New York trip-out merchants Gang Gang Dance once made my ex feel sick when I played her 'God's Money' a few years ago. She was hungover and munching a greasy egg butty at the time so maybe it wasn't the disorientating, wonky madness vomiting out of the speakers but her own regretful indulgences! In 2008 however, they've crashed landed on Warp with their 'Saint Dymphna' album and if it ain't a gorgeous old treat then I don't know what it is. This mad, bad old art clan have perfected their spiritual acid flecked tribalisms., lost some of the clattering discordance & concentrated on rhythm & atmospherics that really transport you somewhere. Along with Telepathe, they're doing something quite colourful with their music, mashing up vibrant stargazing synths, a dash of punk funk, some cool polyrhythms, wildly flowing female vocals swooping around like a crazed aviary, slow tempo tribal techno segments, trans-global world music touches and a bit of loose math rock pummeling, like a more feminine Battles. Once again the world of organic & electronic is blurred into a safari of scintillating sound, a free spirited orgy of mid 90's ambient techno vibes with the itchy art school loft experimentation of contemporary NY, a riot of sound indeed. This is definitely where Warp should be concentrating their attentions.
