Not knowing anything about Last Step prior to putting this 1961 album on, I was just about to write 'this sounds like it belongs on Planet Mu' and, lo and behold, it is actually on Planet Mu. That's like, totally messed with my flo'. Reading down to the press thing I have learned that this is Aaron Funk of Venetian Snares fame which surprised me because those things are usually full of absolute bollocks that's of no use to anyone, but here I am actually being enlightened. What you get here is highly proficient electronica as you might expect, brighter in tone (and packaging) than his releases under other names.. It's actually got an early/mid '90s sort of feel to it (think Tango N' Vectif or the retro-sounding Analord stuff) combined with his trademark insane drum programming.. There's maybe a touch of some of Clark's stuff about it too. Occasionally the in vogue sounds of wobble and chiptunes rear their heads but for the most part this is a fairly 'classic' sounding outing for the foul-looking man. It's not quite for me (plus points for the TB-303 use that goes above and beyond the call of duty though) but it's undoubtedly high-grade leccy.
