Adaye

Turn It Up by Adaye was originally released in 1983. It is a prime cut of South African guitar funk-meets-disco. Al Chem
Metaphysics Of Love

Forging the iciness of no-wave and post-punk with the warmth of soul and electronica shouldn’t really make sense, but Alexander Christou’s latest 12” Metaphysics of Love - recorded under his nom-de-plume Al Chem - somehow manages it. Boasting the title track plus another new track ‘Fistful of Snow’, it also houses remixes from Shahrokh Dini and Michael Reinboth.

After a health scare in the form of a diagnosis of frontal lobe epilepsy two years ago, Robert Tilden started work on his next BOYO album completely on his own. Death Is Not The End
Bristol Pirates

Back in 2018 Death Is Not The End contributed to the Blowing Up The Workshop online mix series. Bristol Pirates constituted something of a left-turn for Death Is Not The End, moving away from early 20th-Century recordings and focussing on the pirate radio sounds of 80’s/90’s/00’s Bristol. Now the hour-long mix has been made available on cassette. As one might expect we find plenty of jungle, dub and trip-hop here, and the whole thing is imbued with the curious ghostliness that characterises Death Is Not The End’s work.

Dizzy
The Sun and Her Scorch

The Sun and Her Scorch is the second album by Canadian indie-pop band, Dizzy. Now, their name suggests indie pop, and they are marketed as such, but their sound here is what you could describe as expensively produced stadium indie pop. This just means that they’re not a bunch of skinny kids from the ‘80s, with messy hair, wearing jumpers etc. This is a much slicker affair but the melodies are there in abundance.

Big Crown Records presents the first album of original compositions from El Michels Affair in 15 years. On Adult Themes, the band’s founder Leon Michels (with help from The Shacks’ Shannon Wise) quickly re-establishes the group’s sophisticated ‘cinematic soul’ aesthetic that they laid down way back in 2005.

Extraa
Baked

You see if you were googling the band Extraa without the additional 'a' you will come up with all the other 'extra' type things on the internet. Like extra soft tissue paper. Thankfully they've added an extra 'a' to the end to distinguish. Now that we know that we can listen to Extraa til our heart is content and what we'll find is a France-based pop band with catchy songs, smooth production and an interest in the classic songwriting of the past. We could have something extraa special here.

Ooh a Family Selection Box and it's not even Christmas. This box contains a gaggle of filmmakers turned musicians from Sheffield who seem to be worried about everything from their cat going missing to the state of the world. France Jobin
Death Is Perfection, Everything Else Is Relative

Like perhaps a lot of us, France Jobin has got pretty obsessed by death in recent times going so far as to dominating the press release with a lengthy splurging theory about parallels between shadow photons and death. It's beyond me I have to admit but this album follows a series of tragedies in Jobin's life and sees the minimalist composer and sound structuralist record a series of modular synth compositions in various locations.

Fuzz
II

Ty Segall’s proto-metal trio, Fuzz are back with their second album aptly named, Fuzz II. The band are in a musical time warp, ostensibly existing somewhere between 1968 and 1973, a time when guitars were fuzzy, and everything was real heavy. Their eponymous debut was a cracking homage to the rock sub-genre, Fuzz II sounds like it’s going to be just as good.

Galaxians
Chemical Reaction

There's very little good news about at the moment so let us try to help you out by announcing a new album from Leeds boogie synth collective Galaxians. The main thing to note is the addition of powerhouse vocalist Emma Mason as a full time member of the band and her voice becomes a vital cog in their productions which have become sleekly stripped back as a result. Time to forget the troubles of the world and get on the (virtual) dancefloor.

Inter Arma
Paradise Gallows

The title Paradise Gallows is a very good one, suggesting that you are doomed, to a brutal old-fashioned death, but also that you long for execution. Perfect tone-setting for the bleak sounds of Inter Arma. The crushing extreme metal climaxes of this album are so inevitable that the band are in no hurry to get to them, circling quietly before releasing the furies. On Relapse.

‘Sculpting’ and ‘craftsman’ are words often used to describe Italian producer, DJ and musician Nuel. This is down to the meticulous way in which he assembles his music. It is also these qualities, along with his revered reputation in the Italian techno underground, that got R&S/Apollo boss Renaat to sign him up. Fantasia is a unique dance album in that you can enjoy it in the surroundings of an experimental club or in the great wide open around a campfire.

Oasis
The Masterplan

In the beginning was the word, and the word was Oasis. Well obviously not, but sometimes it feels like there was no music before The Brothers Gallagher came on the scene and changed British popular culture forever. The Masterplan was a collection of B-sides and live fodder that was released hot on the heels of Be Here Now - a record that has become a byword for bad albums in the 20-odd years since its release - and it still managed to go platinum. Maybe I don’t really wanna know...

Omar S
Fuck Resident Advisor

Well, there's a title to pique interest. Quite what Omar S has against the electronic music site is not made clear, particularly when they have covered his music in detail over the years. Electronic music producers sometimes do display a sense of humour. Anyway, this is new double 12" from the Detroit house and techno producer who is noted for his stripped-back, deep productions is his own FXHE imprint. Features appearances from some of the Detroit/FXHE family; John FM, Rick Wilhite, Norm Talley, and OB Ignitt.

Painted Zeros
When You Found Forever

The second album by Brooklyn New York's Painted Zeros who is the recording project of Katie Lau. She records other bands by night but in her spare time writes and records songs that (it says here) blend punk, fuzzy indie-pop and shoegaze. The song I'm listening to sounds though like a Kate Perry ballad. Will the real Katie Lau please stand up?

Pale Lights
You And I

The members of Pale Lights look to have been around the indie-pop block a few times in groups such as Comet Gain, Velocette and the criminally underrated the Projects. Therefore they cannily put their experience into coming up with the sort of languid, bookish indie-pop earlier peddled by the likes of Felt and the Go-Betweens. Perfect for a laid back summer day.

Pecker
Pecker Power

Here’s a rare example of Japan’s reggae dub undercurrent circa 1980: Pecker Power, by Pecker. The album mixes Japanese musicians like Minako Yoshida with familiar Jamaican original legends like Sly & Robbie and members of The Wailers, for an electronically-augmented cross-continental dub adventure. Philip Corner
Chord/Gong (With Carles Santos)

Composers Philip Corner and Carles Santos met up in New York in 1978 to sit side-by-side at a single piano to record versions of Corner’s pieces, ‘Chord’ and ‘Gong’. The beguiling result was released on a small run of cassettes in the late Eighties, but are now restored digitally by Stephan Mathieu and presented on vinyl.

Pure X
Crawling Up The Stairs

There's a series of re-issues from Austin's Pure X who made a series of albums in the early two thousand and teens that were based on the slowcore type moves of the likes of Mazzy Star and Low.  This 2013 effort dials up the weird coming across as if you are dialling the FM stations in search of lost Galaxie 500 sessions. Worth another listen we reckon.

Pure X

The first studio album from Austin-based outfit Pure X in six years, Pure X clarifies and expands upon all the sonic elements that made them a cult success back then to produce a career-defining masterpiece. Communicated by a mesmerising wall of sound, these are vital statements of uncertainty and anxiety that essay our times perfectly.

Robert Merlak
Finomehanika

Finomehanika by Robert Merlak harks back to the early 2000s combining the distressed, sad tones of Vladislav Delay’s Mulitia (2000) and the sounds Autechre were making around the time of their 2001 Cornfield album. It is perfectly understandable for Merlak to look back to this period as it is when he released his last solo album, Albumski. Despite having these albums as reference points, it is quite unique, blending synthesized sound with piano and field recordings. On SWIMS.

Serginho Meriti
Bons Momentos

Time Capsule prevent a re-issue of one of the seminal examples of Brazilian funk and soul Serginho Meriti's debut Bons Momentos. It was released on Polydor in the early '80s and forged a new sound take on the Black Rio sound blending a funky rhythm section with samba sounds, in vogue synths and vocals which take something from the Fela Kuti blueprint. Long a favourite on the collectors circuit, this is a must for fans of Brazilian music.

Sgt. Elyas
Tubular Moanings Of A Galactic Refrigerator

Hey Sgt. Elyas (Pollet), French guitarist and experimental composer. Is your refrigerator moaning? Yes it is, apparently. In a rather tubular fashion. The album is two twenty-minute works comprising many varied, guitar-driven soundscapes. Drone, ambient, dark ambient and experimental designs leave a haunting taste in the mouth.

Sloath
III

Originating in sessions that began way back in December 2014, it’s taken nearly six years for Sloath to complete their perfunctorily titled third album III. Their minimalist, savagely loud sludge rock paradigm has been rationalised and streamlined even further this time, more steely and groove-based than their last outing Deep Mountain.

Song Sung
This Ascension Is Ours

Produced alongside the esteemed David Holmes and his long-standing creative foil Keefus Ciancia, Irish twin sisters Georgina and Una McGeough present their debut album as Song Sung. Created initially by placing melodies to the sound of bass they could hear floating up from a bar over which they lived in New York, This Ascension Is Ours is filmic and otherworldly yet unmistakably earth-bound at the same time.

Stasis / Phenomyna
Vinyle Inaugural Vol 1

Steve Pickton is an undisputed UK techno legend - his vision of Detroit techno and his productions on B12, Peacefrog etc. are classics. Perhaps his most well-known handle is Stasis, but he's also released records as Phenomyna on Kirk Digiogio's Applied Rhythmic Technology (ART) label among many others. Here we have the second release on his co-owned Fencepice label following an EP under his Soul 223 alias. It features the sublime 'Tau' for the first time on vinyl -- it originally appeared only on the CD edition of his 1995 'Inspiration' album on Peacefrog. 'Travellor' and 'From Afar' also appear for the first time on wax after only being available on Phenomyna's 1994 CD 'Unexplained' on ART. Vinyl DJ's will be glad to finally get their paws on these gorgeous works of celestial, glistening machine soul.

The Rolling Stones
Dirty Work

Despite Mick Jagger and Keith Richards still not getting on too well, The Rolling Stones decided to make a second album where the tension in the studio would reach boiling point. Mick was fresh from his 1985 solo album, She’s The Boss and his collaboration with David Bowie, Dancing In The Street. Dirty Work, originally released in 1986, was the result. Commercially, they did pretty well with the single, a cover of Bob & Earl’s Harlem Shuffle.

Despite being very unfashionable in 1989, The Rolling Stones ploughed on regardless and made Steel Wheels. It was the last album to feature original bassist Bill Wyman. Includes Mixed Emotions, Almost Hear You Sigh and A Rock And A Hard Place.

Thee Oh Sees
The Cool Death of Island Raiders

Thee Oh Sees reissue thee 2006 LP(ee) The Cool Death Of Island Raiders. While John Dwyer et al are garage-punk royalty nowadays, it appears that back in the mid-2000’s they were more interested in mucking about with drones than crafting short blasts of scuzz-rock. While the bones of the band’s later style is apparent in the freak-folk tracks here (think Animal Collective-meets-Jay Reatard) there is also a fair whack of The Flaming Lips to The Cool Death Of Island Raiders.

Vangelis
Beaubourg

Beauborg was Vangelis' sixth studio album and was originally released in 1978. It counts as probably his most impressionistic and abstract work. Inspired by an area around the Pompidou Centre in Paris, Vangelis wrote the music in about a month. It's anti-commercial sound at first was jarring for fans of his work but over the years it has gained traction perhaps for its anti-commercial stance.

virtualdemonlaxative

Huerco S's West Mineral label takes a swerve from the chill vibes with with a gargantuan blast of intensity from virtualdemonlaxative aka Exael, Pontiac Streator, Special Guest DJ and Ulla Straus. It's a pretty face-melting experience, characterised by screeds of digital noise/metal and blasts of broken, irregular beats, with one track even being recorded in a moving car. Arcturian Corridor is a previously unreleased and almost entirely unheard piece of music from Woo. ТПСБ
Whities 031

Not sure how you say that to be honest, but what we do know is that ТПСБ comes from the Russia/Finland border (now that we know that Finland isn't a part of Russia). The artist name is apparently shorthand for "тёмное прошлое светлое будущее", or "dark past bright future" in English. This mysterious producer first emerged with some splintered drum & bass infused electronica on Blackest Ever Black. Not an easy sound to pin down, but certainly the watery soundscapes are shot through somewhat with the coldness of their geographic location. Three new tracks on a limited edition 12" pressing on Whities.
