Actress
Karma & Desire

'Karma & Desire' is the eighth studio LP by electronic musician Actress (aka Darren J Cunningham of Wolverhampton). Coming hot on the heels of '88', his self-released effort from earlier on in 2020, 'Karma & Desire' is a moody collection of edge-of-the-dancefloor beats and synthetic abstractions reminiscent of Funkineven and Hype Williams. The record includes collaborations with Zsela, Sampha, Aura T-9, Vanessa Benelli Mosell and Christel Well.

Adrianne Lenker
songs and instrumentals

After the global pandemic prematurely ended Big Thief’s tour the band's singer, songwriter and guitarist Adrianne Lenker decided to make some new music. 'songs and instrumentals' is two separate albums being released as a double-LP and double-CD. The 'songs' bit features - guess what - eleven new songs, whilst 'instrumentals' features - that's right - two instrumental pieces. Both records were written and recorded in April 2020, the early days of lockdown, and both exhibit the incredible balance of strength and fragility that has seen Lenker proclaimed as something of a modern-day Leonard Cohen.

Autechre
SIGN

SIGN is album number fourteen by Rochdale’s finest, Autechre. The revered electronic duo seem to have kept this one well under wraps. However, according to some things they have said on online, this looks like it’s the first of two new albums they have completed in recent months. Keep yer eyes peeled!

Bluetech
Prima Materia

Alongside spanking new album 'Underwater Cities', Bluetech and his Behind The Sky imprint release a second vinyl and CD edition of his first album 'Prima Materia'. Initially put out back in 2003 on Waveform Records, this new version has been meticulously remastered on analogue hardware for increased clarity, fuller presence, depth and richer harmonics. Mars-1 has provided third eye-popping psychedelic artwork suggestive of the light show behind the eyelids that 'Prima Materia' can produce. Bluetech's reconfiguration of his ambient, dub and IDM influences still sounds fresh in 2020.

Bluetech
Underwater Cities

Behind The Sky label bossman Bluetech returns with some submerged sci-fi modular and analogue synth work, vividly creating visions of his fantasy 'Underwater Cities', perfectly mirrored in the Moebius-inspired sleeve art by UK illustrator Guy Warley. Here we find producer Evan Bartholomew coaxing warm, vintage bubbling Detroit school electro from his classic Roland machines; SH-101, TB-303, TR-808 and Juno 60. At once playful and immersive, there are echoes of early Higher Intelligence Agency, Kirk Degiorgio's lush electronica, Dopplereffekt/Drexciya's aquatic sonics and the nuanced electro that Gerard Hanson made as ERP.

Chapterhouse
Blood Music

Chapterhouse managed to squeeze out two albums during their existence -  the second of which was 1993's Blood Music. It introduced more electronic sounds into their shoegaze palette and spawned hits that I can't remember in She's a Vision and We Are The Beautiful. This re-issue comes on red transparent vinyl on re-issue specialists Music On Vinyl.

Coil
A Guide For Beginners - The Voice Of Silver / A Guide For Finishers - A Hair Of Gold

A Guide For Beginners - The Voice Of Silver and A Guide For Finishers - A Hair Of Gold are two ‘best of’ compilations by Coil. They were initially released as two separate albums and intended to introduce the music of the legendary experimental electronic duo to Russia. They are now being released as a two CD set as an overview of the duo’s whole career. They’ve been unavailable for over 20 years, so this news should excite fans!

deathcrash
people thought my windows were stars E.P

Another product of London’s burgeoning independent guitar music scene, deathcrash release a new EP on a limited run of 12”s. Recorded and finished just as the country was experiencing lockdown, people thought my windows were stars is preoccupied with personal reflection, sounding massive but also fragile.

I Am Kloot
I Am Kloot

I am Kloot was in fact the second album by Mancunian miserablists I Am Kloot and once again showcased the songwriting prowess of John Bramwell. It is more streamlined that their earlier work but retains the dark heart always at the core of their best songs. Guy Garvey is a fan but please don't let that put you off. Re-issue on Music on Vinyl.

Insides
Soft Bonds

Let's hope that when everything dies down 2020 will not be remembered for a worldwide pandemic but for the return of Insides. Fat chance but we have to take any glimmer of positivity we can. The duo have returned after 20 years during which time the legend around their magnificent album Euphoria has grown. It blended electronica, the Durutti Column-like guitars and ethereal vocals that recalled Bjork and early tasters suggests Soft Bonds will be just as impressive.

Jeremiah Sand
Lift It Down

'Lift It Down' is the new record from Jeremiah Sand, the fictional cult leader played by Linus Roache in the 2018 Nicolas Cage vehicle 'Mandy', and his followers The Children of The New Dawn. Released on Sacred Bones - where else? - and featuring liner notes from the late Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, 'Lift It Down' is a psych-folk record par excellence.

John Frusciante
Maya

John Frusciante steps out of the confines of his Trickfinger alias to release his first electronic/dance record under his own name. Released through Aaron Funk (Venetian Snares)' Timesig label, 'Maya' sees the Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist delve into 1991-'96 UK breakbeat hardcore and jungle. Given that his music in Trickfinger has gradually morphed from Rephlex-sounding IDM, acid and ambient techno into something which hints at drill and bass, this one's set to be a lively affair.

Kevin Morby
Sundowner

Inspired by a move back to his native Kansas from L.A., and recorded to a Tascam four-track in a converted shed with, 'Sundowner' is the sixth solo album from the prolific Kevin Morby. It's an LP which claims influence from the surroundings in which it was made, particularly the sprawling landscapes and open spaces of Middle America. Sound-wise 'Sundowner' is, y'know, Kevin Morby - Bruce Springsteen, Wilco, that sort of thing.

Little Simz
Drop 6

Highly-rated London rapper and singer Little Simz revives her 'Drop' series with a five track EP 'Drop 6'. This is the first we’ve heard from this series since 2015, but it seems lockdown has inspired her to bring it back. 'Drop 6' is a moody EP, but also one which sees Little Simz showing a little (albeit guarded) optimism towards the end. Sonically the record is a rather spare affair from - Kendrick Lamar's 'DAMN.' and Moor Mother's 'Analog Fluids Of Sonic Black Holes' can be discerned in the EP's moody, distorted churn - but it's still one that adheres to Little Simz's unique vision of hip-hop.

Meitei / 冥丁
Kofū / 古風

With 'Kofū 古風' Japanese ambient artist Meitei 冥丁 rounds off an impressive trilogy of albums in which he playfully subverts established norms of the nation’s ancient music traditions. On 'Kofū 古風' we find flashes of hip-hop rhythms and twitches of drum machines punctuating soundscapes made from haunted, fractured piano chords.

Nick Cave
Idiot Prayer - Nick Cave Alone At Alexandra Palace

There he is. A man alone at the piano. Sir Nick Cave. Just like every other musician, Sir Nick couldn't tour during the Covid mess. But unlike every other musician, Cave donned his blackest suit and streamed himself playing without an audience in a big, empty room at Alexandra Palace. The results were, of course, breathtaking - Cave gave a sombre performance which straddled output from his entire career. And now you can own it, under the name of 'Idiot Prayer - Nick Cave Alone At Alexandra Palace', on double-LP or double-CD.

Ploy
Unlit Signals

Unlit Signals is the debut album from Ploy who has previously recorded for Hessle and Timedance. It's a bit of a love affair to old school UK garage and rave with dirty beats aimed at fans of the noisier end of the dancefloor. There is a vital sense of rhythm in these tracks with influence taken from techno and drum 'n' bass in an eclectic series of tracks. A record to take you away from the dread of the real world to some dank dancefloor in a rave outside Rochdale.

Shit & Shine
Malibu Liquor Store

Shit & Shine are known for making weird records that blend a pick ‘n’ mix approach to electronics with elements of noise rock. You never really know what you’ll get with each new LP, a feeling exacerbated by the fact that Shit & Shine release new music pretty frequently. The band's Latest offering ‘Malibu Liquor Store’ goes down a kind of dystopian Motorik path, with the end result sounding like a dream combo of Can and Butthole Surfers.
