Anna B Savage
A Common Turn

'A Common Turn' is the debut studio LP from London artist Anna B Savage, a former touring pal of Father John Misty and Jenny Hval. Produced by William Doyle (f.k.a. East India Youth), this an album of symphonic chamber-pop swells and sparse, cavernous quiet sections framing a voice communicating both insecurity and confidence.

Causa Sui
Szabodelico

'Szabodelico' is the sixth album by Causa Sui, the Danish psych-rockers led by Jonas Munk. With each release the band look to progress their sound, and this one is no exception. It took form through some loose, high-spirited jams before Munk mixed and added a few - but not too many - overdubs to make the final album.

Craven Faults
Enclosures

Craven Faults makes music that is inspired by the landscape of post-industrial Yorkshire and German electronic music of the 1970s. The 'Enclosures' mini-album (comprised of three tracks but still clocking in at a meaty thirty-seven minutes) follows a series of EPs and the dramatic, calming and ultimately brilliant debut full-length 'Erratics & Unconformities'. Here the central theme is how human impact on the world is seen as progress, particularly in the northern half of England. It's one for the kosmische fans among you.

Dope Body
Crack a Light

Baltimore power trio Dope Body split in 2016 after endless touring and recording, but now they're back! Here Dope Body return with 'Crack A Light', their first album in five years and fifth album in all. The band’s trademark energetic rock is all present and correct, a pounding sonic assault seasoned with guitar loops and effects. On Drag City.

Drive-By Truckers
The New OK

One year, two studio albums, a live album - Drive By Truckers are putting all their unspent touring energy into releasing records in 2020. 'The New OK' follows their excellent album 'The Unravelling'. The songs were recorded during the same sessions as 'The Unravelling', and what started as an EP quickly expanded to be their thirteenth album. It features heartfelt Americana songs inspired by protests, pandemics and politics.

Grandaddy
The Sophtware Slump ..... on a wooden piano

The Sophtware Slump ..... on a wooden piano by Grandaddy is a reworking of the band’s classic second album which was originally released in 2000. Grand grandaddy Jason Lyttle spent a while sourcing the right instruments in the right studios to make the right sound and then the pandemic came and forced him to change his plans. He recorded the album at home, and rather than being annoyed by the lawnmowers, traffic and noisy birds he made them part of the record.

Greg Puciato
Child Soldier: Creator of God

You know when you set out to make an album with your band, in this case The Black Queen, and what you make is just not right for the band? Well that’s how Greg Puciato’s debut solo LP, 'Child Soldier: Creator of God', came about - though it does still sound quite like The Black Queen, and also his old outfit Dillinger Escape Plan. Puciato played all the instruments (with the exception of drums, which were played by original DEP drummer Chris Pennie), and he describes the songs as a bunch of ‘misfits’ which he decided made a great album.

Keeley Forsyth
Photograph

Keeley Forsyth's 'Debris' was one of the suprise breakouts from 2019. Originally an actor who has appeared in programs such as 'Happy Valley', 'Luther' and 'The Casual Vacancy', her debut album was an honest and brooding work, quietly magisterial, with comparisons made to Scott Walker, Joni Mitchell, and Arthur Russell. 'Photograph' is the follow-up release to 'Debris', a 4-track EP that "takes two steps on from 'Debris'’ electronic closer ‘Start Again’". Out on The Leaf Label.

Late Night Final
A Wonderful Hope

Late Night Final is J. Willgoose from hauntological space-rockers Public Service Broadcasting. During lockdown, with PSB recording sessions on hold and without access to his usual gear, Willgoose found a bunch of synths, assorted other bits/bobs, and began making new music. 'A Wonderful Hope' began life as an ambient album and grew from there. Notable influences are Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and KLF’s classic 'Chill Out' album.

Matthew Halsall
Salute to the Sun

'Salute To The Sun' is the 8th album by trumpeter, composer and Gondwana Records boss Matthew Halsall. He has a new band behind him on this one made up from some of Manchester’s best young jazz musicians, although Halsall's long-time aide Gavin Barras features again on bass. The album balances playfulness and earthiness, inspired by ambient field recordings of jungles and rainforests - represented here by various percussion instruments.

Meitei / 冥丁
Kwaidan / 怪談

Sold out - sorry!

Meitei / 冥丁
Komachi

Hiroshima resident Meitei = 冥丁 follows last year’s cassette on Evening Chants with something perfectly in step, but exchanging eeriness for more meditative nostalgia. A lo-fi intertwining of contemporary and ancient Japanese society by way of sample play, melodic structure and folkloric reflection.

Michael Price
Eternal Beauty (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Here we have a blue marbled-vinyl issue of Michael Price’s stunning soundtrack for Craig Roberts’ 2019 dark comedy 'Eternal Beauty', starring Sally Hawkins, Alice Lowe and David Thewlis. A masterful exhibition of sound design making use of soaring string figures and isolated piano, Price’s music renders Hawkins’ character’s story arc with great beauty.

Nubiyan Twist
Freedom Fables

Soul-jazz collective Nubiyan Twist follow up 2019’s 'Jungle Run' with 'Freedom Fables'. The album features a number of guest musicians, something which expands the band’s already far-reaching sound. Vocalist and regular collaborator Cherise, sax player Soweto Kinch and Ghanian legend Pat Thomas all contribute whilst Ria Moran, a new vocal talent, gets her first taste of the limelight. Good stuff like.

Paradise Cinema
Paradise Cinema

Recorded in the Senegalese capital of Dakar with percussionists Khadim Mbaye and Tons Sambe, 'Paradise Cinema' is the eponymous debut album from the new project by former Portico Quartet and Szun Waves musician Jack Wyllie. An impressionistic sonic patchwork inspired by the sounds of the city’s night-time life, it’s an engrossing listen that hovers on the edge of drone, fourth-world and contemporary classical styles.

Public Memory
Ripped Apparition

Public Memory explore the dark places of abstract lo-fi electronica mixing up the digital and the organic and topping off their synthesized sounds with emotive vocals. Their new album is a narcotic and claustrophobic affair that takes the noises from the past forces new ideas and melodies from them. Sometimes they let a bit of light in but this is an intense and gritty affair.

PVA
Toner

Following the acclaim surrounding the release ‘Divine Intervention’ late in 2019, London trio PVA arrive on Big Dada with a new EP entitled 'Toner'. As well as three new tracks of slinky punk-funk which have been produced by Speedy Wunderground’s Dan Carey, 'Toner' also contains a trio of remixes from Mura Masa, Lynks and Girl Band’s Daniel Fox.

Rick Simpson
Everything All Of The Time: Kid A Revisited

Ever wondered what Radiohead’s 'Kid A' would sound like as a jazz record? Well, wonder no more - pianist Rick Simpson has made 'Everything All Of The Time: Kid A Revisited', a jazzy reworking of the Oxford band’s groundbreaking rocktronica classic. This LP has been made to commemorate the original album's twentieth anniversary. On Whirlwind Recordings. I wonder why this wasn't called 'Kid B', or maybe 'Kid J'...

The Chameleons
Return of The Roughnecks (Live at The Ritz Manchester)

Manchester post-punks The Chameleons return to their hometown, thirty-five years after they formed, for 'Return of The Roughnecks (Live at The Ritz Manchester)'. The record sees the classic line-up of Mark Burgess, Reg Smithies, Dave Fielding and John Lever playing songs from their first three albums: 'Script Of The Bridge', 'What Does Anything Mean, Basically?' and 'Strange Times'. Both florid like Talk Talk and stirring like A Flock Of Seagulls.

LIVE DRUGS

The music here has been taken from more than forty hard drives which were used to record many, many gigs throughout the band’s career. Notable highlights include 'Buenos Aires Beach', 'Under The Pressure', 'In Reverse' and their version of Warren Zevon’s 'Accidentally Like A Martyr'.

Trees Speak
Shadow Forms

'Shadow Forms' is the third album, and second for Soul Jazz Records, by Trees Speak. The Tuscon, Arizona brother-duo are heavily influenced by the motorik rhythms of Can and Neu!, the spooky prog of Italian band Goblin and the sounds of the New York no-wave scene. This all adds up to 'Shadow Forms' being a pretty good time.
