A cool little split CD now, democratically shared between Port Royal and Absent Without Leave. Magnitogorsk comes packaged in a fold-out cardboard sleeve with transparent insert and fifty different cover photographs to go between the run of five-hundred discs. Always nice when people go the extra mile! There are four tracks from each artist, Port Royal's are proper swoony eyes-closed post-rock that conjure up images of forlorn harbours with ships drifting in and out of fog, occasionally into a small pocket of pwetty pwetty sunlight. Their last track on here is particularly lovely and the sparingly used electronic elements are very well done. Absent Without Leave follow a similar sort of template to the quieter tracks on recent Mogwai albums, the guitar sound is incredibly similar and some of the electronic effects are too.. Things get more interesting when the beats come in and it goes all Arab Strap on us. Plus points for the use of an accordion on their second track too!
