This Semifinalists 'Last Pretending' 7" is weird, it's like they're doing some kind of 80s medley with really poorly chosen songs or something. There's big cheesy synths and limp guitar chugging with a ludicrous Steve Vai solo as well as some little drum machine bits that just sound like an 808 ripoff on it's factory settings being used by a confused, annoying child playing silly beggars with daddy's machines. There might be the nugget of something decent in here but the song goes from one thing to another so often that it's pretty much impossible to tell. The remix of another tune on the B-side is vastly superior precisely because it sticks to one thing and concentrates on doing it well rather than chucking loads of half-baked gumph into the mix. Ant reckons it might appeal to anyone who was into that Neon Neon LP, I'd add that if you're still watching Dallas you might get something out of it too.
