The sleevenotes are informative and the photographs by Beth Lesser are fantastic. Highly recommended if you wanna nice up the area!
