Catherine Christer Hennix
Unbegrenzt

The third in Blank Forms Editions’ series of archival exhumations of unheard work from Swedish composer Catherine Christer Hennix, Unbegrenzt is a re-imagination of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s famous ‘intuitive music’ masterwork from the late Sixties. Recorded in 1974 alongside Hans Isgren, it’s a fascinating document.

Datblygu
Cwm Gwagle

Another studio album from the reformed, highly influential Welsh experimental act Datblygu. Released on vinyl with bonus download material, Cwm Gwagle was finished under the aegis of producer Frank Naughton just before the country locked down, and sees the band typically play with and blur the lines between reality and fiction.

Happy Dead Man

Vines Grow Between My Eyes is the striking and unique result of a collaboration between experimental musician W. David Oliphant, Fat Gray Cat’s Michael Pistrui and Sun City Girls’ Alan Bishop titled Happy Dead Man. Recorded over the space of just two days in Arizona at the start of the year, it’s a noirish onslaught of industrial and folk music.

JT Whitfield
Untitled

A blackly appropriate soundtrack for the world around us collapsing during lockdown, Untitled is Texan experimental artist JT Whitfield’s first release for the L.I.E.S. imprint. A mini-album of six pieces of ominously slow and mightily destructive industrial electronic music, it’s a physically draining experience.

Max Richter
Waltz With Bashir

Deutsche Grammophon re-issues Max Richter’s critically adored soundtrack to Waltz With Bashir, the 2008 Israeli-animated war documentary drama directed by Ari Folman. Winning Richter the 2008 European Film Award for Best Composer, the tension and scope of his score undeniably helped sear the images of war trauma into audience’s minds.

Robb Johnson & The Irregulars
Pandemic Songs

Robb Johnson’s established skills at imagining lives from eras gone by makes him immensely suited to soundtracking this year’s COVID outbreak and lockdown. That’s exactly what he’s done with Pandemic Songs, recorded with a slimmed-down line-up of his backing band The Irregulars and detailing the days before and immediate aftermath of lockdown.

Skullcrusher
Skullcrusher

Secretly Canadian presents the debut EP from songwriter Helen Ballentine, a self-titled effort under the name Skullcrusher. The four tracks that make up Skullcrusher are preoccupied with coming to terms with the fear of going it alone and doing things yourself, which Ballentine discovered after giving up her job to conduct her music career full time and whose themes are similar to our lockdown lives.
