This is pretty cool.. The Ghastly Grimey Orchestra (of New Orleans apparently) have a self-titled CD out in a lovely hand-printed cardboard sleeve with a ghoulish graphic on the front in black, white and blood red.. One of the best three-colour combinations going I reckon. This lot have got a great sound, it reminds me a lot of Gareth S. Brown in that it sounds like some relic from a bygone era but filtered through a modern avant-garde sensibilty. Barroom pianos, detuned horns, wheezing accordians and broken music box sounds all create a mental picture of phantoms playing in a long-abandoned ballroom with only a very slight notion in the back of their minds that no-one has been listening for a very long time. I'd compare this quite favourably with Rachel's, which is pretty high praise!
