Ana Roxanne
Because Of A Flower

Following the release of 2019's excellent ‘~~~’ EP, Los Angeles-based musician Ana Roxanne announces a full-length album via Kranky. Consisting of songs dealing with gender identity - Roxanne identifies as intersex - ‘Because Of A Flower’ is a masterclass in generating mood through economy and texture. Beautiful synthscapes to file next to Domenique Dumont.

Boris
Amplifier Worship

Although they should probably rename themselves at some point due to their moniker becoming increasingly tarnished (especially here in the UK), Boris are one of the finest proponents of heavy music. 'Amplifier Worship' is the band's 1998 debut album. This is possibly as intense as they got - ear-crushing music that draws favourable comparisons with Melvins. Remastered black vinyl edition on Third Man.

Boris
Absolutego

This is the debut "single" from Boris, though we use single in the loosest sense of the word because one of the tracks is 60 (sixty) minutes long. I'm not exactly sure how they've squeezed 'Absolutego' onto vinyl but if anyone can then Jack at Third Man can. Droney post-metal of the highest order that captures the band at their most intense, now reissued and remastered.

Deafheaven
10 Years Gone

Deafheaven have been expanding what metal can be since 2010. The San Franciscan band were about to go on tour for their ten-year anniversary but were unable to do so - bloody Coronavirus. Instead, they went into the studio with producer Jack Shirley and recorded ‘10 Years Gone’, a live session featuring the songs they would have taken on the road. It includes an absolutely blistering version of their earliest song ‘Daedalus’ along with powerful takes on classics such as ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Dream House’.

Dirty Projectors
5EPs

The five EPs that Dirty Projectors released throughout 2020 are gathered up in this set. Dave Longstreth shares the spotlight in this series, with each of the current band members taking lead vocals on a four-song EP each - Maia Friedman on ‘Windows Open’, Felicia Douglass on ‘Flight Tower’, Longstreth himself on ‘Super João’ and Kristin Slipp on ‘Earth Crisis’. All four trade vox on the fifth and final EP ‘Ring Road’. Phew.

Don Spencer and The XL5 / Barry Gray and His Spacemakers
Fireball / Zero G

Double A-side featuring two tracks from the soundtrack to Gerry Anderson’s 'Fireball XL5'. Side A shows of the 'Fireball XL5' title-track by Don Spencer and the XL5 - an early 1960s orchestral pop tune that will answer the question “Where did Mike Flowers get his inspiration from?”. On the flip is ‘Zero G’ by Barry Gray and his Spacemakers - a Joe Meek-esque futuristic instrumental.

Emma-Jean Thackray
Ley Lines

British composer, producer and general polymath Emma-Jean Thackray reissues one of her hard-to-find early EPs on her own Movementt imprint. Released in 2018, ‘Ley Lines’ was the moment that Thackray's groovy neo-jazz style began to find a wider audience. 'Ley Lines' was nominated for awards and plugged by the influential Gilles Peterson, wasn't it.

Emma-Jean Thackray
Walrus

British composer and producer Emma-Jean Thackray reissues one of her hard-to-find early EPs on her own Movementt imprint. First released in 2016, ‘Walrus’ saw Thackray marrying the brass music she mastered in her youth with intricate, jazzy grooves to begin shaping the sound that’s now getting her so much attention in 2020.

Interpol
Our Love To Admire

Although we can mock (and The Guardian already did) about literally every album getting the re-issue treatment, 'Our Love To Admire' was one of Interpol's strongest albums. Dark brooding post-punk that showed there was life in the band after the so-so 'Antics'. If their self titled fourth album gets re-issued though with the same treatment then a line will have been crossed.

James Blake
Before EP

Definitely-not-at-all-sad-or-teary electronic songwriter James Blake is back with a new EP which celebrates his roots and his London clubbing days. If anyone can remember how good Blake's early non-vocal EPs were then you might be ready for a belated return to that sound. 'Before' gets halfway there, but also maintains the blue-eyed R & B sound that he's been dealing since.

Julien Baker
Little Oblivions

‘Little Oblivions’ is the third studio LP by US singer and guitarist Julien Baker. On previous albums she has poured out her soul, sparsely backed by guitar or piano, but this time out her indie-rock/indie-folk/slowcore musings come fleshed out with bass, drums, mandolin, keyboards and banjo. If previous records ‘Sprained Ankle’ and ‘Turn Out The Lights’ are anything to go by then this will be well worth parting with your cash for. Also, 'Little Oblivions' Baker's first solo album since collaborating with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus in Boygenius.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Live In San Francisco '16

Whilst touring their 2016 album ‘Nonagon Infinity’, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard played one of their final club gigs, before moving on to bigger venues, at The Independent in San Francisco. Needless to say, the Australian psych-rock band blew the roof off the place with a high energy, yet precise performance. ‘Live In San Francisco '16’ is a blistering listen from start to finish. Oh! to have been there.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
K.G.

Praise be! A new studio album from psych-rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is something to keep our spirits up in the benighted context of lockdown. On 'K.G.' Stu Mackenzie and his merry men seem to offer up a distillation of all the best bits of their disparate discography, channelling familiar sounds and techniques into something new.

LICE
Wasteland: What Ails Our People Is Clear

‘Wasteland: What Ails Our People Is Clear’ is a long-awaited first full-length album for Bristol-based punks LICE. One for fans of resolute outsiders such as Squid, Fat White Family, Girl Band etc., but there’s also an unmistakably experimental foundation to what the quartet have built here - most notably with the use of a hand-constructed "noise-intoner".

Nancy Sinatra
Start Walkin' 1965-1976

‘Start Walkin' 1965-1976’ is a new twenty-three-track compilation providing a detailed overview of the most prolific period of Nancy Sinatra’s career - yes, including her duets with Lee Hazlewood. All tracks are remastered from the original analogue tapes, and all versions come with a booklet containing liner notes and an interview with Sinatra herself.

Richard Youngs & Daniel O'Sullivan
Twelve of Hearts

Released on Tim Burgess’s O Genesis imprint, experimental musicians Richard Youngs and Daniel O’Sullivan - both members of the label’s roster - team up for ‘Twelve of Hearts’. A rigidly consistent song cycle based strictly on four chords and constructed over the course of several months at opposite ends of Britain, the album shows the riches a minimalist palette can bring.

Sigur Rós
Odin's Raven Magic

Originally premiered back in 2002 at London’s Barbican Centre, ‘Odin’s Raven Magic’ - a musical adaptation of a fifteenth-century Icelandic poem, written by Sigur Rós, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, Steindór Andersen and Maria Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir - finally sees the light of day as a recording. The cinematic soundscapes honour the ambience and drama of the poem, but contain flourishes of modernism.

The Besnard Lakes
The Besnard Lakes are the Last of the Great Thunderstorm Warnings

Canadian indie-rock/shoegaze outfit The Besnard Lakes are dropping their first studio album in nearly half a decade. A sprawling seventy-two-minute continuous suite of songs, ‘The Besnard Lakes Are The Last of The Great Thunderstorm Warnings’ encapsulates everything brilliant about the band and ought to be remembered as their magnum opus.

The Staves
Good Woman

‘Good Woman’ is the third album by indie/folk sister trio The Staves. The record was recorded following a period of bereavement and broken hearts - as the sisters see it, they’ve taken control of the bad experiences by making this album. With their ability to harmonise the way they do, the extra emotion that’s gone into this LP makes for a stunning listen.

These New Puritans
Hidden [MMXX]

Domino marks the tenth anniversary of These New Puritans’ stunning second album ‘Hidden’ with an expanded reissue. ‘Hidden [MMXX]’ features a second disc of unreleased tracks and live recordings from the time, plus a live film. A decade on, the album is an enduring testament to Jack and George Barnett’s singular vision, a visceral collection of futurist chamber-pop that’s both menacing and beautiful. Influenced everything from Night Slugs to David Bowie, did this.
