A Certain Ratio
To Each (ACR Loco Edition)

'To Each' captures A Certain Ratio in their post-punk roots just before they got a little too interested in jazz and wearing shorts. Here they combines Ian Curtis-style vocals with funky dance-pop sensibilities, and proto-Happy Mondays guitar sounds. A brilliant blend. Dance and be miserable at the same time.

Biosphere
Angel's Flight

Biosphere's latest project is certainly ambitious. The twelve tracks of 'Angel's Flight' are based upon Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 and blend modern-day electronica, hauntological sonics and classical composition in a hitherto-unheard way. The music was initially composed for a dance production 'Uncoordinated Dog', a show which explores exposure and beauty.

Boris with Merzbow
2R0I2P0

The pounding, thrilling experimental rock of Boris meets the noise artistry of Merzbow on this face-melting collaboration album. Intended as a way to bid farewell to the end of this miserable year, ‘2R0I2P0’ is collegiate throughout its ten tracks, with each artist acting as a multiplying force for the effects of the other.

David Lewis Gedge
Go Out And Get 'Em, Boy! Tales From The Wedding Present: Vol One

‘Go Out And Get 'Em, Boy! Tales From The Wedding Present: Vol One’ by David Lewis Gedge, the chap who was the leader of Leeds indie legends The Wedding Present. The twist here - and it’s a good one - is that it’s presented in the form of a graphic novel. This first volume works its way from Gedge’s childhood to the formation of his band and the faltering relationships that inspired those brilliant lyrics.

Django Django
Glowing In The Dark

Scottish clever-clogs Django Django have long followed their nose with regard to their music, pushing the sound into new and exciting shapes. Their latest album 'Glowing In The Dark' is all about escape and uses squelchy synths, live drums and churning bass lines to create vibrant modern pop music. Certainly lyrically and music, 'Glowing In The Dark' is aiming to take the listener somewhere else other than 2020 drudgery/misery.

Harmonia
Complete Works

Sadly (and inadvertently) timed to coincide with the death of core member Dieter Moebius, we have here the Complete Works of Harmonia. That’s a whole five albums by the pioneering komische-electronicists, including a live album and Tracks And Traces, their collaboration with Brian Eno. Grand deluxe vinyl box-set with all the trimmings.

Higher Intelligence Agency
Discatron

Established in 1992 by Birmingham-based electronic music producer Bobby Bird, Higher Intelligence Agency releases a brand new EP entitled ‘Discatron’. Named after a type of portable 7” record player invented in the city during the Sixties, 'Discatron' is four tracks of intelligent, fluid electronica designed for headphones .

Hjaltalin
Hjaltalin

Their first proper studio album in eight years, ‘Hjaltalín’ by the Icelandic indie-rock band of the same name serves as a microcosm of their sixteen-year career to date. Hjaltalín's fourth LP, this record contains elements of ‘Terminal’s sweeping grandeur and the downcast moroseness of ‘Enter 4’, their last outing prior to this one.

Hodge
Remixes In Blue

Hodge (aka Jacob Martin) released his first full-length album 'Shadows in Blue' in 2020, a record which successfully blended his club sensibility with a more experimental bent. For the remix version of 'Shadows In Blue' he has chosen artists who will bring out the more dancefloor-friendly side to his sound. Bristol's Facta & K-Lone rub shoulders with Shanti Celeste, Manchester producer aya and long-running whizz Surgeon on an essential annexe to the original LP.

Jay Richford & Gary Stevan
Feelings

Generally held to be one of the best (and rarest) ever albums in the ‘library music’ genre, Jay Richford & Gary Stevan’s beloved 'Feelings' makes a reappearance on vinyl. The record explores everything from loose-limbed funk to orchestral-based jazz. Originally issue in 1974 on the Italian Carosello label.

Jesu
Never EP

Intended as a companion piece to the 2020 studio album ‘Terminus’, Justin K. Broadrick’s post-Godflesh outfit Jesu presents a five-track EP of new music. Although it plays around in the liminal space between industrial, electronic experimentalism and shoegaze, ‘Never’ cleaves to recognisable pop structures.

Kiwi Jr.
Cooler Returns

Kiwi Jr. are a three-piece out of Canada who, as the name suggests, take influence from their antipodean cousins on the Flying Nun label and beyond. The name of Pavement looms large in their catchy slacker-rock style, one which has already spawned a well-regarded LP 'Football Money'. Sub Pop picked them up for this second effort - one which, on the basis of immediately hummable single 'Undecided Voters', could brighten up all our Winters.

Orville Peck
Show Pony

Enigmatic Canadian country singer Orville Peck follows his 2019 debut LP ’Pony’ with an EP ‘Show Pony’. There are guest appearances here from none other than Shania Twain, as well as Duncan Hay Jennings of Canadian indie rock band FRIGS. The record also features a cover of Bobby Gentry’s 1969 song ‘Fancy’.

Pauline Anna Strom
Angel Tears In Sunlight

Following the 2017 archival release of ‘Trans-Millenia Music’, electronic music composer Pauline Anna Strom - better known to some as Trans-Millenia Consort - delivers her first album of new music in over three decades. Exciting! ‘Angel Tears In Sunlight’ is utterly timeless stuff, fitting in perfectly with a treasured discography that Strom's cult fanbase have always beloved. Heavy synth work for fans of Terry Riley and Caterina Barbieri.

Salvatore Mercatante
The Foundations Of Eternal Sin

New York-based artist Salvatore Mercatante makes his debut on Castles In Space with ‘The Foundations Of Eternal Sin’, a gorgeous album of darkwave. Coldly minimalistic yet imbued with unmistakably human emotion, the album follows up a brace of wonderful Giallo soundtracks that Mercatante has made and which Castles In Space will also be reissuing.

Sarathy Korwar & UPAJ Collective
Night Dreamer Direct-to-Disc Sessions

Sarathy Korwar's album 'More Arriving' was one of 2019's most standout jazz releases. Now he's back again, with the UPAJ Collective in tow, to deliver the 'Night Dreamer Direct-to-Disc Sessions' - a straight-to-acetate recording session that mixes 'authentic Indian classic music' with spiritual jazz. Fans of anything jazz need look no further. Out on Night Dreamer.

Teenage Fanclub
Endless Arcade

‘Endless Arcade’ is the tenth studio album by Scottish indie legends Teenage Fanclub - but, significantly, it is also the band's first since the departure in 2018 of long-time co-lead vocalist and songwriter Gerard Love. Former Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci frontman Euros Childs comes into the line-up to plug the gap left by Love. Fortunately, such a profound shift hasn’t thrown the Fannies out of their stride - treading the fine line between heartbreak and joy, this new album fits neatly into their rich discography.

The Black Keys
Brothers (Deluxe Remastered Anniversary Edition)

The Black Keys were relatively successful as a kind of run-of-the-mill blues-rawk band until they made 2010's 'Brothers'. The title refers to the duo's relationship - it had hit sticky times in preceding years, but they put all that in the past for this career-breakthrough LP, one recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals recording studio. Now for its ten-year anniversary you can buy it again - including on a 9 x 7" box set which will help your fitness levels as you get up and down from the sofa to change the record after every track.

The Notwist
Vertigo Days

German boffins The Notwist have been at it for a rather long time now. They are probably best known for their 2001 album 'Neon Golden' but have continued to press their sound into various new shapes over the years - a process which continues with 'Vertigo Days'. The band take the opportunity to work with different voices and other musicians on an ambitious album which is made for deep listening and full attention spans. Everything from Pavement to Einstürzende Neubauten is recalled.

Thundercat
Fair Chance (feat. Ty Dolla $ign & Lil B) [Floating Points Remix]

The last Thundercat album was nice but does anyone else think he's writing the same song over and over again? Whatever, it's a nice song - and on this remix EP you can hear four different versions of one of those nice songs, the Mac Miller homage 'Fair Chance'. This EP includes an album version, an instrumental, an a cappella and most excitingly of all a Floating Points remix. He's got a lot of mileage out of that song...
