Following up a classic like the Violent Femmes debut was always going to be a big ask. However, Gordon Gano had saved some classics for Hallowed Ground, such as Country Death Song, which he wrote in 10th Grade. Gano did use Hollowed Ground to display some of his Christian beliefs, lyrically taking the band in a different direction.

- Hallowed Ground by Violent Femmes
7/10 Jack Customer review, 18th September 2015
This album totally caught me by surprise, I instantly loved it when I heard it for the first time. It's the Violent Femmes but a total turn around from their first album. I had heard Gordon Gano had some sort of religious awakening and that is why this album has the religious overtones on it. I am not a religious person, but I was able to get past this change in Gordon's lyrics and even with the religious touches on it, it's a very dark album. If you're a true Violent Femmes fan you should give it a chance.
