- Another Version Of Pop Song by Rose Elinor Dougall
9/10 Brett Staff review, 03 December 2008I feel I should let the record state that I did my best to avoid having to review this Rose Elinor Dougall single. It puts me in a difficult situation, because Rose and I are to be married. Well, I'm actually marrying a massively resized picture glued to a mannequin I found in a skip but let's not split hairs. So what if her foot's trapped in a rusty toaster and her face is all pixellated.. It's good enough for me, OK? Don't you want me to be happy? We're not hurting anyone! It's clearly a horrible conflict of interests so it's fortunate in this case that the record lives up to the fawning praise I always would've given it, fair and impartial judge that I am. 'Another Version of Pop Song' is Rose's first solo release since she and RiotBecki left The Pipettes and it's a sweet, intelligent bit of indie pop with a touch of folky whimsy that manages to be understated in some ways (the lyrics and lo-fi keyboard lines) and lush in others (the layered sounds, subtle effects and her rich voice); there's a bit of a balancing act going on but it totally works, coming together to form a lovely couple of minutes that leave you feeling just that little bit better about horrible old life. There are big hints of synthy art poppers past and present - The United States of America in the twiddly little bass runs, Stereolab in the gentle motorik beat and Au Revoir Simone in general - all filtered through a bright, breezy pop sensibility. God only knows why I'm blathering on anyway, it's been up on Myspace to listen to for ages so just go on there and see what you reckon. We all think it's dead good though! Out on 7" only via Scarlett Records and limited to 500.. That's probably enough to get you to Christmas number one in these days of record industry apocalypse, isn't it?
10/10 domo Customer review, 19th October 2008I stumbled upon this via Fluxblog and have been listening to it over and over for the past 30 minutes. The quality of her voice, a sound not heard since Cass Elliot, is lovely and intelligent. And the song is brilliant, deceptively simple yet devastating. She is someone I'll be watching for some time. Thank you.
10/10 Brian Hargreaves Customer review,
Heard this on Marc Riley last night and pre-ordered the 7' today. I never liked The Pipettes, but i like this. A lot.
