The Door? The bloody Doors, more like. Religious Knives feature members of noise princes Mouthus and drone cavaliers Double Leopards coming together to do some proper rock band type stuff. I've felt different things about this album each of the three times it's been on, the first I thought it sounded like it might be a potential future album of the week, the second I thought it was 90% cack and this time around I'm thinking it's a good, solid album. Someone really needs to tell the bloke to stop doing those Nick Cave impressions though. Actually, quite a lot of this album reminds me of Your Funeral.. My Trial, my favourite Bad Seeds LP, it's almost as if they've listened to 'The Carny' on a loop and gone off to try and recreate that sort of feel over a full album. Hmm, I'm changing my mind again.. I think this is really, really good. It could be the way Wooden Shjips sounded in my head before I'd actually heard them and been (just a teensy wee bit) disappointed, taking that Doorsy psyche thing and melding it with more pronounced elements of drone and noise-rock with clanging, tribal percussion to seal the deal. I think with a few more plays I could well be as keen on these as I am on the members' main groups..
