8/10 Clinton Staff review, 17 October 2008
Clinton here being rationed with ONE just ONE record to tell you about. It's by Ipso Facto who are from the cultural hotbed that is Southend on Sea, its called 'Six and Three Quarters' and we hear that they they apparently are 'like a female Horrors'. Don't let that put you off this is a lot better than that. It sounds very much like Siouxsie and the Banshees with some Raincoats/Slits and Cardiacs thrown in. The musicianship is very good and it has an 'edge'. Hopefully this will not get sanded down over time until they sound like everybody else. The A side is what we know in the biz as a 'top tune' with vocal melodies that I would describe eloquently as 'dead good'. The B side starts out sounding remarkably like wonderful early 80's film noir pop experimenters Wall of Voodoo with twangy guitar and harmonicas intertwining before a female vocal comes in coiling itself around everything. The rhythms here are wonderfully lop sided. Interestingly its produced by John (not Joan) Rivers who did The Specials 'Ghost Town' and wierdly enough you can kind of tell. Very impressive for a debut single. This one is limited (on Mute) and is definitely worth picking up.
