Tail Swallower and Dove by These Arms Are Snakes

Imagine if your arms were snakes, that would be fun wouldn't it? Instead These Arms Are Snakes are a Seattle art rock and post hardcore collective known for throwing Fugazi shapes all over the place. Their third album Tail Swallower and Dove eschewed some of the proggier aspects of previous records for a more cohesive collection. Originally released in 2008 it now has a re-press on Renal Failure coloured vinyl. Don't ask.

Comes on like vintage Fugazi early, then the keyboard burbles kick in at the end of "Woolen Heirs" and the album becomes something else entirely. Honestly, while I'm a fan, I was a little afraid that this album would just be 'more of the same'. I'm pleased that These Arms Are Snakes continued with the sound we're accustomed to while keeping things dynamic and interesting. TAAS experiment without being experimental --they still have the foundation of traditional rock. However, they aren't afraid to throw in some fancy percussion, keyboards or even voice synth.
