Peter Green is a modern classical electronic sound artist who delves into the darker realms of the human soul with his cinematic scores that spill with ghostly malevolance & magical widescreen brilliance. His 'Macbeth' opus for Rephlex is a strange journey if I remember it, giving a rather grim play a new coat of creeping wrongness. He's been doing installations for a long time now, my favourite being that he was commisioned by Mick Jagger (!?) for a soiree of some sort once upon a recent time. 'The Darkness' is a tasty surprise then, a right old creeping aural stalker that's landed with us at the towers. There's only 50 of these and from the start you get enveloped in waves of dark ambient synth and intermittent ghostly voice splicing, preceeding a gorgeous sombre piano track that makes you think of European lovers having a final, sad dalliance. Then comes the heavy waves of deep classical, like Wagner crossed with Henryk Gorecki scoring a Hitchcock film. There's a track that just screams alternative theme to Pan's Labyrinth, lots of screeing, haunted synth strings around, making you nervous but titilated. Overall you're getting a beefy opus full of some very dramatic, moving and unnerving music by someone heavily talented, a real visionary pro. This is the lovely sloth-like Cataclyst's second release, all nicely assembled black CDrs in clam shell case 'n' that, no'd in a right witchy sleeve in my eyes!
