Urodela is made in two parts. The first part, Gamut, is inspired by John Cage’s Six Melodies whilst part two, Rondo, is based on the 17th century musical form it is named after.

The Mitsuko & Svetlana label exhumes an incredible jazz-funk fusion record from the Eighties. Ben Lee
Quarter Century Classix

Quarter Century Classics is an album of covers by Ben Lee. It came about due to him being trapped in a Chicago hotel room after heavy snowfall grounded all flights. Chicago was where Lee recorded his debut album, Grandpaw Would, so it holds a lot of memories for him - it reminded him of a time of musical discovery. The album includes cover of songs by The Breeders, Daniel Johnston and more.

Bobby Blackbird
The Master Blenda

We very nearly didn’t get The Master Blenda, the first solo single from Equiknoxx mastermind Bobby Blackbird. Shortly after the tune's conception Blackbird was in a near-fatal car crash and spent months in hospital. He emerged more determined than ever to complete the track, one that turns away from Equiknoxx’s twisted dancehall style and heads towards a hotstepping ska sound. Turned out with a band that included several members of Raging Fyah, ‘The Master Blenda’ is a triumph in every sense of the word. Exile The Brave and Blackbird’s Equiknoxx buddy Time Cow dub it out on the B-side.

Bon Iver
22, A Million

That isolated cabin in the woods feels a long way away now: Justin Vernon’s Bon Iver seem to have made new album 22, A Million in a cabin in the internet instead. Lots of auto-tune, lo-fi crunch next to high-fi shimmer, and track titles to trump any vaporwave you could throw at it. Take your pick of CD, cassette tape or vinyl editions: there is even a deluxe LP edition with a bonus 12” of extended versions. On Jagjaguwar

Carl Thiel
Seis Manos (Music From The Netflix Original Series)

With scores such as From Dusk ‘Til Dawn and Machete under his belt, it seems that Carl Thiel would be the natural choice for scoring the animated Netflix series Seis Manos. The series centres around the lives of three friends, once orphaned, who were trained in martial arts set in a fictional town in 1970s Mexico. The music mixes the cool sounds of ‘60 and ‘70s movies with modern action film scores, seasoned with Mexican instrumentation.

Chris Corsano / Massimo Pupillo
Via Combusta

Those in the know will immediately identify this as a premium slice of heavy-hitting improvisation: how could it fail to be with this personnel? Massimo Pupillo plays grinding noise-bass for Zu, and Chris Corsano has played impossibly-expressive drums alongside almost every notable member of the experimental music scene. Consequently, Via Combusta kicks ass.

Chris Moss Acid
Machine Heavy

Chris Moss Acid and Balkan Vinyl make perfect sense together. In fact, it’s quite surprising to find out that Machine Heavy is the first EP from the Bournemouth producer to be released on Posthuman’s label. Christopher Tignor
A Light Below

The fourth LP from Christopher Tignor is another set of intricate modern chamber music. On A Light Below strings dance across one another in a manner that recalls Ravel and Shostakovich, but the use of processed electronics, percussion and triggered synths gives the album a distinctly contemporary edge. Think Owen Pallett crossed with someone like Nils Frahm or Oneohtrix Point Never.

Christopher Young
Hellbound: Hellraiser II (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

I could just list all the films that Christopher Young has scored, but I don’t have time, and I’m sure you don’t have time to read it. Fair to say he’s done a few, though, and therefore knows what he’s doing. For Hellbound: Hellriaser II he mixes choirs, electronics and a massive orchestra to create a score that multiplies the terror on screen.

Whether you are from Swinton or Worksop, Castleford or Swillington this should be your go-to dancefloor record. 2LP edition one half vocals, one half instrumentals.

COMA
Voyage Voyage

Presumably titled after Desireless's 1986 smash, this is the German COMA not to Polish rock band of the same name. They make emotional electronica and dreamy soundscapes using an array of instruments both real and computerised and add in vocals to give you the melancholic Germanic pop thrills you require. Another safe space where analogue can meet digital without a fist fight ensuing.

Dense, brooding music from Berlin’s Contagious here. Sometimes Australians couldn't give a Castlemaine XXXX for refined music. What they want is beer-sodden garage rock played at terrifying volumes in terrifying pubs. Cult of Luna
A Dawn to Fear

Get yourself strapped in for the big one from heavy, heavy post metallers Cult of Luna as they take you on a 79 minute rollercoaster ride through their ominous atmospheres and pummelling riffs. The fact that they only manage eight songs in this time tells you all you need to know about the crushing slo-mo churns and brooding orchestrated blasts of post-rock from these long term heavies. For the uninitiated think Neurosis, Isis or the heavier end of the post- rock spectrum.

Erlon Chaves
Procura-se uma Virgem

Despite dying in 1974 at the age of just 41, Erlon Chaves is still well-known in his native land for his work in TV and film scoring. Chaves brought elements of funk and samba to the world of library music, and these unusual elements set him apart from many of his contemporaries in the field. His score for 1971 soft-porn flick Procura-se uma Virgem is a perfect setting for his groovy, slightly louche brand of soundtrack work. Now reissued via Mad About Records.

Fela Kuti & Afrika 70
V.I.P. (Vagabonds In Power)

Previously only available on vinyl as part of the Box Set series many moons ago, Knitting Factory re-issues V.I.P. (Vagabonds In Power). Originally released in 1979 and recorded at the Berlin Jazz Festival the previous autumn, it’s a portrait of Fela Kuti in transition. Not only was it recorded right between the break-up of his Africa 70 group and the formation of Egypt 80, it was the last album that Fela made with long-time drummer Tony Allen.

Underground System

Previously only available on vinyl as part of the Box Set series many moons ago, Knitting Factory issues Fela Kuti’s Underground System album (also known as U.S.). Recorded with his Egypt 80 band and released in 1992, it was sadly the final album of new material in the Afrobeat legend’s lifetime.

Floorplan
Supernatural

Detroit minimal techno pioneer Robert Hood (M-Plant) and his daughter lyric land on Aus Music with their third album of immaculately produced, fine tuned, ass shaking dancefloor heaters. Once again spreading the gospel of techno with an increasingly Chicago House rooted sound, there's plenty of anthemic sounds here that are destined to soundtrack many ecstatic moments at clubs and festivals across the planet.

Floorplan
Fiyaaaa! / His Eye Is On The Sparrow feat. Carol Otis

Since 2016, Floorplan has been a compelling collaboration between Nineties techno icon Robert Hood and his daughter Lyric, a coming together of the old-school and the cutting-edge. While they put together another studio album, this 12” single arrives to plug the gap, consisting of a new track ‘Fiyaaaa!’ along with a cover of gospel hymn ‘His Eye Is On The Sparrow’.

Flying Lotus
Presents INFINITY “Infinitum” - Maida Vale Session

Flying Lotus 'Presents INFINITY “Infinitum” - Maida Vale Session' is one of ten radio sessions being released by Warp Records on the occasion of their big three-oh. Compared to the rest of the label Flying Lotus is too old to be new guard and too new to be old guard. Nonetheless, his hip hop abstractions are a big reason why Warp is still so relevant.

Flørist
4 Letter Word

Canadian artist Flørist (aka Logan Sturrock) has just moved to... go on guess where.... Berlin ....joining the entirety of the electronic music community but also upping sticks from his homeland. To celebrate, he's grown a moustache and prepped his first-ever release on The Trilogy Tapes. What we have are four slabs of dark, dangerous, dubby and dreamy underground techno/house with some seriously percussive beats and gently sizzling f/x.

Fu Manchu
Live At Roadburn 2003

Californian stoner rockers Fu Manchu blew the roof off Roadburn Festival in 2003, despite the lack of roof. They were that good. Live At Roadburn 2003 shows them previewing a couple of tracks from the, then forthcoming, album Start The Machine whilst also finding time to dust off classics such as Squash That Fly, Hell On Wheels, Boogie Van and King Of The Road.

FUMU
SKINNED

I love this job but sometimes coming up with 300 characters about some of the more obscure releases can be a struggle. Take this 7" on Youth. It's by FUMU and it's called Skinned. The press release gives a tiny bit away by suggesting it is called Skinned Alive by Prince Fumu and all the tracks are untitled. That's all I have to go on. The internet itself reveals nothing else. Probably worth buying if you know what it is.

Fursaxa
Immured

Fursaxa’s psychedelic acid-folk uses organs, dulcimers and cheap casio keyboards to tap into the dark foundations of traditional folk music. The queasy drones are wonderful, but it’s the overdubbed Nico-esque vocals which are really wonderful. Sloowax are making Fursaxa’s Immured available on vinyl in an edition of 300 copies.

Future Islands
Tomorrow / The Fountain

Way before their Letterman-induced mainstream success, Future Islands were a neat little synth pop band with a singer one part Sam Cooke, one part an excitable braying walrus. This standalone single was released on the Upset the Rhythm label and contains two more of their soulful sighs Tomorrow and the Fountain. Now because they are all dead famous and that we get a limited clear vinyl pressing of just 300.

Hieroglyphic Being
A Synthetic Love Life Vol 3

More astral acid from Hieroglyphic Being here. A Synthetic Love Life Vol. 3 contains four further wedges of Jamal Moss’s idiosyncratic club tackle. Anyone familiar with the producer’s style will know that there’s no-one who can take the old Midwest house/techno sounds to strange new places quite like Hieroglyphic Being (maybe the closest competitor is Afrikan Sciences, but he doesn't have the dancefloor rigour of Moss). A Synthetic Love Life Vol. 3 proves that all over again while also ratcheting up the tempo a little at times - the opening and closing cuts sound like juke on the moon.

Ian William Craig
A Turn of Breath - Extended

Q:What do you get if you cross an opera singer with a bedroom recording artist? A:Ian William Craig. A Turn Of Breath was the Canadian artist’s debut album and was noted for smashing two ostensibly wildly disparate genres together, opera and tape experiments. Craig’s voice adds both beautiful and mournful qualities to the recordings, whilst his reel-to-reel tape antics obscure them in a gorgeous haze. This extended version of the LP comes with an LP of additional material, including Short Of Breath EP. Limited to 1000 copies, housed in a gatefold sleeve on Recital Program.

Jacky Giordano

Jacky Giordino was a session musician making library music. He also made music under the names Jacky Nodaro and Jacky Sherylee. Lori Goldston
Things Opening

Like shops... or envelopes. Lori Goldston plays the violincello which, as you might guess is a four stringed instrument lower in tone than a viola but higher than a cello. That's not even the most unusual thing about Goldston's playing  -  she disregards any form of conformity and her classical training to make pieces which are both delicate and gritty and with nods to baroque and Americana style playing. Comes in two quite differing halves, both distinctive and both something quite new to discover.
