19 Gadi Pirms Sākuma
19 Years Before The Beginning

Although they were in operation for three years until 1991, Latvian avant-garde electronic collective 19 gadi pirms sākuma only got their sole studio album 19 Years Before The Beginning into the public realm in 2005. Now available again on vinyl because of this re-issue on Stroom, this is a chance to re-discover an underground gem.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.
Minstrel In The Galaxy

'Minstrel In The Galaxy' by Japanese experimental psychedelic rockers Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O was originally released in 2004 on CD only. It featured a newly trimmed line up and their sound was more stripped back and darker, gradually preparing the listener for the gigantic crescendo. This is the first vinyl release of the album.

S.L.F. Versions is a four-track, 12" EP of some pretty savage and radical remixes of Aïsha Devi’s recent well-received release S.L.F.. Its component parts are given overhauls by newcomers and scene veterans alike, from Chinese artist 33EMYBW, Indonesian duo Gabber Modus Operandi, Scandinavian producer Varg and the Equiknoxx collective.

The functionally titled 1 from duo An Explore brings together two incredibly talented musicians from the British avant-garde scene - Rob Macdonald (founder of the Scratch nightclub, and part of Speeka, Jumbonics and Gum Drop) and Lucy Wilkins (touring and recording violinist). This thoughtful EP is available on both CD and 10” vinyl.

Anders P. Jensen
Urodela

Danish composer and musician Anders P. Jensen has created Urodela as an exploration of movement in life - moving from here to there - and in nature with its ever changing ways. Urodela is made in two parts. The first part, Gamut, is inspired by John Cage’s Six Melodies whilst part two, Rondo, is based on the 17th century musical form it is named after.

Andy Dragazis
Afterimages

Andy Dragazis announces his debut full-length album, released via his own label Lightwell Recordings. Afterimages shows the producer and composer, previously responsible for many great records under his previous guise Blue States, laying down some of the most serene and idiosyncratic music he’s ever made.

Antoinette Konan
Antoinette Konan

Originally released in 1986, the self-titled debut from Ivorian musician Antoinette Konan was based almost entirely around the ahoko instrument - which adorns the album’s front cover. It’s often credited with bringing new energy to the African country’s Baoulé scene, and is presented here via Awesome Tapes From Africa on vinyl and CD.

Archers of Loaf
White Trash Heroes

White Trash Heroes, the fourth and final LP from Archers Of Loaf, gets a new lease of life on Fire. This deluxe edish of the 1998 record pairs the original ten tunes with a bunch of demos, B-sides and rarities. By AoL standards White Trash Heroes is an unusual listen, full of songs that wend through indie, post-rock, post-hardcore and even a little electronica. Bloc Party, The Postal Service and Parquet Courts can all claim lineage to this album.

Ariana Grande
Yours Truly

Inspired by all the greats (Houston, Aguilera, Carey), this is the first album from former Nickelodeon child star Ariana Grande. It's a batch of smooth running '90s inspired R&B with a wide vocal range and lyrics about how you can reach up and be yourself and always follow your dreams etc. Now available on vinyl thanks to Republic Records.

Atticus Ross won an Oscar for his collaboration with Trent Reznor on The Social Network and a Grammy for their collaboration on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. This album also features two songs by Crystal Kay, who will be well known to all you K-pop fans.

Bells Of Kyoto
Bells Of Kyoto

The Mitsuko & Svetlana label exhumes an incredible jazz-funk fusion record from the Eighties. Originally released 35 years ago, and coming out again on vinyl for the first time since then, the German/Australian/British ensemble Bells of Kyoto gave an example of technically skilled but unfussily executed cool on their self-titled effort.

Ben Lee
Quarter Century Classix

Quarter Century Classics is an album of covers by Ben Lee. It came about due to him being trapped in a Chicago hotel room after heavy snowfall grounded all flights. Chicago was where Lee recorded his debut album, Grandpaw Would, so it holds a lot of memories for him - it reminded him of a time of musical discovery. The album includes cover of songs by The Breeders, Daniel Johnston and more.

Blue Hawaii
Open Reduction Internal Fixation

Naming their fourth record after the kind of surgery required when Agor badly injured his heel on tour, Open Reduction Internal Fixation sees Blue Hawaii in great form, spanning house, garage and electronica. Bandmate Ra went through her own emotional damage with the disintegration of a long-term relationship, making the new record a bold and cathartic one.

Bobby Blackbird
The Master Blenda

We very nearly didn’t get The Master Blenda, the first solo single from Equiknoxx mastermind Bobby Blackbird. Shortly after the tune's conception Blackbird was in a near-fatal car crash and spent months in hospital. He emerged more determined than ever to complete the track, one that turns away from Equiknoxx’s twisted dancehall style and heads towards a hotstepping ska sound. Turned out with a band that included several members of Raging Fyah, ‘The Master Blenda’ is a triumph in every sense of the word. Exile The Brave and Blackbird’s Equiknoxx buddy Time Cow dub it out on the B-side.

Bon Iver
22, A Million

That isolated cabin in the woods feels a long way away now: Justin Vernon’s Bon Iver seem to have made new album 22, A Million in a cabin in the internet instead. Lots of auto-tune, lo-fi crunch next to high-fi shimmer, and track titles to trump any vaporwave you could throw at it. Take your pick of CD, cassette tape or vinyl editions: there is even a deluxe LP edition with a bonus 12” of extended versions. On Jagjaguwar

Boy Harsher
Country Girl Uncut

Massachusetts-based synthwave duo Boy Harsher released the four track EP Country Girl in 2017. Now we have Country Girl Uncut - the original EP plus four previously unreleased tracks. The sound of EP reflects both their idealistic rural Massachusetts home life and their crazy, hedonistic trips to New York.

Carl Thiel
Seis Manos (Music From The Netflix Original Series)

With scores such as From Dusk ‘Til Dawn and Machete under his belt, it seems that Carl Thiel would be the natural choice for scoring the animated Netflix series Seis Manos. The series centres around the lives of three friends, once orphaned, who were trained in martial arts set in a fictional town in 1970s Mexico. The music mixes the cool sounds of ‘60 and ‘70s movies with modern action film scores, seasoned with Mexican instrumentation.

Choir of Young Believers
This Is For The White In Your Eyes

On the surface of it, This Is For The White In Your Eyes seems to indicate it will be like any amount of Scandinavian indie-pop that has occasionally wrecked the charts over the last decade. But Jannis Joya Makrigiannis and his Choir of Young Believers give everything on their debut album a sense of genuine and well-observed grandiosity.

Chris Corsano / Massimo Pupillo
Via Combusta

Those in the know will immediately identify this as a premium slice of heavy-hitting improvisation: how could it fail to be with this personnel? Massimo Pupillo plays grinding noise-bass for Zu, and Chris Corsano has played impossibly-expressive drums alongside almost every notable member of the experimental music scene. Consequently, Via Combusta kicks ass.

Christopher Lennertz
The Boys (Music From The Amazon Original Series)

Chistopher Lennertz has written scores for different media platforms from films such as Hop and Horrible bosses to the video game Medal of Honour and the Netflix series Lost In Space. Here we find him scoring Amazon Prime series The Boys, based on the graphic novel  by Garth Ennis and co-created, designed, and illustrated by Darick Robertson. Lennertz has created a sweeping and searing score to match the action on screen.

Christopher Tignor
A Light Below

The fourth LP from Christopher Tignor is another set of intricate modern chamber music. On A Light Below strings dance across one another in a manner that recalls Ravel and Shostakovich, but the use of processed electronics, percussion and triggered synths gives the album a distinctly contemporary edge. Think Owen Pallett crossed with someone like Nils Frahm or Oneohtrix Point Never.

Christopher Young
Hellbound: Hellraiser II (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

I could just list all the films that Christopher Young has scored, but I don’t have time, and I’m sure you don’t have time to read it. Fair to say he’s done a few, though, and therefore knows what he’s doing. For Hellbound: Hellriaser II he mixes choirs, electronics and a massive orchestra to create a score that multiplies the terror on screen.

COMA
Voyage Voyage

Presumably titled after Desireless's 1986 smash, this is the German COMA not to Polish rock band of the same name. They make emotional electronica and dreamy soundscapes using an array of instruments both real and computerised and add in vocals to give you the melancholic Germanic pop thrills you require. Another safe space where analogue can meet digital without a fist fight ensuing.

Cult of Luna
A Dawn to Fear

Get yourself strapped in for the big one from heavy, heavy post metallers Cult of Luna as they take you on a 79 minute rollercoaster ride through their ominous atmospheres and pummelling riffs. The fact that they only manage eight songs in this time tells you all you need to know about the crushing slo-mo churns and brooding orchestrated blasts of post-rock from these long term heavies. For the uninitiated think Neurosis, Isis or the heavier end of the post- rock spectrum.

Dead Horse One
The West Is The Best

Dead Horse One have quite the pedigree. Their first album was recorded by Mark Gardener of Ride. They then went on tour with Ride and the Brian Jonestown Massacre now Gardner has returned to help mix this, their third LP. They've also played Liverpool Psych Fest. Hopefully all this is giving you some idea of where they are coming from musically but singer Olivier Debard helps further by suggesting that this is informed by the '90s bands they loved and adds in tragic US based weepers Sparklehorse to the equation.

DeeCoy
Archives Vol. 1

DeeCoy is the alter ego of Daryl Cura, a member of Chicago electronic trio The Dirty Criminals along with Hieroglyphic Being and Traxx. 'The Archives Vol. 1' sees one of Chicago’s best-kept secrets debut on L.I.E.S. (Delroy Edwards, Beau Wanzer) with some raw Chi-town house slammers. Nice and scuzzy, though not so much that you can't parse the little synth melodies scattered throughout 'The Archives Vol. 1'.

Donna McGhee
Make It Last Forever

Donna Summer wasn’t the only disco-diva in NYC named Donna, you know. Those on the ground knew that Donna McGhee’s 1978 LP ‘Make It Last Forever’ was one of the must-have joints of the time, a set of ultra-sexy funk and disco struts that remain as smooth as crushed velvet to this day. Long a record that went for big bucks on the vinyl black market, ‘Make It Last Forever’ has now been remastered and reissued at a more affordable rate by WEWANTSOUNDS.

Emily Reo

Only You Can See It is Emily Reo's second album. It's upbeat and energetic and sounds like if pop stars used Game Boy's to make their tracks rather than Ableton. This collided with Reo's classical voice training makes for an album where anything feels possible. On top of everything the lyrics are deeply personal and poetic. On Carpark.

Ena
Baroque

Erlon Chaves
Procura-se uma Virgem

Despite dying in 1974 at the age of just 41, Erlon Chaves is still well-known in his native land for his work in TV and film scoring. Chaves brought elements of funk and samba to the world of library music, and these unusual elements set him apart from many of his contemporaries in the field. His score for 1971 soft-porn flick Procura-se uma Virgem is a perfect setting for his groovy, slightly louche brand of soundtrack work. Now reissued via Mad About Records.

Judging by their single, Influenza, False Advertising are digging that classic grunge dynamic of heavy guitar intro followed by bass-led verse. There's definitely a Nirvana influence going on here. Fela Kuti & Afrika 70

There's at least one of our customers who should be happy about all these Fela Kuti re-issues... the guy who asked me all about how he could get hold of rare Fela Kuti stuff about six months ago. Whether or not this is you then you should be excited to learn that Kuti's No Agreement is now available as a single vinyl having previously only part of the box set series. J.J.D (Johnny Just Drop!!) - Live!! At Kalakuta Republik

Previously only available on vinyl as part of the Box Set series many moons ago, Knitting Factory issues Fela Kuti’s J.J.D (Johnny Just Drop) Live at Kalakuta Republik. A ferocious collection originally released in 1977, it saw the Afrobeat icon taking aim at Nigerians who had been to Europe and America and returned to the country feeling embarrassed about their roots.

Fela Kuti & Afrika 70
V.I.P. (Vagabonds In Power)

Previously only available on vinyl as part of the Box Set series many moons ago, Knitting Factory re-issues V.I.P. (Vagabonds In Power). Originally released in 1979 and recorded at the Berlin Jazz Festival the previous autumn, it’s a portrait of Fela Kuti in transition. Not only was it recorded right between the break-up of his Africa 70 group and the formation of Egypt 80, it was the last album that Fela made with long-time drummer Tony Allen.

Fela Kuti & Egypt 80
Underground System

Previously only available on vinyl as part of the Box Set series many moons ago, Knitting Factory issues Fela Kuti’s Underground System album (also known as U.S.). Recorded with his Egypt 80 band and released in 1992, it was sadly the final album of new material in the Afrobeat legend’s lifetime.

Detroit minimal techno pioneer Robert Hood (M-Plant) and his daughter lyric land on Aus Music with their third album of immaculately produced, fine tuned, ass shaking dancefloor heaters. Once again spreading the gospel of techno with an increasingly Chicago House rooted sound, there's plenty of anthemic sounds here that are destined to soundtrack many ecstatic moments at clubs and festivals across the planet.

Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus 'Presents INFINITY “Infinitum” - Maida Vale Session' is one of ten radio sessions being released by Warp Records on the occasion of their big three-oh. Compared to the rest of the label Flying Lotus is too old to be new guard and too new to be old guard. Nonetheless, his hip hop abstractions are a big reason why Warp is still so relevant.

Flørist
4 Letter Word

Canadian artist Flørist (aka Logan Sturrock) has just moved to... go on guess where.... Berlin ....joining the entirety of the electronic music community but also upping sticks from his homeland.
