10/10 Gareth Richards Customer review, 27th April 2016
It's been around 18 years since my work colleague sent me off to purchase this CD for him. I picked it up from the local record store, and as I wasn't seeing him for a few days, I took it home and gave it a play. As soon as I heard those huge chords hit at the start of Hospital Roll Call, my life was changed forever. Lanegan's vocal refrain of 'Sixteen' intrigued me, the reverse guitar solos confused me, but goddamn if this wasn't the most amazing thing I'd ever heard! At the time I was a 16 year old lad, who pretty much only listened to hip hop (!). This was a breath of fresh air.
Scraps At Midnight is as dark and brooding an album as you can get. It's equally beautiful as it is intense. 8 melancholy tracks, book-ended by 2 huge, distorted numbers. This album always reminds me of winter, but there is a certain warmth to Mark Lanegan's voice, like a fire-damaged duffel-coat. :-)
THIS was the album that changed my life.
