Adrian Younge
Black Dynamite (Instrumentals / Original Motion Picture Score)

Director Scott Sanders made 'Black Dynamite' as a parody of the Blaxploitation genre, about a spy on a mission to take revenge on his brother's murderer. The score was composed by Adrian Younge, and was his first ever release. Like Sanders' film, it's inspired by and sends up the music of Blaxploitation cinema, utilising synth, keyboards and organs as well as sax and soft percussion. 'Black Dynamite' shows that Younge has a firm understanding of the tropes that made this genre so prominent. On 'Black Dynamite (Instruments / Original Motion Picture Score)', Younge offers up the instrumentals that comprised the film's score.

Alessandro Cortini
Sonno

Though Alessandro Cortini is better known as a member of Nine Inch Nails, you don't need to be a fan of Trent Reznor's industrial unit in order to appreciate his solo work. This, his debut album, is a heartbreakingly gorgeous affair with spellbinding cracked electronica bringing to mind Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works and the Caretaker. Now back available as a limited edition of 400 copies. Don't miss out.

Never Really Been Into It

One for all you fans of gothy ethereal 80's referencing music that in another world would have emerged on 4AD with a Vaughan Oliver sleeve. This is a duo from North Carolina who use the regulation drum machine, affected guitars, wobbly bass and octave leaping vocal delivery of the Cocteau Twins. Its a little bit more straightforward than the Cocteau's but uses all their tricks to make some really ecovative music. This is their first new record in 10 years following a successful re-issue of their overlooked at the time 2003 release 'Static Crash' For fans of: Lush, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, The Cure

Ballet School
The Dew Lasts An Hour

Ballet School don't actually have all that much to do with ballet, but their music is as terrifically melodramatic, with huge vocal performances supplanted into a backdrop of sparkling 80s synth-pop. 'The Dew Lasts an Hour' sounds like if Purity Ring were more straight-forward, and has hints of a less morose Chromatics too. Bella Union have released "Cherish" from the record, which is full of vocal show-boating and marching indie rock drums. Let's get loud.

Boards of Canada
Tomorrow's Harvest

I still remember the excitement in the office when the promo of this turned up and the real effort we all went into of trying not to be disappointed. It sees Boards of Canada eschewing slightly their rich and textured sound for something more cold and dystopian. To that end it slightly follows in the path of artists who were also looking back at the works of the likes of John Carpenter for inspiration. Not as warm and inviting as previous records but spin it slowly and with patience and there's a myriad of evocative high points to enjoy from these masters of their genre.

Flying Lotus
Until The Quiet Comes

2012’s ‘Until The Quiet Comes’, the fourth studio LP from Flying Lotus, represents a hugely important step in the producer-composer’s career. While previous FlyLo releases had touched on jazz - both earthly and spiritual - these influences had largely been incorporated to serve the producer’s ultra-whacked brand of hip-hop and neo-IDM. However, on ‘Until The Quiet Comes’ we find the one born Steven Ellison creating notably lusher work that draws heavily on the sounds of Alice Coltrane and Sun Ra. Synths and beats still play a part, but the way that Ellison prioritises harmony and reverie here paved the way not only for subsequent FlyLo triumphs like ‘You’re Dead!’ but also the great records we’d get from The Comet Is Coming and Floating Points later in the decade. Thundercat, Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke contribute.

Ten years since the original release, Domino reissue Four Tet's Rounds on CD and vinyl. Further
Where Were You Then?

Further were an early 90s indie rock band indebted less to the wordy, snarky bands around them and more to the slow, sludgy guitar jams of bands like Dinosaur Jr; just listening to "Filling Station", the guitar duelling instrumental that opens to 'Where Were You Then?', is proof of that. Further were super lo-fi and fit snugly into an indie rock scene that went on to eclipse them. Their own brand of noisy, no frills rock fun is available again with 'Where Were You Then?', courtesy of Bad Paintings.   Tracks: Filling Station Over & Out Generic 7 She Lives By The Castlr 5. Guided By Voices
Cool Planet

Nice price on this post-reformation album from  the ever-busy Guided By Voices. Most of their 'classic line up' stuff between 2010-2014 was pretty decent but by Cool Planet they were perhaps scraping that particular barrel clean. Still, there's plenty of lo-fi sludge to wade through here in search of the odd sparkling gem and it's probably going to be the last Pollard/Sprout collaboration for some time.

Inter Arma
The Cavern

With 'Sky Burial', Inter Arma chose two aggressively imposed types of heavy music -- sludge and black metal, respectively -- and put them together them like they were twins. On 'The Cavern', though, they make something singular even for them, a forty minute composition in just one song, making for a hard, long metal slog that takes after Om, Sleep and Electric Wizard in its unravelling doom spirit. Recommended for fans of Pig Destroyer taking a break from grind to do the whole 'Natasha' thing.

Joanna Gruesome / Trust Fund
Split EP

Fuzz is love: this split EP sees noise punx Joanna Gruesome continue their persistent assault on our indie rock ears with their pissed off shoegaze and gleefully screamed vocals. On the other side, though, there's also the one-man-band Trust Fund, which belongs to Ellis Jones, who makes a sound that lands between grainy indie rock and unhinged folk punk, and who has definitely listened to Neutral Milk Hotel in his time on this good planet.

Jorge Elbrecht
Coral Cross - 001

‘Coral Cross - 001’ is the debut release from Jorge Elbrecht (Lansing-Dreiden, Haunted Graffiti, Violens) new metal project. Following his collaborative work with Ariel Pink and Caroline Polachek (Chairlift) this record sees Elbrecht move into new stylistic territories, from the tearing Bay area thrash metal intro A side to the lo fi sounding, depressive and rhythmically broken B side.
