Brooklyn’s Antibalas mix afrobeat, funk and jazz, taking their inspiration from Fela Kuti and Harlem River Drive Orchestra. Lyrically they concentrate on political and social issues. Their 20 year career has seen them release 6 albums, with Fu Chronicles being their 7th. It is their 5th album for Daptone. Their name, if you were wondering, means Bulletproof in Spanish.

Benoit B
Notes of Love

Having released music through a number of labels such as Berceuse Heroique, Wisdom Teeth, Versatile, Permalnk, Banlieue and Peur Bleue Records, Berlin-based Benoit B has chosen Into The Light for his latest EP, Notes Of Love. His ethereal and redolent style with electronic music has been praised far and wide. Despite this, the new EP is eclectic, recalling artists as diverse as Vangelis and Art of Noise in places. Brion Starr
Rope Memories

Rope Memories is the second album by NYC musician Brion Starr. Not only is it the follow-up to Global Identity, but it is it’s sister album, too. Musically it sits where the Glam of Roxy Music mixes with a slight punk edge. It was recorded in the Kinks’ Konk studio and features musical help from Robbie Wood of Swim Deep and Lida Fox fame and Matthew McAuley from New York’s ARE Weapons.

Byron The Aquarius
Astral Traveling

Featuring the glugging synth bass-driven 'Sorry Kari (Lu$t)' and the standout moment in cocktail bar-electro Universal Love (feat. Canter
Returning To The Same Place

On Returning To The Same Place, Canter employ all those musical genres and production techniques synonymous with alternative music in the early ‘80s - synth pop, electronic rock, dark wave and post-punk. They even throw in a bit of Krautrock for good measure. If you didn’t know better, you’d assume this was recorded sometime between 1979 and 1983.

Christopher Young
Pet Sematary (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Pet Sematary is a 2019 horror film based on Stephen King's 1983 book and who better to get to compose a suitably terrifying soundtrack than Christopher Young (A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge etc). He uses synths to create a particular kind of dread that suggests something really terrible is going to happen. Kinda like I felt before playing the new Elbow album. Comes on pink haze vinyl with liner notes and printed insert.

Coil
Backwards

Hello everyone and welcome, to the ever-so-slightly weird and very wonderful world of Coil. Every bit as wonderful as the rest of the mighty Coil canon, 'Backwards' is a little extra special arriving in 2015 as an extra-beautified end product; from a project with its origins way back in 1992! Beautiful and ghoulish in equal measure, in true Coil style, it's kinda heartwarming to see the power within these grooves, undiminished some 23 years later. On Cold Spring records.

Cold Beat
Mother

San Franciscan alternative outfit Cold Beat deliver their debut for James Murphy’s prestigious DFA label with their fifth studio album Mother. Aptly titled, as lead singer Hannah Lew (ex-Grass Widow) was pregnant during its creation, she and Kyle King have never sounded as united in common cause as they are here, thematically concerned with sustainability and survival.

Coldplay
Orphans / Arabesque

With the imminent arrival of Everyday Life, Coldplay’s first album in four years, we have a two track 7” single to whet your whistles. It features two new songs - their first new songs in two years - Orphans and Arabesque. The fans are already referring to these songs masterpieces, apparently.

Eze-Nri Royal Drummers
Eze-Nri Royal Drummers Vol. 1

Eze-Nri Royal Drummers were a percussive group from the Nigeria region of West Africa who play a traditional form of African music featuring several forms of drums and percussion. This is seen as a particularly culturally significant release as the music remains unchanged from the music that was made in the region thousands of years ago.

Fat Tony and Taydex
Wake Up

Fat Tony is often to be found in the studio with A$AP Rocky and Das Racist. On Wake Up, he is paired with his good pal and producer, Taydex. Fat Tony’s raps are near the knuckle and detail his lifetime of experiences. This is the Nigerian-American rappers fifth album, but first album for Carpark.

Fotocrime
South Of Heaven

South of Heaven is the second full-length album from Fotocrime, the darkwave project by Ryan Patterson, formerly of hardcore punk act Coliseum. Produced by Jawbox’s J. Robbins and engineered by none other than Steve Albini, it’s a brooding and more immersive follow-up to the 2018 debut Principle of Pain.

Gentle Stranger
Love and Unlearn

Consisting of a rotating line-up that’s also elastic in number, Gentle Stranger present their debut album Love and Unlearn. Recorded almost entirely live in the studio over the space of just a week, and the music sounds raw and spontaneous despite the careful planning and attention to detail from the band.

God Damn
God Damn

Interesting backstory alert. God Damn leader Thomas Edward got fired from his day job as a teacher for destroying bibles. Perhaps not the wisest thing to do in today's snooping society. Some of the themes of religion he was obviously struggling with find their way into the album which sees their powerful rock supercharged by being recorded in disused tube stations.

Grotbags
Grotbags

Wacky Manchester band Grotbags, named after Rod Hull’s nemesis in the Children’s ITV show Emu’s Pink Windmill Show, have found themselves being the first band on stage at many a gig. Now their brand of lovable indie-punk-pop gets the headline slot with their self-titled debut album. They say that their music is ‘pop hits for dumb shits’ so we'll go with that.

Joe Hisaishi
Dream Songs: The Essential Joe Hisaishi

Joe Hisaishi is the Japanese composer best known for his Studio Ghibli productions. If you are at all daunted by the 100 plus scores he has produced in his lifetime then this two CD collection of his essential work could be a good place to start. His work dates back to 1981 and stylistically includes minimalist, experimental electronic, classical and piano compositions.

Kahn
Dread (Dubkasm Versions)

The extremely long shelf-life of Kahn’s 2012 cult hit ‘Dread’ continues into a whole new decade, with the much-celebrated ‘Dubkasm Versions’ getting their official release on limited edition white label. The original cut was a restrained, purists’ take on dubstep at a time when the genre was being pulled in different directions, and these versions breathe yet more life into them.

Kaja Draksler & Terrie Ex
The Swim

Terrie Ex AKA Terrie Hessels from Dutch anarcho punks The Ex and Slovenian composer and pianist Kaja Draksler are no strangers to improvisation. Their musical backgrounds are very different, but that’s what makes The Swim so good. A live improvisation between the apparent musical opposites was recorded at Cafe Oto in London and sees conventional guitar and piano mixed with toys and tools.

Kevin Krauter
Full Hand

The second album from the Indiana singer-songwriter Kevin Krauter sees the artist explore his childhood and religious upbringing to discover what makes him tick in adulthood. A navel-gazing project for sure but one which has spiritual and poetic results particularly in Krauter's soaring falsetto. A record to languish in and one to soothe both artist and listener.

Kinematik
Murur al-Kiram

The latest studio album from Kinematik, Murur al-Kiram sees the group operating with a completely different methodology to their last outing Ala’. The band’s four main musicians now no longer restrict themselves to one primary instrument, injecting their charming melodies and tricksy rhythmical interplay with a sense of spontaneity and freedom.

King Krule
Man Alive!

Archy Marshall has already proved himself as a unique British voice with previous albums 6 Feet Beneath the Moon and The Ooz under his King Krule moniker and here the baby-faced crooner returns with his third album. Once again it is a sonically fascinating work full of scope and ambition and with his trademark yelp belting out corrosive words.

Liquid Canoe
Liquid Canoe

Wolfgang Matthes leads the loose spacey, acidic bass, slow funk collective known as Liquid Canoe. Their eponymous album takes its cues from German electronic music and space rock of the 1970s. I don’t really want to write the cliche but I feel it’s necessary - this might be one to turn on, tune in and drop out to.

Lolina (Inga Copeland)
Who Is Experimental Music?

Who Is Experimental Music? What a great question, asked with experimental grammar. Lolina is Russian experimental musician Inga Copeland who also makes up one half of art duo Hype Williams with Dean Blunt. It would seem that Lolina knows the answer to her question and that answer is Lolina. Not on label, comes with labels handwritten in fluorescent marker.

Judging by the distorted facial image on the front cover of his sophomore solo album, Matt Jencik should probably have titled the record ‘Nightmare Character’. Michael Rault
I'll Be There / Sleep With Me

Michael Rault’s recent LP 'It’s A New Day Tonight' (confusing title, that) was a set of ornate, bespoke pop that leaned hard into late-period Beatles. Two of the album’s standout cuts - the punchy ‘I’ll Be There’ (closest Beatles track: ‘Here Comes The Sun’) and the more psychedelic ‘Sleep With Me (closest Beatles track: ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’) - now get treated to a limited 7” release. ‘I’ll Be There’/‘Sleep With Me’ is out via Daptone’s more rockist Wick imprint, which makes sense.

Minos
Sorry I'm Late

Sorry I’m Late is the first EP on Don’t Be Afraid by Minos. The Irish producer has disparate influences including Jeff Mills, Slayer, Downwards and Drexciya. Over the six tracks expect a mix of IDM, Techno and metal. There’s also a remix of Brown Sauce by legendary Detroit producer and DJ Claude Young Jr.

Mura Masa
R.Y.C.

Neo-pop chart-botherer Mura Masa drops his second LP ‘R.Y.C.’ - stands for ‘Raw Youth Collage’, which is definitely a thing you can say with a straight face. The first single for this LP is called ‘No Hope Generation’, a track in which Mura Masa sings about having no hope while smashing together Jamie T’s Poundland Billy Bragg thing with pop-punk and drum ‘n’ bass. Slowthai, Clairo and Georgia are among the guests. Fine.

Organized Pleasure / Satin Wall
Tropical Stumble / Dans les profondeurs

The grey, depressing landscape of the early ‘80s. We know what it was like in the UK and the US, and it seems there was little difference in Belgium. What else was there to do for the youth other than start a band? Both Organized Pleasure and Satin Wall were formed by disaffected youths. In 1981, following a few gigs, they got their chance to record. Tropical Stumble and Dans les profondeurs were recorded in 1981 and are a document of two bands keeping punk alive that bit longer.

Paul Haslinger
Exit Ghost

As a former member of legendary electronic music outfit Tangerine Dream and an experienced composer of soundtrack work, Paul Haslinger strikes out by himself on this much-anticipated album that’s taken him eight years to write, record and finesse. Built primarily around Haslinger’s grand piano, Exit Ghost sees this teller of other people’s stories examine his own life and experiences.

Coming From Reality

The story of American singer-songwriter Rodriguez has been much covered over the years particularly in the Searching for the Sugarman film. It again pitches Rodriquez with Dennis Coffey and features further stream of consciousness type songs that reference Bob Dylan but has a sound all of its own.

Rachel Aggs has had a good 2019, releasing brilliant albums with Trash Kit and Sacred Paws. She now returns to Shopping for their fourth album, All or Nothing. As the band are now split between LA and Glasgow it meant they had to find time when they could get together. The album came out of an intensive two week writing and recording sesh. Expect their usual bold, post-punk sound, but this time with added pop sensibilities.

Sidiku Buari
Revolution (Live Disco Show In New York City)

Revolution (Live Disco Show In New York City) by Sidiku Buari displays different aspects of the artist. Side one is supposedly, although not definitely, recorded live at a show in NYC that may or may not have happened. Their disco sound is anchored by heavy bass. Side 2 shows the versatility of the band with a couple of politically charged numbers, a Christmas song and some afrobeat grooves.

Suburban Knight
Nocturbulous Behaviour

Another classic Underground Resistance platter re-issued on 12" vinyl. Three tracks of superb warehouse-friendly techno catapulted along by squishy acidy basslines, a thumping kick and heaps of atmosphere. The Groundhogs
Thank Christ For The Bomb

The Groundhogs formed as a blues band in the early 60s. By 1970 when their third album, 'Thank Christ For The Bomb', was recorded, they were morphing into a heavier prog rock band. It has been cited as proto-punk, proto-grunge and as "a masterpiece’ by the NME. The album has a diverse set of famous fans from the Damned’s Captain Sensible, Underworld’s Karl Hyde and former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus whose solo work takes a trick or two from here.

The Terminals
Uncoffined

The Terminals are arguably one of the finest examples of the New Zealand indie underground: they did contain members of a whole host of other Flying Nun bands after all. Uncoffined is their debut album, from 1988, and it is at once dark-edged and beautifully tuneful. It's had a remaster, and is now reissued by the HoZac Archival label.

Those Damn Crows
Point Of No Return

Sophomore studio album from South Wales-based rock quintet Those Damn Crows, following up the word-of-mouth cult success of their debut album Murder and the Motive a couple of years back. Produced by rock veterans Andy Sneap and Colin Richardson, Point of No Return emphasises soul over riffing and the more conventional demands of rock.

The creator and illustrator of which have contributed the artwork to this project. What we have here is not jazz, however. Its five slices of catchy synth pop.

Tom Holkenborg
Terminator: Dark Fate (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Tom Holkenborg composed the score to Terminator: Dark Fate. You may know the Dutch composer from his soundtrack to Mad Max: Fury Road or his work under the alias Junkie XL. Holkenborg has an uncanny knack of scoring action, so he’s the ideal man for this. He also manages to doff his cap to Brad Fiedel who scored the first two Terminator movies.
