This Thrill Jockey reissue of Trans Am’s 1998 sophomore LP The Surveillance is one for those of you wishing to bulk out your collection of classic noise-rock records. Listening to this album now, it’s easy to put yourself back in the cultural space that this thing emerged from. The dystopian paranoia of both the record’s Shellac-style guitar screes and nervy, Aphex Twin-ish electro is the same sort of vibe you get from contemporaneous artefacts like The Matrix. The Surveillance’s track titles - ‘Endgame’, ‘Home Security’, ‘Extreme Measures’ - only add to the sense that you’re being watched.

Can instrumental music tell us something about surveillance? An interesting attempt to prove it can, and one of the few records that addressed the subject in the pre-9/11 US.
