Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
Just Coolin'

A real treat for Jazz fans here. Just Coolin’ by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers is an unreleased album, recorded in 1959. The Jazz Messengers line-up here featured Lee Morgan on Trumpet, Bobby Timmons on Piano, Jymie Merritt on bass and Hank Mobley on Tenor Sax who took over, albeit briefly, from Bobby Golson, before Wayne Shorter joined the band.

Autotelia
I

Autotelia are the duo of Tomaga’s Tom Relleen and The Oscillation’s Demian Castellanos who here collaborate on an album if drifting psychedelia that at its calmest moments recalls Cluster but more often works in the shadow of Spacemen 3’s cosmic jamming. The pair use simply constructed meditative pieces to produced blissed out kosmische with the intention of providing an escapism soundtrack for the listener.

Bright Eyes
Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was

Conor Oberst has been busy with bits and bats over the last decade but what we all really wanted was him to bring back his band Bright Eyes. Following a Christmas party in 2017 Oberst got all emotional, decided the time was right and so Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was was made with founding members Mike Mogis and Nathaniel Walcott. The result is a sprawling record, anxious about the times but also hopeful for the future.

Germs
M.I.A. (The Complete Anthology)

A first-ever release on vinyl for M.I.A. (The Complete Anthology), a full career retrospective of influential punk act Germs. Originally released in 1993 on CD only, Porterhouse Records replicates the compilation in its entirety, right down to the original liner notes, making for a fitting tribute to this influential first-wave punk outfit.

Goat
World Music

The debut record by insane Swedish rockers Goat, highly recommended for everybody who loves squealing guitars, screaming ladies, and catchy afrobeat grooves. Combining psychedelic rock with lots of ethnic rhythms, World Music scored highly in many of 2012’s end-of-the-year lists. Great volumes of tribal distortion on this one.

IDLES
Ultra Mono

Following their breakout into wider mainstream consciousness with 'Joy As An Act Of Resistance' back in 2018, beloved Bristolian post-punk outfit IDLES reveal their third studio album. Entitled 'Ultra Mono', this record finds the band bringing in hip-hop production aesthetics by working with Kenny Beats. But staunch punk heads need not fret - this is as scathing and vitriolic in its politics as the band’s previous work.

L.A. Witch
Play With Fire

In stark contrast to their enigmatic self-titled debut album, L.A. Witch’s third effort Play With Fire is a lot more immediate and forceful, right from the opening garage-rock salvo of ‘Fire Starter’. That chimes with the themes that Sade Sanchez and Irita Pai want to get across here - sticking to your beliefs, no matter how hard it is to do in practice.

Pixies
Bossanova

'Bossanova' is the third proper full length album from indie outfit Pixies, the legendary band from Boston who made some great records back when I was a lad. To try and follow up the triple whammy of 'Come On Pilgrim', 'Surfer Rosa' and 'Doolittle' is quite a daunting and challenging task, but they managed to shape a great record which stands out with its sci-fi themes and surf rock guitars. Features 'Dig For Fire', 'Allison' and 'Velouria'.

Thelonious Monk
Palo Alto

Impulse! presents Palo Alto, a previously unreleased live recording by legendary jazz pianist Thelonious Monk, from a concert in October 1968 that came about in curious circumstances. Organised by a student at the Californian college town’s high school named Danny Scher and hosted in the school’s parking lot, it features Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums.

Ulver
Flowers of Evil

Released on an array of different-coloured vinyls, Flowers Of Evil is the 12th studio album by Norwegian experimental electronica outfit Ulver. It follows the Impala Award-winning The Assassination of Julius Caesar from 2017, and strips back the detail of their “doom dance” aesthetic to make room for ever greater sonic detail, partly thanks to the legendary Martin ‘Youth’ Glover on production.

Video Age
Pleasure Line

Perhaps indicated by its availability on a more limited ‘purple royalty’ coloured vinyl, Video Age have been mining their classic Eighties pop influences even more thoroughly than ever before on third studio album Pleasure Line. Perhaps motivated by Ross Farbe and Ray Micarelli’s upcoming weddings, bright, optimistic pop melodies shine hard here.

Wladyslaw Trejo
Es Una Bestia

After a successful mail-order endeavour, the industrious Polytechnic Youth label get their regular output up and running again following the lockdown with a real beauty. Es Una Bestia is the first solo material in five years from Slovenska Televiza member Wladyslaw Trejo, a mini-album of striking synth-punk.

Yello
Point

A yelled hello. Seriously that's how Yello have in the past explained their name. The long running Swiss group have been furrowing their own particular brand of torch song electronics for several decades now but are still going strong in 2020. Point is the follow up to 2016's Toy and it is a further example of how they can blend dada, soundtracks and neon lit electronica into their own unique shapes.
