Leisure Connection
March Of The Imbecile / Love From The Astroplane

You remember that ace 'Jungle Dancing' party guaranteed record from Leisure Connection on No 'Label' right? 'March Of The Imbecile / Love From The Astroplane' sees the duo of Aaron Coyes (Peaking Lights, Image Club, Face Plant) and Nate Archer return with a couple of trippy tunes, recorded in Los Angeles and presented via the R=A label. They used to make tracks as Rahdunes, and have brought some of that zoned, freaky psychedelic flavour to these cuts.

Primitive World
The Revolt Of Aphrodite

Inspired by the science fiction books of Laurence Durrell is Sam Wills aka Primitive World who creates a mazy marathon of sound with lots of different aspects. Dalglish
Niaiw Ot Vile

Niaiw Ot Vile is a stark and uncompromising work from Daglish. The sounds, although electronic and usually massively processed, feel immediate and organic. The record is fractured and complex, full of insectile chatters, broken drones, and monochrome arrangements. There's a wonderful progression to this record, slowly morphing from skeletal, glitchy malfunctioning into a hushed bed of swirling white noise. Our Ant put it best when he wrote (down below) '‘Niaiw Ot Vile’ is techno; blues channeled through circuits.'

Delroy Edwards
Slap Happy

Fresh from his collaboration with Dean Blunt, Delroy Edwards returns to L.I.E.S with an LP that should scratch any itch you have for some old school Chicago House. All the elements are here for some worshipping of the classic old school sound with no modern day production styles and plenty of synth stabs and latin style percussion. Unapologetically vintage, this could be his best solo offering yet.

Tobias.
1972

Not the famous never-nude of Arrested Development fame but a different Tobias. This is Tobias Freund  - a German techno expert who here opens up his archives to the general public and presents four slabs of vintage techno. He's been honing this stuff for 30 years so I'd dare say he's pretty good at it. Steady thumps, a krautrock like love of repetition and grainy night time listening are the order of the day.

Otis Houston Jr.
America

Otis Houston Jr is a kind of Wesley Willis/Moondog like character that hangs around a particular spot in New York where he performs impromptu performances of music and poetry and displays his art usually made from things he has collected from the street. His life has been full of incident and here he regales all kinds of stories of incarceration and getting shot over a kind of DIY R&B production. An utterly fantastic document of outsider art.

Written entirely on a Synclavier synth in a basement of Tel-Aviv University in 1985, keyboard player Raviv Gazit was very much ahead of the curve with the Ze album, full of icy and cinematic electronica originally composed with the theatre in mind. It now gets an overdue re-issue on vinyl via Fortuna Records.

Toots & The Maytals
Reggae Got Soul

Reggae Got Soul was the tenth album by Jamaican ska legends Toots and the Maytals. It was originally released in 1976. Whilst the album doesn’t contain any of their more well-known hits, it’s still highly a regarded part of their discography. It was mostly produced by the legendary folk producer Joe Boyd (Nick Drake, Sandy Denny etc) with Island records boss Chris Blackwell producing the title track.

Embrace
If You've Never Been

Desperately looking for the next Oasis, the industry happened upon the Huddersfield brothers McNamara and snapped up Embrace for mega-bucks in the late Nineties. Their first three albums now get the vinyl re-issue treatment, including 2001’s tender and underrated If You’ve Never Been. While it delivered two UK Top Forty hits in ‘Wonder’ and ‘Make It Last’, it flopped commercially and spelled the end of the band… for a while...

Calvin Johnson
What Was Me

Calvin Johnson is very cool. Not only does he run the seminal K Records but he had a wonderful career in Beat Happening, Halo Benders and Dub Narcotic Sound System. What Was Me was Johnson’s debut solo album, originally released in 2002. It looks like this will lead to a slew of archival releases from the K Records man.

Herbie Hancock
The Prisoner

Recorded in 1969, The Prisoner was the last album that Herbie Hancock recorded for the Blue Note label. The album is a social statement on racial oppression. Flautist, Hubert Laws, Johnny Coles on flugelhorn and trombone player Garnett Brown are among the group of stellar musicians joining Hancock on this album.

Sleaford Mods
Key Markets

Just as the UK went back to the ballot box in 2015, our favourite agit-prop duo returned with 'proper' album number three. Named after a particularly gruesome sounding supermarket in Grantham in the '70s and '80s, the album contains further ruminations on the disorientation of modern existence and the pointlessness of politics. "It's a classic," they said. We won't argue.

The Vaselines
Dum-Dum

Dum Dum was the first album by legendary Scottish indie pop  band, The Vaselines. They were led by Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee. It was originally released in 1989.  It was albums such as this that piqued the interest of Kurt Cobain who went on to cover several of their later songs with Nirvana.

Flat Worms
Antarctica

Flat Worms return with their third album in around four years, and on Antarctica, the group’s already punishing sound continues to get harsher and more brutal. Recorded in just six days with the help of Ty Segall and Steve Albini, it seeks to provide bleak yet darkly humorous commentary upon the state of the world today.

Buck Meek
Buck Meek

Big Thief’s co-founder and lead guitarist Buck Meek quietly released a solo album in the early summer of 2018. Now, the self-titled effort receives a re-issue as a result of the Brooklyn quartet’s success this year, and shares the same kind of emotional tension and openness to Big Thief’s music.

rRoxymore
Face To Phase

After emerging from her “annual creative hibernation practice”, rRoxymore returns with 'Face To Phase' - a rumbling beast born to thrive in the club, but often sounding like it derives from another dimension. A deep listen debut album, moulded and fuelled by the spirit of club music cultures.

Dan Lyons
SubSuburbia

Having released a steady stream of singles and one EP since he turned solo a couple of years back, former Fat White Family member Dan Lyons presents his debut full-length effort. SubSuburbia presents a “semi-fictionalised” version of modern, divided and unequal Britain, inspired by retro indie and replete with spoken-word interludes.

Caspian
On Circles

Massachusetts-based alt-rockers Caspian capitalise on their highly acclaimed fourth record with 'On Circles' - an epic journey across various textures and artful songwriting. The heady stew of post-rock, metal, shoegaze, electronics, noise and ambient would be a messy mix from perhaps less experienced heads. But with Caspian in the driving seat it's enthralling.

Honey Cutt
Coasting

Honey Cutt is one of those groups that is half-solo project and half-band. The leader here is Kaley Honeycutt, a singer-songwriter in the Snail Mail mould who is backed up by bassist Ari Blut and drummer Chris Chew. Together they make twee-punk ditties whose ramshackle nature sometimes belies hefty subject matter – everything from toxic masculinity to grinding poverty.

Nashville-born and Tennnessee-based singer-songwriter release 'Walking Proof' - a follow up to the 2017 success, 'Trinity Lane'. With help on production from the dextrous Lincoln Parish (Cage The Elephant), this is an assured and moreish offering.

Niklas Paschburg
Svalbard

German composer Niklas Paschburg took himself off to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard to write his second album of the same name. The album has a mournful tone which is down to the location. The effects of climate change are on his mind and are visible in the changing landscape there. He composed on piano, accordion and electric harmonium. The songs were finished with the help of Andy Barlow from Lamb in Brighton.

Carly Paradis
Nothing is Something

Carly Paradis is a world-renowned composer. Nothing is Something is her third album. It is an epic, powerful ride with strings that soar and lyrics languishing on subjects that need urgent attention such as the climate crisis. Her other work has seen her compose the score for dramatic BBC show Line of Duty and collaborate with Clint Mansell.

False Heads
It's All There But You're Dreaming

London post-punk three-piece False Heads got together in 2015 and spent four years honing their craft, writing and recording songs. Their best 12 tracks, so far that is, are present here on their debut album It’s All There But You’re Dreaming. Five of the tracks you may have heard on the EPs Gutter Press and Fall Around, but they’ve been given a bit of a makeover for the album. Rifftastic and earwormy.

Best Coast
Always Tomorrow

A decade after they first emerged with their fuzzy, charmingly retro guitar-pop, Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno present their fourth Best Coast album, and first in nearly five years. Produced by Carlos de la Garza and Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Always Tomorrow sees them faithfully exploring classic rock and pop influences once again.

Alessandro Pizzin
Received: Selected Works 1981-1993

Alessandro Pizzin started out in the late ‘70s as one half of Italian experimental duo, Ruins. Here we have Received: Selected Works 1981-1993, a collection of his solo work. He started by taking inspiration from the Fluxus art movement and Japanese ambient pioneer Hiroshi Yoshimura as he developed his own deep, rich collection of sounds. Compiled by Incidental Music with Pizzin’s input.

Elvin Jones
Mr. Jones

If you don't know Elvin Jones then if I mentioned he was the drummer in John Coltrane's Classic Quartet then that might give you an indication of the regard he is held in in jazz quarters. Here he puts together a large band including three (count 'em) sax players on his penultimate album for Blue Note. It's a varied work touching on jazz, latin and post bop and a mixture of original tunes and interpretations.

L.A. Takedown
Our Feeling Of Natural High

If you’re a fan of emotive synth-driven ‘80s film soundtracks then look no further. We have Our Feeling of Natural High, the new album from L.A. Takedown. The band, named after Michael Mann’s TV heist movie that would later become the classic, Heat, make music that would be perfect soundtracking scenes from all your favourite L.A.-based ‘80s films. Lauv
How I'm Feeling

So Lauv (Latvian for 'lion' apparently) has proved pretty popular as a producer and songwriter for hire. To date he has mainly worked behind the scenes on the work of other artists but How I'm Feeling is his first full length as a solo artist. The little men on the sleeve all form a facet of Lauv's personality on an album with a credit listing so complex that you'll get a headache.

Skymark
Primeiras Impressoes

Skymark is Italian producer, composer and general music obsessive Marc Friedli. He also co-runs Modern Sun Records. He has made music that has skipped through numerous genres - disco, fusion, house, latin, funk, soul - to name but a few. Here, on Mule Musiq, we have a reissue of his jazz album Primeiras Impressões.

Vinnie Paz
As Above So Below

Vinnie Paz is a Sicilian born rapper once known as Ikon the Verbal Hologram and about a thousand other aliases. Now trading under a more easy speak moniker he is onto his fifth album of gritty, politically aware rap. As Above So Below follows on from 2018s The Bridge and the Abyss and contains 18 collaboration-heavy tracks.

Millionaire
APPLZ ≠ APPLZ

Like a lot of electronica artists Timmy Vanhamel has worked under a multitude of aliases but Millionaire is his first love. He reconstituted the brand in 2017 for a series of sold out shows and now presents his second full length album which he claims is pronounced Apples Not apples. Like a lot of us Tim has been influenced/appalled by the recent political landscape but wants the music to exist on its own terms so you can dance to it and escape the daily sludge.

OXZ
Along Ago: 1981-1989

Dealing in dark and gothic post-punk that was ahead of its time back in the early Eighties, OXZ - an all-female trio in Japan’s underground scene at a time when few women were visible in the entertainment industry - enjoyed a sporadic yet influential career. Along Ago: 1981-1989 collects their entire discography of three EPs and one single on a 12-track vinyl, with seven extra unreleased demos available as downloads.

Fassine
Forge

For their third studio album, London electronica outfit Fassine look at figures who live stoically at the fringes and extremes of modern British society, as well as marginalised communities. Forge is also instrumentally both heavier and more forceful than when the trio last released a full-length three years ago.

Ratgrave
Rock

Rock  - great title but it isn't just rock music that duo of Max Graef and Julius Conrad are interested in. Here as Ratgrave they take influence from funk, soul, jazz rock and electronica to make an album that may well be genre splicing but still owes a debt to Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath. On the Black Focus label founded by Kamaal Williams.

Erik Nervous and the Beta Blockers
Erik Nervous and the Beta Blockers

Erik Nervous follows his 2018 album, Assorted Anxieties, by teaming up with a backing band, The Beta Blockers, and importing influences from The Minutemen, Bogshed and Andy Gill of Gang Of Four. There is also an underlying influence hardcore punk running through Erik Nervous and the Beta Blockers with some Saints and Pere Ubu thrown in for good measure.

Etapp Kyle
Nolove

Etapp Kyle is from out Western Ukraine way and this four track EP is inspired by the history, culture and politics of the area. it has resulted in carefully produced leftfield dancefloor with a distinctly minimalist approach that Kyle hopes reflects the area he grew up in. He's also made a fascinating sounding film and exhibition on the subject but this EP concentrates on the sounds and reflections.
