Jack Peñate
After You

After two albums and initial massive popularity - you could by his CDs in supermarkets - singer / songwriter Jack Peñate stopped. He didn’t take himself off to the Swiss mountains and record feedback into a four-track, he just stopped making music altogether. Fast-forward ten years and he’s back with his long-awaited third album, After You, released via XL Recordings.

Jack Rose
Dr. Ragtime & His Pals

It always seems somehow altogether wrong that Jack Rose is dead. The former Pelt guitarist was just getting into his stride with his form of guitar fingerpicking and inventive ragas. At least his work is being preserved for posterity though and here is a re-issue of his 2008 album which saw him move away from his solo excursions towards group playing and collaboration.

Jack Ruby
Jack Ruby - Volume 2

Jack Ruby were one of the missing links between Fun House era Stooges and the eventual No Wave of the late 70s. They basically sound like what would happen if J.G Ballard started a proto-punk band; electronic noise throughout with dirty rock n' roll. This is the 2nd volume of LP reissues which is the more noisy and experimental side of the band, and it features an appearance by free jazz sax player Pete van Riper and some electric viola reminiscent of some of the Velvet Underground's most dissident work. Limited edition of just 600 copies, it also includes a download card.

Jack White
Lazaretto

The main thing to note about Jack White's second solo album Lazaretto is that it plays from the inside out. Yup stick your needle in the middle and watch it head towards the outer groove. While you are at it you'll have to listen to Jack's increasingly bloated hair-rock  - sort of the exact opposite thing to what he was doing in the White Stripes. But that vinyl huh? Amazing.

Jack White
Lazaretto / Power Of My Love

'Lazaretto' is the first single from Jack White's second album, cunningly also called 'Lazaretto', being released on his very own Third Man Records. Why Jack White is writing songs about maritime quarantine stations, only he knows. The track is backed on the flip by exclusive tune 'Power Of My Love'.

Jack White
Connected By Love / Respect Commander

Jack White continues ploughing his solo furrow with a new single on his Nashville-based Third Man label. It’s a double A-sided affair containing the tracks Connected By Love and Respect Commander. A new album will follow at some point in the not too distant future and Jack White has already alerted us to the fact that it’s ‘bizarre’. 7” single on Third Man.

Jackie Shane
Any Other Way

A pioneering figure who is thoroughly deserving of the retrospective interest in her career, Any Other Way is the first collection of Jackie Shane’s work approved by the artist herself. Though at the time her work barely got beyond the clubs of Toronto, Shane’s strong voice and stronger presence as a transgender woman in 1960’s North America has seen her influence spread far over the years. This LP brings together live recordings and her run of 45s, all of which demonstrate her unique command of soul, funk and r&b. Includes three previously unreleased tracks.

Jacky Giordano
Organ

Jacky Giordino was a session musician making library music. He also made music under the names Jacky Nodaro and Jacky Sherylee. He loved the organ so he thought he’d make a jazz / funk / soul album in tribute adding a bit of bass synth to the mix. Organ was released in 1977 and it could well have soundtracked a gritty cop B-movie of the time.

Jacky Giordano
Organ Plus

Enigmatic library music making session muso and apparent recidivist Jacky Giordino AKA Jacky Nodaro AKA Jacky Sherylee released his jazz / funk organ tribute album, Organ, in 1977. Organ Plus followed in 1978, this time he took a more laid back approach giving the album a smooth jazz / easy listening sheen.

Jaco
You Know

Spotlight-shy rock drummer, Jake Waltzman, plied his trade in a number of Magic City - that’s Birmingham, Alabama - bands such as Vulture Whale, Ham Bagby and The Wes McDonald Plan. He’s now rebranded himself as Jaco and become less shy, getting front and centre to blast out some indie rock and power pop grooves on his new album, You Know.

Jagwar Ma
Every Now & Then

Catchy vocal hooks, groovy electronic pop and all with a big hats off nod to 90s dance culture. Jagwar Ma bring heady euphoric acid bass lines, warehouse club chords stabs and vocal loops and vibrant and drug-laced energy of Madchester. Deserves long exposure trippy music videos with vibrant cartoons, melon twisting.

Jäh Division
Dub Will Tear Us Apart... Again (Deluxe Edition)

Jah Division! Just as the name would lead you to expect, this project is a dub take on the works of Joy Division. Pretty funny. But wait! At the controls is a bunch of Brooklyn experimental miscreants, including members of the great Oneida! Dub Will Tear Us Apart… Again (Deluxe Edition) reissues this 2004 12” with five additional tracks. Silly, but also actually extremely good. Reissued by Ernest Jenning Record Co.

Jake Bugg
Jake Bugg

Jake Bugg is the debut album by Nottingham singer-songwriter Jake Bugg. He co-wrote most of it with former Snow Patrol sidesman Iain Archer though Crispin Hunt of the Longpigs helped out on one track. It was the first flushing of his signature style which took his Alex Turner style northern scamp-like delivery into full on skiffle mode and spawned iconic tracks such as Trouble Town and Lightning Bolt.

Jakob Thorkild
Devotional

With his new LP Devotional the Danish composer/guitarist Jakob Thorkild brings the curtain down on half a decade of work. This album completes the Grenzgänger trilogy that began with 2014’s Art Sleaze. Here Thorkild is joined by singer Anna Mose and electric violinist Andrea Rebecca Alsted for a record of potent minimal-classical compositions. The title of the Devotional is an apt one - many of the tracks here hover at the edge of religious and spiritual music in a manner that recalls Arvo Pärt.

Jamael Dean
Black Space Tapes

Jamael Dean is only 20 yet he’s already played on Kamasi Washington’s Heaven and Earth and toured in Thundercat’s band. He is also the grandson of jazz drummer, Donald Dean. That would, one assumes, make him a pretty handy musician. Well, now you can hear his sounds up front on his debut album, Black Space Tapes. He has soaked up influences from the likes of Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane and Herbie Hancock.

Jamal Moss presents R2 Underground
The Walls

Jamal Moss, the Hieroglyphic Being himself, presents a fine cut from a live performance in Zurich on the A-side of this, the one hundredth release of the Mathematics label! Over on the B-side, we get to enjoy a ‘Paradise’ mix and an ’Ocean To Ocean’ version from Blake Ronan. The Walls is a 12” release, strictly limited in numbers.

James Brown
Get On The Good Foot

Get On The Good Foot by James Brown was originally released in 1972. As you might expect, it’s funky as hell. The title track was released as a single, split into two parts for some reason, and has been sampled numerous times. If you think you haven’t heard it before, you probably have.

James Green
Donkey Jukebox

Donkey Jukebox started life as an art installation by James Green in a Yorkshire pub. Green created pieces of music by looping phrases he played on a French lap organ and weaving them into nonrepeating linear soundscapes. Artist and musician Green is hardly prolific as a solo artist, this being only his second album in 13 years, but in that time he has also formed The Big Eyes Family Players and collaborated with Alasdair Roberts.

James McKenzie & The McKenzie Brothers
James McKenzie & The McKenzie Brothers

The moustache on the sleeve could probably tell you that what we have here is some smooth yacht rock from 40 years ago re-unleashed onto the world by Athens of the North. With comparisons to David Crosby, Steely Dan and Jimmy Webb being bandied around it sounds like we're in for some smooth sailing with this compilation of the two albums this McKenzie clan made in their lifetime. Keep the fire burning.

James McVinnie / Tom Jenkinson
All Night Chroma

Composed by Tom Jenkinson of Squarepusher fame and performed by renowned organist James McVinnie, All Night Chroma came about after a commission from No-Nation with PRSF for Music. The songs debuted as ‘The Secret Life of Organs’ in 2016 with a short live run, and the material has now been re-arranged for a studio release on Warp Records.

James Murray
Falling Backwards

James Murray follows last year's celebrated 'Killing Ghosts' with a new full-length album on Home Normal. Falling Backwards promises more of Murray's trademark hushed, creeping and haunting ambience but with an increased sense of intimacy this time. The record relates his personal childhood memories and speaks to catharsis through release. There's a definite emphasis on optimism here amongst the splintered yet linear melodies. A narrative of a naturally lit journey, made in plain sight.

James Ruskin
Point 2

Just short of two decades since its initial release, James Ruskin's 'Point 2' is reissued - re-energising the catchy loops and crispy drums that captured hearts back in the early naughties, with a couple of previously unreleased tracks thrown in to boot. It's a hard slab of pure techno, inspired by the minimal Detroit sound and influential in the UK underground.

James White and The Blacks
Sax Maniac (Redux)

James Chance, hiding in plain sight here. James White And The Blacks is basically Chance and his Contortions minus keyboard player Adele Bertei. Their fantastically-titled 1982 LP Sax Maniac is another piece of no-wave wackiness from Chance, all ESG basslines and James Brown horn licks. This Redux reissue from Futurismo contains a bonus cut which features Arto Lindsay.

James Yuill
A Change In State

James Yuill studied audio forensics at university. They’ll let you do anything nowadays won’t they? As long as you’ve got the £40k to give ‘em, ey! But look, Yuill’s a last bastion of hope, a graduate using their degree to earn some money and pay some taxes and A Change in State shows where all his student loan went. Yuill’s toured with groups such as Royksopp, M83 and Hot Chip which should give you an indication of his musical direction - building, vast electronic music which is super danceable but also like the soundtrack to some epic future.

Jamie T
Kings & Queens

Kings & Queens was the second album from Jamie T. It took the signature sound of his successful debut Panic Prevention and gave it a grittier and more paranoid air. He mixes his South London singing/rapping style with blasts of jazz, hip-hop and noise creating an album that was both poignant and thought provoking. Ten years later the bods at Virgin have kindly re-issued it for your pleasure.

Jamie T
Panic Prevention

As 2006 turned into 2007 people were coming to terms with the fact that The Libertines weren’t getting back together any time soon, The Streets would never make another album as good as Original Pirate Material again and Lily Allen was now a thing. Enter Jamie T and his debut LP Panic Prevention, an LP that saw the cheeky Londoner serving a sound that kind of amalgamated all the above and threw in a dash of Billy Bragg's earthy people’s-poet pizzaz for good measure. Hits like ‘Sheila’ and ‘If You Got The Money’ ensured that Jamie Alexander Treays would be a fixture of festival lineups for many years to come.

In Colour is the debut album by Jamie xx, from the Mercury Music Prize winning band, The xx. Over the past six years Jamie xx has worked with and re-worked the likes of Radiohead, Alicia Keys and Florence & The Machine but his crowning glory must be the reworking of Gil Scott Heron’s I’m New Here album. In Colour will please fans of his collaborative efforts and includes, Girl, Sleep Sound and Loud Places. The latter is the forthcoming single.

Jane Weaver
Modern Kosmology

Sometimes a change is as good as a rest. Jane Weaver's early records (including those by her excellent band Misty Dixon) were lovely under the radar folky affairs but it wasn't until she started to invoke in vogue kraut and psych influences on 'The Silver Globe' that some overground success came her way. Modern Kosmology threatens to continue down that cosmic path (just look at that title). Sure to be one of 2017's more anticipated releases.

Jav Is...um... is none other than Jarvis Cocker once spindly frontman of Pulp and this is the first track from his new band he has called Jarv Is. Make sense? Sorta. So this was out previously in limited numbers but with it being by Jarv Is (Cocker) there has been much demand so it has been re-pressed and now features an Unloved (David Holmes and pals) remix over on the flip.

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit
Live at Twist & Shout 11.16.07

Record Store Day 2018 brings us a first-ever vinyl edition of Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit’s Live at Twist & Shout 11.16.07. This mini-LP originally came out in 2008, a time when Isbell had just split from the Drive-By Truckers and everyone was curious to see what his solo stuff would sound like. Turns out it wasn't all that different to his old band - this is melodious, stately and proud Americana.

A masterfully observed collection of southern rock fused with modern-day alternative rock, the re-mastered Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit comes also on translucent green vinyl.

The re-mastered record, done under the aegis of Pete Lyman, comes also on translucent blue vinyl.

Jason Lytle
Arthur King Presents Jason Lytle: NYLONANDJUNO

The latest album in the King Arthur presents series sees Grandaddy mainman Jason Lyttle getting experimental. NYLONANDJUNO was recorded for the LA collective by Lyttle alone using an analog synth and a nylon strung guitar. He took his inspiration for making the music from the song titles he’d already come up with.

Jason Trachtenburg
Let the Fishes Do The Asking EP

This brisk little cassette captures some of Jason Trachtenburg's finest moments as a silly and touching songwriter. These songs were recorded in 1993 and feature raw banjo playing, sweet gang vocals and that high-pitched coo of Tratchenburg's. 'Let The Fishes Do The Asking' is one for fans of anti-folk that recalls Daniel Johnston and Jeffrey Lewis, as well as those who love quick, in-and-out pop songs a la Guided By Voices.

Jay Bolotin
No One Seems To Notice That It's Raining

Jay Bolotin is one of the great ‘what-if’s of the American songbook. A singer-songwriter contemporaneous with Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, Bolotin’s work is known to be admired by artists including Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard. However, he has never had much success in getting his music released. Now this Delmore Recorings collection hopes to give Bolotin some long-overdue shine. Recorded in the first half of the 1970’s, the tracks of No One Seems To Notice That It’s Raining are spare, melancholy things. One wonders if Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy ever got wind of these.

Jay Daniel
School Dance EP

Remember your first School Dance? If it was anything like mine, it was a crazy balance between adolescent self-loathing and a hazy alcoholic swagger. That’s exactly what Jay Daniel captures in his new EP, with disorienting decorations circling distantly around sturdy beats that do not care for subtlety.

Jay Reatard / Sonic Youth
Hang Them All / No Garage

This split single by Jay Reatard and Sonic Youth was originally released back in 2009. It was a time before Jay Reatard's tragic passing and Sonic Youth were still together as a band. The 7” features 'Hang Them All' by Jay Reatard and 'No Garage' by Sonic Youth, who for the original release called themselves Sonik-Youth.

Jaylib
Champion Sound

Mad beat-drama here, combining the killer skills of Madlib and J Dilla to form Jaylib! The duo trade beat-making and rap-rhyming skills over the course of the album, which was first released in 2003. Needless to say, each excel in both practices. Champion Sound is a double LP, reissued on the Stones Throw label.

Jaz Coleman
Magna Invocatio - A Gnostic Mass for Choir and Orchestra Inspired by the Sublime Music of Killing Joke

Jaz Coleman, front man of post punk band Killing Joke has always had a thing for classical music, despite his more obvious experimental rock leanings. He has always thought that the songs of Killing Joke have an untapped widescreen gorgeousness that orchestral sounds can bring to music. Magna Invocatio - A Gnostic Mass for Choir and Orchestra Inspired by the Sublime Music of Killing Joke was recorded with St Petersburg Philharmonic. With this project Coleman has sought to accentuate the beauty and melody of Killing Joke songs.

JD McPherson
Holly, Carol, Candy & Joy / Red Bows (For A Blue Girl)

Retro rocker JD McPherson decided to take out all the detritus most musicians put in when making a Christmas record. That meant no sleigh bells and no cheesy cover versions. Instead, 2018's SOCKS was classic vintage rock and roll with a holiday theme and now you can buy a 'Snow Globe' 7" containing one of the album's highlights Holly, Carol, Candy & Joy plus an unreleased track Red Bows (For A Blue Girl).

New album from the recently engaged hip-hop artists Jean Grae and Quelle Chris. A political album about our impulse, when every conceivable thing is going wrong, to say Everything's Fine. Matthias & Maxime is a film directed by Xavier Dolan about two friends who are cast in intimate roles opposite each other in a short film. The feelings this awakens tests everything about their relationship and themselves. The soundtrack was written by French-Candian composer Jean-Michel Blais. Blais takes his inspiration from famous classical piano works (Chopin etc) along with lesser known or more leftfield composers from Steve Reich to Chilly Gonzales.

Jeff Stonehouse
Mariner's Willow

Mariner’s Willow by Jeff Stonehouse is a recording that is dedicated to his mum and imbued with her spirit. The piano and guitar work together on the recording mimic the ebb and flow of the sea which was an important part of her life. The sounds of nature heard on the album were recorded near Stonehouse’s mother’s home in the South Downs on the last day she spent there. Deep in the mix are the vocals of Alicia Merz, one of his mother’s favourite singers. Stonehouse is keen to point out that the album is intended as a celebration of his mother’s life and is not supposed to be a sad work.

Jeff Tweedy
Warm

Warm is the second solo album by Jeff Tweedy, but the first to be comprised entirely from new material. It follows on from last year’s Together At Last, which contained acoustic versions of songs from his bands Wilco, Golden Smog and Loose Fur. Here, he is ably assisted by his son, Spencer Tweedy, Wilco drummer, Glenn Kotche and Tom Schick. It was produced and recorded by Jeff Tweedy, which really makes it totally his album. Jehst
Billy Green Is Dead

This is the first new album from criminally underrated British hip-hop artist Jehst in more than 6 years. He's obviously used the time wisely concocting this ambitious sprawl of an album which follows his fictional character Billy Green through a turbulent life which leaves him at breaking point and eventually (spoiler alert) dead.

Jenny Hval
The Practice of Love

Musical witch lady Jenny Hval is back to cast her sonic hexes ‘pon us once more. Hval’s seventh LP 'The Practice Of Love' is another fine work of modern-day Gothicism from the Norwegian artist, one in which she leans a little heavier into the pop stuff than she has done previously. Julee Cruise, Visions-era Grimes and that there David Lynch are the related artists you’re grappling with on 'The Practice Of Love'.

Jenny Lewis
On The Line

Where has Jenny Lewis been for the last five years since her 2014 album 'The Voyager'? Anyway, the good news is that the former Riley Kilo singer has this new album where she is backed by a cast of quite legendary musicians including Ringo Starr, Beck and Don Was. There's always one or two good things in a Jenny Lewis LP so it may well be worth the wait.

Jesca Hoop
STONECHILD

Fifth album from Jesca Hoop who got out of her Manchester bolthole and went to Bristol to record with Sir John Parish (PyJamas Harvey etc). The result was an album in which Parish severely edited Hoop's work leaving her with a minimal and stark album that cuts to the chase of human emotion. The album always remains distinctly Hoop's mind.

Jesse Malin
Sunset Kids

The eighth studio album from American singer-songwriter Jesse Malin, whom the long of memory will recall was once heralded as a Next Big Thing in rock music in about 2002. That fame and fortune never materialised, but the quality of his output has always been high, something attested to by 'Sunset Kids', which features guest spots from Lucinda Williams and Billie Joe Armstrong.

Jessica Pratt
Jessica Pratt

Pratt by name but not by nature, Jessica Pratt makes a lovely kind of folk music that often sounds like it is covered with 1960s dust. The obvious reference points are Nico and Joni Mitchell but she has her own unique sound which is often startlingly beautiful. Try this debut album which came out on Tim Presley's (White Fence) label.

Jesu / Sun Kil Moon

This joint album from Sun Kil Moon and Jesu is the strangest and most natural of collaborations. The groups have different methods (Justin K Broadrick with abrasive post-metal and Mark Kozelek with acoustic ballads and dark wit) but on America's Most Wanted these combine alongside bleak textures and melancholy guitars. This CD album on Rough Trade and Caldo Verde Records also has an all-star cast of indie icons, from Bonnie "Prince" Billy, to Rachel Goswell of Slowdive.

JHassall
Milk EP

Norwich based producer JHassall mixes elements of no-wave, abstract noise and four-to-the-floor techno that is simultaneously atonal and danceable. Abrasive industrial scrapes are arranging percussively and clatter around each other in a playful manner making them highly listenable tracks. Jarring, but in a great way. This is the first physical music release of Chloride City.

Jherek Bischoff
Scores

Scores is an instrumental version of Jherek Bischoff’s 2012 album Composed. While that record featured a bunch of guests providing vocals, Scores takes it back to just the music, revealing these busy little pieces in their full exquisite detail! Featuring what sounds like a decent-sized string ensemble as well as intimate parts. CD release on The Leaf Label.

Jim Ghedi
Home is Where I Exist, Now to Live and Die

Solo guitarist Jim Ghedi built up the material for Home Is Where I Exist, Now To Live And Die while travelling through Northern Europe, and the restlessness and the exposure to different lives that travel brings is all audibly present here on this record. Ghedi’s traditional folk sensibility plus influences from Eastern Europe and beyond equal a captivating set of pieces. On Cambrian Records.
