Ben Lee
Grandpaw Would

Oh lord is it really 25 years since Ben Lee's debut on Grand Royal? That time has just flown by. A previous member of Noise Addict and Gerling, Lee was about 12 when he released his first solo work which you can hear from his early Evan Dando worshipping single I Wish I Was Him.  The album has been remastered and now includes a bonus LP of demos, outtakes and covers.

Black Pumas
Black Pumas

Black Pumas are soul duo comprising of Adrian Quesada of Brownout and Grupo Fantasma and the previously unheard of but undoubtedly talented Eric Burton. Chapterhouse
Whirlpool - The Original Recordings

Key shoegaze outfit Chapterhouse have a treat to share with you here, in the form of all the original recordings that would go on to become their debut album Whirlpool. Furthermore, some tantalising extra tracks are present. Gnarly, heavy and heady, this is a key document of what was going on in the early 90’s for those with their ears to the ground. On Space Age Recordings.

Cherry Ghost
Live at the Trades Club Hebden Bridge

The Trades Club is an excellent concert establishment in Hebden Bridge (when lockdown is done we should go) so its no surprise that so many bands flock there to play special, intimate shows. Pop classicists Cherry Ghost played a set there in 2015 which someone taped and is now being released as a final album from the band before they go on hiatus. Good Northern songwriting performed in at atmospheric northern building surrounded by excellent hills. What more could you want?

Dolls
Eggshells

Death Waltz started out as purely a soundtrack label but with Death Waltz Originals they have been veering off into non soundtrack releases. The latest is by Dolls an impossible to Google outfit who unleash their second EP which is chock full of garage riffs, pounding drums and infectious melodies. The EP comes on a 12" slab of vinyl with four tracks on the A side, none on the B side but instead you get an etching.

Drew Mulholland
A Haunting Strip Of Marshland: Ness Original Soundtrack

Out on the well regarded Castles in Space imprint is this vinyl pressing of Drew Mulholland's soundtrack A Haunting Strip Of Marshland to Adam Scovell and Robert MacFarlane’s file film “NESS”. The film is an eerie adaptation of the duo's book about a nuclear testing station on the Suffolk coast. Mullholland provides the perfect hauntological soundtrack full of strange dissonance and with lots of tape slicing and manipulation.

Emma Tricca
St. Peter

Emma Tricca’s first LP since 2014’s Relic is another record of delicate, dreamy folk-rock. Devendra Banhart and Jane Weaver spring to mind on tracks like the gorgeous, feathery ‘Julian’s Wings’. St. Peter also features a pretty star-studded credit reel - members of Sonic Youth, The Dream Syndicate and Paper Dollhouse all make appearances.

Ennio Morricone
Peur sur la ville

On the actual day he dies we get an Ennio Morricone soundtrack to add to the site. Though the record industry is known for regularly not letting artists bodies go cold before the re-issues start, this must surely be a coincidence. It's Morricone's 1975 soundtrack for the French film Peur Sur La Ville (Fear Over The City), remastered from the original tapes with a second disc of bonus tracks previously unseen on vinyl.

Field Music
Field Music (Measure)

Measure was probably the biggest haul of Sunderland art rockers Field Music so far. The sprawling album contained 20 tracks of their clever meanderings that recall the likes of 10CC, Sparks, Prince, Talk Talk, David Bowie and literally anyone who has done something interesting with guitar music over the years. You're going to have to put in a long shift to get through it but the rewards are many.

The new Gang of Four 12"  is a must-have tribute to their late guitarist Andy Gill who passed away earlier this year. This EP project comes in two parts - Anti Hero and This Heaven Gives Me A Migraine  - both of which contain brand new Gang of Four material alongside a tribute by singer JJ Sterry and some spoken word pieces from Andy. Gemma Ray
Lights Out Zoltar

Very underrated is Gemma Ray  - one of those idiosyncratic songwriters who pretty much does as she wants however out there and possibly this explains why she isn't the household name she should be. Her second album Lights Out Zoltar saw her make a kind of dark take on Phil Spector's girl group sound - the sort of lavish psychedelic sound that saw her later collaborate with veteran pop oddballs Sparks.

Gruff Rhys
(Don't) Welcome The Plague As A Blessing / The Babelsberg Basement Files

If you've ever listened to Gruff Rhys's Baselburg album and wondered what the demos sounded like then here's your chance to hear them on vinyl. It features the songs in their raw format before the studio sweetening began and even Gruff Rhys says they aren't altogether different from the final product. Still, a capturing of the process from an always fascinating musician.

John Massoni & Sonic Boom
The Sundowner Sessions

Space Age are really pumping out the Sonic Boom releases this Record Store Day and the latest is this collaboration with electronics whizz John Massoni. The pair recorded it in Seattle in 2000 and it was only released on CD at the time. Boom is credited as playing 'custom human voice synthesizer' which sounds pretty fascinating and this re-issue has been remastered especially for 2020 ears.

Kelley Stoltz
Crockodials

Regular guitar pop guy Kelley Stoltz recorded his full album cover of Echo & the Bunnymen's 1980 album Crocodiles back in 2001 but it only just snuck out on a tour CD in 2006. Still, it won him a place playing guitar in the legendary Liverpudlian's live set up on their 2016 tour so now is the time for a vinyl re-issue which contains a bonus 7" of his recording further Bunnymen covers aged 14!

Kelly Finnigan
The Tales People Tell (Instrumentals)

Kelly Finnigan hit paydirt with his debut album the Tales People Tell in 2019 at the grand old age (relatively) of 37. It was worth the wait however as he perfectly tapped into a deeply soulful sound with nods to Al Green and Marvin Gaye. If you want to hear his extraordinary voice you are looking in the wrong place as this is a one time pressing of the instrumentals so you can try to replicate that falsetto yourself (I tried with macabre results).

Larkins
Hit & Run

Larkins have long been touted as the next big thing from Manchester. The band play a stadium-friendly form of widescreen rock music that has synthetic nods to the 1980s but contains a lot of the bluster also seen in the 1975. Hit and Run puts four of the pouty four piece's songs in one place cementing their reputation as a one to watch.

Lee 'Scratch' Perry
Lee Scratch Perry meets Daniel Boyle to Drive the Dub Starship through the Horror Zone

Lee Scratch Perry and Daniel Boyle have already collaborated on countless releases but this time they've met with a particular aim in mind. Loop
Sevens

Loop were one of the most lauded bands of the 1980s - their dissonant trance rock sounds going on to influence scores of musicians and having a heavy hand in the '90s shoegaze and noise rock scene. Sevens takes three of their 7" releases, re-presses and re-cuts them and presents them in a spot varnished slip case.

Love Fame Tragedy
Five Songs To Briefly Fill The Void

You may not know Love Fame Tragedy by name but if I said it's the collaborative solo project of the Wombats singer Matthew "Murph" Murphy then I can actually feel your excitement levels rise. Metal Mirror
English Booze

The English are good at booze - see last weekend. We should have all been dancing in the pub trying to drink away the spectre of 650000 deaths to this little gem from 1980. It was Metal Mirror's only release and  - as you might have guessed - a DIY metal anthem all about the wonders of booze. Loud and heavy fun remastered with replica artwork.

Mikal Cronin
Switched-On Seeker

If you are a fan of Mikal Cronin's Seeker album and (as I'm sure many of you were) wanted a synth-based re-work of the entire thing then today is your lucky day. For reasons only known to himself Cronin has re-worked the album in the vein of Wendy Carlos' "Switched-On" series. Keeps him out of mischief I suppose. One time pressing on Merge.

Mush
Great Artisanal Formats

Following on from their recent 3D Routine album comes a batch from Leeds post-punk noisters Mush. This 7" EP is in the tradition of those great extended 7"s we all know and love containing five new bursts of their inventive tunesmithery. 6 Music are way behind these guys who have done so many Marc Riley sessions that their van must surely know its own way to his studio by now.

Contains all the tracks from their early EPs and some bonus stuff too. Brilliant indie/dream pop from a band at their peak.

Predatür
See You Here

Classic guitar boogie from 1982 and the only single released by Predatur. The umlaut might give you an idea that Motorhead influences are prevalent but there's also plenty of Status Quo esque no nonsense pub boogie on this. A very rare record and highly collectible. This re-issue is remastered with a replica sleeve of the rather marvellous artwork.

Sarathy Korwar
Otherland

This 12" on the Leaf Label is a counterpoint to Sarathy Korwar's recent More Arriving album and features two brand new tracks featuring poet Zia Ahmed as well as remixes by Auntie Flo and Emanative. As you can see, the artwork makes reference to the UK's immigration process, mirroring Korwar's experiences of living in this sorry sickened isle having arrived from India.

Skyzoo + Pete Rock

Slowdive
Slowdive EP

It has been a full 30 years since Slowdive's debut EP which is going to make any shoegazer feel their advancing years. Luckily their sound has not dated one iota and actually seems more in fashion than ever. What better time then for a re-issue of this three tracker which actually was the original demo that the band preferred to the studio recordings of the same songs. Comes with an alu-brush coating to the sleeve which makes it all shimmery.

Sugarhill Gang
Sugarhill Gang

Sugarhill Gang could be said to be the world's first rap group and although their output was fairly mild compared to the later likes of Wu Tang Clan, they were hugely successful and influential scoring worldwide hits with the likes of Rapper's Delight. Terrahawks
Theme Music and Audio Story

Terrahawks was a Gerry Anderson produced series that ran from 1983 to 1986 but guess what? They are bringing it back. And to celebrate there's a vinyl release which features the original '80s theme tune plus a full cast audio story complete with music and sound effects. The theme is actually one of the most downloaded of Gerry Anderson - affiliated output  - second only to Thunderbirds so here is a rare chance to get it on wax.

Terry Hall
Home

Terry Hall. You'll know him as the grumpy frontman of the Specials, the Fun Boy Three and the Colourfield. Less is known perhaps about his debut album Home which landed in 1994. The album features collaborations with Craig Gannon (former 5th Smith) as well as Andy Partridge (XTC), Nick Heyward (Haircut One Hundred) and Ian Broudie (the Lightning Seeds). The album has long been out of print and impossible to acquire. Now is your chance.

The Leaf Library
About Minerals

Shapeshifting London collective the Leaf Library are possibly more known for their gently rolling kraut - influenced dream-pop sound. On About Minerals they change tack somewhat towards more ambient textures which match guitar drones with dreamy vocals and field recordings. It brings to mind the drifting textures of the likes of Pan American, Fennesz and Biosphere.

The Wake
Here Comes Everybody

If I said it was 35 years since Scottish pop people the Wake released Here Comes Everybody then you might not believe me but it is true. The only band to appear on both Factory records and Sarah records, the band played an artful brand of synth-pop that sat somewhere between New Order and the Postcard records lot. In a word (or two) highly influential.

Unremembered, Remembered

Fans of 4AD mainstays the Wolfgang Press may have been forgiven for thinking they'd heard their last note from the band as they ceased operations in 1995. However this album exhumes tracks they started towards the end of their career making it to all intents and purposes the final Wolfgang Press album that no-one has heard yet.

Vaselines / Pooh Sticks
Dying For It

One of those split singles where one band covers the other band's song but with a twist as the Vaselines play the Vaselines and the Pooh Sticks play the Vaselines also. You'd be forgiven for thinking this was 1988 or something but as far as I can see this is a modern day release - the sort you could have only dreamt of back in the day. Classic fun time indie-pop for all ages.

Warmduscher
European Cowboy

We fell out with Warmduscher pretty early in their career on but I suppose it was our (ok...my) fault. Since then they have titled an album Tainted Lunch and all is forgiven - all friends again. On this 12" the exciting London based band get the remix treatment from the likes of Soulwax, Decius and Savage Gary creating a dancefloor edge to their sleazy garage rock racket.

Working Men's Club
Megamix

Hebden Bridge wonderkids Working Men's Club were at something of a loss having had their much anticipated debut album delayed until October. So wonderfully named frontman Syd Minsky-Sargeant got together with producer Ross Orton to make a 21 minute non-stop 'megamix' taking elements from the forthcoming work but creating brand new groove-laden textures. One of those crazy ideas which might just work.
