No Man's Sky: Music For An Infinite Universe

Alex Turner
Submarine (Original Songs)

Submarine was the debut film from actor and director Richard Ayoade. The coming of age drama was a perfect vehicle for a soundtrack by Arctic Monkeys Alex Turner. Showcasing a more mature and reflective side to his songwriting, these six mostly acoustic offerings point the way towards his future work as part of the Last Shadow Puppets. As always lyrically dextrous, this is an overlooked but essential part of his back catalogue.

American Football
American Football (LP3)

20 years ago American Football, formed by Mike Kinsella of Cap’n Jazz, made their eponymously titled post rock-meets-emo debut and split up. The album is highly regarded in many quarters, including here at Norman Records. A follow-up surprised us in 2016, with Mike’s brother Nate expanding the line-up, and now we have the third installment. Features guest performances from Hayley Williams of Paramore and Elizabeth Powell of Land Of Talk.

Amy Winehouse
Back To Black

Back To Black was the second and final album by Amy Winehouse. It was regarded as a classic pretty much upon on its release. Here she found her ideal musical partner in Mark Ronson whose soulful production was the perfect backdrop to her incredible voice. Contains Rehab, Love Is A Losing Game and Tears Dry On Their Own.

Peel Session 2

Despite being 30 years olds now, Warp Records still very much find themselves on the forefront of music. Following their celebratory 30 hour radio broadcast the label are releasing ten radio sessions recorded by some of their most iconic artists. 'Peel Sessions 2' was first recorded in 1992 by one Aphex Twin. Presented in a highly collectable sleeve.

Barry Gray
UFO (Original Television Soundtrack)

Presented on double-lilac vinyl, this is the original soundtrack to short-lived television series ‘UFO’, the first-ever live-action series from Gerry and Sylvia Anderson - yes, the people behind ‘Thunderbirds’, ‘Captain Scarlet’ et al - and which aired between 1970 and 1973. Composed by inimitable Barry Gray with his trademark dramatics!

Beat Happening
We Are Beat Happening

Will you just look at this. The holy grail for fans of Beat Happening and fans of underground lo-fi pop in general. Beat Happening were pioneers of the lo-fi and indie-pop movement and now you can get all six of their albums packaged up in a 7LP set with a 40 page book and liner notes from like minded soul Lois Maffeo. Remortgage your house. Do whatever you have to do (legally) to get this.

Charli XCX

There was a girl on my course at university who was best friends with Charli XCX from school. This was just when Ms. XCX was beginning to become famous (we’re talking ‘Boom Clap’ days), and I often wondered if I’d ever get to meet her at a houseparty or whatever, but our paths never crossed. Her friend was nice though, so by that logic we’re going to say that Charli XCX is probably pretty nice too. Go Charli! Her third, sort-of-self-titled LP will surely cement her legacy as the premiere alt-pop star of our age - the inheritor of Lady Gaga’s crown, perhaps? Charli features the ginormous singles ‘1999’ (ft. Troye Sivan) and ‘Blame It On Your Love’ (ft. Lizzo). Haim, A. G. Cook, Cupcakke and a bunch of other famous names also contribute.

Point was the fourth album by excellent Japanese musician Cornelius and was the follow up to his breakthrough album Fantasma. It has become something of an influential record over the years with its technicolour palette of sounds infusing records by the likes of Beck, Phoenix and the Strokes. Now is the time for the luxury re-issue which includes three previously unheard remixes.

Courtney Barnett
Sometimes I Sit And Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit

Sometimes I Sit And Think And Sometimes I Just Sit is the debut album by Australian singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett. It follows on from the brilliant Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas which was released in 2013. Filled with lyrically sharp, catchy songs, this album confirms Courtney Barnett as a genuinely brilliant and unique artist.

David Firth
Umbilical World

David Firth is a British animator probably best known for 'Salad Fingers', a creepy little short that was passed around my secondary school like a filthy rumour. Umbilical World is a retrospective of the last 13 years of his work, collected as one horrifying and alluring feature length. Also features a making of and audio commentary.

DJ Shadow

DJ Shadow’s sample-built 1996 debut album Entroducing….. has all the drama you’d expect from a title with ellipses two-thirds longer than the standard. As tense as it slaps, this is truly one of the the best instrumental trip/hip-hop albums ever made. The deluxe edition comes with expanded liner notes, photos, alternate versions, and remixes from the likes of Kuedo and Teklife.

Dr. Dre

A legend in West Coast hip hop, Dr. Dre's back-catalogue is chock-a-block with mega-hits. '2001' contains all the hallmarks of a blockbuster classic, with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dog and Eminem all making appearances. Described as 'uncharacteristically' sparse in the media, this record truly justfiys Dre's reputation as a 'composer' as much as a 'producer'.

Drew Millward
Norman Records Gift Voucher (2014)

We've commissioned self-confessed music 'n' burgers 'n' beer enthusiast Drew Millward to produce this postcard for us, and mighty pleased are we with it too. For our money, Drew's one of the best graphic artists around at the moment and has absolutely nailed it for us with this design. Literally everyone who receives one of this will feel blessed.

Drew Millward
Norman Records screen-printed poster

Available in only very limited numbers, we’ve once again teamed up with Leeds-based visual artist Drew Millward for a specially illustrated, screen-printed poster. It boasts Millward’s intricate and striking visual style "Custom Hand Drawn Illustrations for the Modern World" as he puts it. Millward's unique, often psychedelic visual work has been created for the likes of (amongst many others) Mogwai, Bon Iver, Melvins and Sonic Youth. He's such a legend, he's even signed and numbered each poster for us.

Drew Millward
Norman Records Gift Voucher (2019)

Want to give someone the gift of (recorded) music? Struggling to get something for the birthday of a music-mad significant other? Keen to get your hands on some work by the fantastic visual artist Drew Millward? Then why not cop one of our fetching new gift vouchers. Prices range from £20 to a royal £100, and all come with a bonus postcard designed by Mr. Millward. We wouldn’t say that the Norman Records Gift Voucher is the best present in the world, but it’s in the top one.

Elbow and the BBC Concert Orchestra
The Seldom Seen Kid (Live At Abbey Road)

Surely one of Elbow’s finest achievements, the Seldom Seen Kid album is now more than ten years old! To celebrate, here is Elbow plus the BBC Concert Orchestra, performing the album in full with lots of lush extra string bits at the prestigious Abbey Road studios. It's a beautiful performance of a wonderful album, recorded in perfect clarity from a band loved by the BBC even more than they love the Conservative party.

Florence + The Machine
Lungs (10th Anniversary Edition)

Does Florence And The Machine’s debut LP Lungs hold up a decade on from its release? Only one way to find out I guess. As tenth anniversary editions go this new pressing of Lungs is fairly low-key - just some new colours on the vinyl this time around. For the cheap seats - Lungs is the one with ‘You’ve Got The Love’, ‘Dog Days Are Over’ and the definitely-lyrically-watertight ‘Kiss With A Fist’ on it.

Gang Starr
One Of The Best Yet

Classic Brooklyn hip-hop duo Gang Starr disbanded in 2003. It seemed that there would be no more. In 2010, one half of the duo, Guru, tragically died seemingly ending any hope once and for all. His partner in rhyme over the years, DJ Premier, never gave up hope that there would be another Gang Starr album. 16 years after their last album, The Ownerz, we have a new album. One Of The Best Yet lets us know from the off that it’s up there with classics such as Step Into The Area. Features a guest appearance from J.Cole.

Gene Clark
No Other

Originally released in 1974 to critical praise but little commercial impact, The Byrds’ founder Gene Clark poured his heart and soul - and quite a lot of his own money - into No Other, a massively ambitious and strikingly beautiful record spanning psychedelia, country, folk and soul. For its 45th anniversary, 4AD are re-issuing the re-mastered album on CD and LP, and also in a lavish box-set containing a myriad of alternate mixes and bonus tracks, a documentary film and extensive liner notes and essays.

Love From The Planet Gong: The Virgin Years 1973-75

Sound the Gong gong, this is a big one. Love From The Planet Gong: The Virgin Years 1973-1975 is centred around the four LPs that the legendary psychedeliacs released in that time (Flying Teapot, Angel’s Egg, You and Shamal), but there’s so very much more going on here. Across these 13 (!) CDs we get a plethora of concert recordings, Peel Sessions, bonus tracks and alternate mixes. Most of the tracks here are previously unreleased and all are rendered in the highest possible audio quality. Extensive liner notes, an illustrated lyric booklet and Daevid Allen’s hitherto-unseen artwork help to make Love From The Planet Gong: The Virgin Years 1973-1975 the definitive chronicle of one of what is arguably band’s greatest epoch.

Graeme Miller & Steve Shill
The Moomins: Winter Wunderland Edition

People of a certain age love the Moomins. It was the quaint Swedish children's television show about a gang of woodland creatures who looked something like hippopotamuses. Weirdly, the evocative, dreamy music was made in Leeds by a couple of punk-era musicians Graeme Miller & Steve Shill and Finders Keepers have already issued the soundtrack on vinyl to the joy of middle-aged dads everywhere. This version is a Winter Wunderland Edition which, without the benefit of further information, we presume is the same soundtrack in more 'wintery' sleeve art.

Art Angels

Grimes is back. Not that she’s been away really, but she certainly split some opinions when she released Go in 2014. With Art Angels she has turned away from the populist pop-trap fad and delivered 14 tracks of addictive leftfield pop. Featuring even more instrumentation played by herself as well as collaborations with Janelle Monáe and Aristophanes.

Happy Mondays
The Early EP's

Hey....sorted etc. Drug-addled but fooking influential Madchester posse Happy Mondays are re-issuing their early EPs on an LP box set. It contains the Forty Five, Freaky Dancin/The Egg, Tart Tart and 24 Hour Party People EPs all remastered and on different coloured vinyl. It's like a kaleidoscope of sounds and colours, man. Gonna cost you forty big ones. See ya down the Hacienda. #stillravin'.

A Beautiful Thing: IDLES Live at Le Bataclan

Recorded at the end of a massive, celebratory world tour in December 2018 at Paris’ prestigious Le Bataclan, IDLES tore through a cathartic set of highlights from their career so far, including covers on top of tracks from their two beloved albums Brutalism and Joy As an Act of Resistance. That set is captured on new live album A Beautiful Thing - available on 2xCD or limited edition clear multi-coloured vinyl (orange, pink or lime green).

Irmin Schmidt
Villa Wunderbar

Irmin Schmidt was one of the founding members of brilliant German band Can. Villa Wunderbar is a four LP box set of his solo ventures. The first two LPs compile the best stuff from his solo albums, recorded over a period of over 30 years, whilst the other two LPs are the best of his TV and film soundtrack work compiled by none other than German filmmaker Wim Wenders.

James Green
Norman Records Gift Voucher

As anyone who has ever used our 'Click And Collect' service knows, our premises over here in Leeds aren't exactly beautiful. Even visitors from the former East Germany have been known to gasp at the unforgiving concrete monstrosity we call home.   It always takes a special kind of talent to see inner beauty, and in James Green we found such a talent. If James's linocut landscapes can somehow manage to make Sheffield (yes, Sheffield!) look poetic then he can surely produce something for us, we thought. And so it proved. Even the wheelie bin looks nice. The fact that he has also worked for Domino Records...well, we won't hold that against him.

Joanna Newsom
Have One On Me

It had been three years since Joanna Newsom’s previous album, Ys. To make up for this gap, she made a triple album, Have One On Me, essentially one single album for each year that she missed. Despite its lengthy sprawl, it was more accessible than its predecessor, drawing comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush, albeit with Joanna's indelible stamp. It should definitely be thought of as an essential addition to any record collection.

John Carpenter in association with Alan Howarth
They Live

"Record Store Collapses Under Weight of John Carpenter Re-issues" was an earlier the Onion-style headline we once used to try to make you crack a smile and lo and behold here is another re-press from the soundtrack lord. This time it's the soundtrack for They Live one of his urban Western type films with a fist fight and a sci-fi twist. One of the most interesting things about this re-issue is that it has artwork designed by Alan Hynes which reveals hidden messages when you put on the enclosed pair of sunglasses. Worth the £35.99 price tag alone for that.

John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies
Halloween: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Expanded Edition)

Halloween: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Expanded Edition) sees Halloween creator John Carpenter team up with his son, Cody Carpenter and Godson, Daniel Davies to score the 2018 version of the popular horror flick. The score is underpinned by several reworkings of Carpenter’s original synth soundtrack main theme. A must for Carpenter fans.

Kendrick Lamar

Good Kid, M.A.A.D City was the major label debut from soon-to-be-pretty-big rapper Kendrick Lamar. It was an introduction in more ways than one as it was a concept LP about Lamar's upbringing in the 'hood. Lyrically complex with sub-plots and red herrings galore it featured a more subtle production that has often been seen in hip-hop with brooding instrumentals and deep atmospherics leading to both underground and commercial accolades.

Kendrick Lamar
To Pimp a Butterfly

I'm not sure about pimping a butterfly but Kendrick Lamar certainly knows the smooth. Sampling and influenced by the '70s greats of Parliament, Clinton (George not me) and Marvin Gaye, he twists black anger into new and danceable shapes. Challenging at times but a remarkable follow up to 2012's 'Good Kid, M.A.A.d City' and a key album in Compton's strong hip hop legacy.

Kendrick Lamar

The biggest of big deals in 2017: a new full-length album from Kendrick Lamar himself. Damn features fairly large guests like Rihanna and, um, U2, but Kendrick doesn’t need any big-name support to tell a narrative and craft wonderful beats. This soon-to-be-album-of-the-year record is released by Polydor.

Kim Gordon
No Home Record

A new solo record from the iconoclastic Kim Gordon, co-founder of Sonic Youth and an acclaimed solo artist since their demise. No Home Record is preoccupied with the feelings of transience and displacement - both physical and spiritual - that go hand-in-hand with modern existence, and consists of nine tracks of exploratory alternative rock.

King Crimson
In The Court of The Crimson King (An Observation By King Crimson) [50th Anniversary Edition]

A 50th anniversary edition of one of rock music’s most iconic debut albums - not least for its iconic and unsettling artwork. King Crimson’s In The Court of The Crimson King was one of the first proper visions for progressive rock, and comes on a re-mastered 2xLP package featuring alternate takes of albums tracks on disc two, or a 3xCD + Blu-Ray set.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Flying Microtonal Banana

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have already pretty much mastered that pulsing garage rocky sound, but they are still aiming to release five (yep, five) albums in 2017. With that in mind, it makes sense to try something a little new right? Flying Microtonal Banana finds them playing around with modified microtonal instruments for a slightly tweaked-out sound. Released by Heavenly.

Lana Del Rey
Lust For Life

Now where have I heard that title before? Nope. It's not coming. Anyway here is global superstar Lana Del Ray with her guest straddled fourth album. The Weeknd, A$AP Rock and Stevie Nicks all make appearances here and its absolutely heartwarming to see her grinning away on the sleeve.

Lana Del Rey
Norman Fucking Rockwell!

Geographically confused chanteuse Lana Del Rey returns with her sixth album and her first since she discovered swearing. She's pictured on the cover cavorting with none other than the grandson of Jack Nicholson and possibly as a matter of note I should say that it contains fourteen new songs most co-written with fun.'s Jack Antonoff. Buy your copy from Norman Fucking Records.

Lee 'Scratch' Perry
Scratch and Company - Chapter 1 The Upsetters

Sold out - sorry!

Melodrama by Lorde is the follow-up to the incredibly successful Pure Herione. Her debut was a suprisingly assured effort given that she was only 16. Now at the ripe old age of 20, Melodrama comes with a weight of expectation, but nothing that the girl, who was once described by David Bowie as being the future of music, can’t handle. Limited, deluxe edition translucent royal blue vinyl LP housed in a gatefold sleeve with six inserts and lyric booklet or 140g black vinyl LP in single sleeve with insert on Universal.

Now as much of a christmas standard as "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree" by Mel and Kim. Low are the perfect band to soundtrack Christmas, coming as they do from the snow-bound city of Duluth which glistens like Christmas half the year round. This short album combines lovely originals "Just Like Christmas" and "Long Way Around the Sea" with spooky versions of traditional song. It's the perfect soundtrack to my Christmas tradition of driving around the less salubrious neighbourhoods, checking out the houses all ridiculously lit up.

Minor Threat
Out of Step

You may be surprised given their influence that Out of Step is the only album by Washington DC hardcore punk band Minor Threat. They'd already broken up once before recording the album but the band bedded down to make a classic of its genre notable for complex chord progressions and time signatures at odds with the previous more simplistic structures. A now iconic statement of intent before the band splintered off into the likes of Fugazi and Dag Nasty.

Mort Garson
Mother Earth's Plantasia

Mort Garson was a pioneer of electronic music in the 1960s and an early user of Robert Moog's synthesizer. 'Plantasia' released in 1976 added warmth to the previously darker and colder melodies of earlier electronic releases. By turn playful, surreal or sinister, this is a diverse collection of sounds from a true innovator.

Mumford & Sons
Sigh No More (10 Year Anniversary 7-inch box)

It’s been ten years since Marcus Mumford and his plum-throated Sons wiped away our tears and asked us to 'Sigh No More'. It worked - the banjo-twanging Chappiness of tracks like ‘The Cave’ and ‘Little Lion Man’ has cured all our ills, healed all of our divisions and meant that there have been no reasons to sigh since (not in the United Kingdom, anyway). To celebrate a decade of sigh-less bliss 'Sigh No More' has been reissued as a boxset of 7” singles that each come in expensive papier. You also a bunch of images and a ribbon. Here’s to many more years in which we shan’t sigh one single time.

MTV Unplugged In New York (25th Anniversary Edition)

Regularly heralded as one of the finest live albums of all time, Nirvana’s iconic MTV Unplugged In New York is being re-issued in expanded form to mark the 25th anniversary of its release. Kurt Cobain’s songwriting was revealed to be just as emotionally hefty, even without the dynamism of Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl’s normal volume - indeed, the thought of Grohl drumming with brushes is a strange one even now. The double-vinyl package features the original tracklisting, in addition to five bonus rehearsal performances that were previously only available on the DVD edition.

Oh Sees
Face Stabber

Some things are always true.  You're always less than 6 months away from a John Dwyer release. That release will be by a band using a variant on Oh Sees as its name. Dwyer will have recorded some of that album wearing jean shorts that stop below the knee. And the songs that fill that release will be high intensity fuzzy garage rock.

In Cauda Venenum

All rise for Opeth. The Swedish prog-metal titans make it a baker’s dozen of studio LPs with the extremely Opeth-titled In Cauda Venenum (translation: Poison In The Tale). Given that this lot have long ploughed their own furrow it would be silly to compare this music to anyone other than Opeth themselves, so let’s just say that if you’ve dug their wending rock epics before then you’ll likely be able to get behind In Cauda Venenum. One notable feature of In Cauda Venenum is that it comes in both English- and Swedish-language versions.

Popol Vuh
The Essential Album Collection Vol. 1

Prog rock-electronica outfit Popol Vuh probably reside in the shadows of Can and Neu when it comes to staking their claim as the most influential ‘70s band to come out of Germany in the 1970s. Nevertheless, they are still trailblazers when it comes to the use of the Moog synthesizer. They also hit it off with German filmmaker Werner Herzog, recording soundtracks to several classic films. 'The Essential Album Collection Vol. 1' includes; 'Affenstunde' (1970), 'Hosianna Mantra' (1972), 'Einsjäger & Siebenjäger' (1974), 'Aguirre' (1976), 'Nosferatu' (1978) 2LP.

1999 (Remastered)

Containing a whopping 35 previously unreleased recordings, the career-defining '1999' album of pop-rock royalty Prince is here re-issued. This super deluxe version also includes a live album, along with various other goodies which celebrate Prince's enormous worldwide impact - quintessential stuff for fans of the Minnesota-born pioneer.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
And Now For The Whatchamacallit

As you can possibly imagine, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are from Australia and play exuberant psychedelic rock. They've been wowing audiences everywhere for the past year or so and now it's time for the debut album proper extravaganza. Expect manic psych thrills and raucous off kilter rock explosions.

Bohemian Rhapsody (The Original Soundtrack)

I’m probably right in thinking that Norman’s stance on Queen is that they’re crap [editorial note; it's not!].....[Actual Editor's Note: It is!] . Love ‘em or hate ‘em, though, it is undeniable that Freddie Mercury was a one-off and they don’t make music like anyone else. Here we have the soundtrack to the massively successful Bohemian Rhapsody, the film about Freddie Mercury and Queen. It’s a mix of previously released Queen songs and previously unreleased songs from their legendary Live Aid performance. You also get the bonus of the 20th Century Fox fanfare being played in Brian May’s signature guitar style. The press release bangs on about sales achieved in Q4 - when did it stop being about the music, man? Double Heavyweight Vinyl LP on Virgin EMI.

Queens Of The Stone Age
Era Vulgaris

Queens of the Stone Age's fifth album 'Era Vulgaris' is perhaps their most diverse and experimental record. Gone are the warm fuzz guitars and mysterious atmosphere of 'Lullabies to Paralyze' and in come the crunchy, angular riffs and uneasy mood. There's the influence of electronic music and synth pop, Southern rock and noise rock all over this record, with the Queens shaping classic tracks like "Sick, Sick, Sick", "3's & 7's" and "Make It wit Chu". Bulby approves.

Queens Of The Stone Age
Rated R

A vinyl re-issue for Rated R, an album that’s still arguably the creative high-point for Josh Homme’s Queens Of The Stone Age. Originally released in 2000, the album was a sleek and streamlined behemoth teeming with creativity after the mixed bag of their self-titled debut two years before. Spawning timeless hits ‘Feel Good Hit of the Summer’ and ‘The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret’, Rated R is re-pressed with its original blue artwork, with a 12”x24” insert and international bonus track ‘Ode To Clarissa’.

Ramin Djawadi
Game of Thrones: Season 2 (Music from the HBO Series)

Season 2 of HBO's phenomenally successful costume drama Game of Thrones features more swords, more dragons but also another lovely soundtrack by Ramin Djawadi who had scored season one to high acclaim. His sorrowful and grandly orchestrated music works just as well with or without medieval jousting and scenes that some viewers may find upsetting.

Game of Thrones: Season 8 (Selections from the HBO Series) [The Iron Throne Version]

If you can't afford the 3LP set we are selling elsewhere on this wonderful site then for £9.99 cheaper you can get a truncated version of Ramin Djawadi's soundtrack from the eighth and worst series of HBO's poorly-lit sword drama. This is a single length version, with tracks selected by we're not sure who but it results in a nice bite-sized version containing all your eighth series favourite tunes.

Sandra Kerr & John Faulkner
The Music From Bagpuss

Hello all 40+ somethings out there. You'll remember big saggy 70s cloth cat Bagpuss from your favourite childhood television show and the beautifully constructed folk soundtrack it snored around? Brings back memories doesn't it? Well the soundtrack actually works as a lovely album even without the nostalgia associated with the cat and now you can get it on a wonderful Christmas present-ready 'shop window' edition vinyl or book back CD with all your favourite slightly hip people talking about the album in an accompanying book. Wake up, and look at this thing that I bring!

Savage Pencil
Norman Records Gift Voucher

We commissioned the one and only Savage Pencil (Sav X / Edwin Pouncey) a few years back to produce our very first Norman Records postcard. It's still going strong. With a design purposely intended to scare children off buying vinyl (seriously, kids, don't start) you too can own an exclusive piece of art from a guy who has done work for everyone from The Fall to Madonna. We made that last bit up.

1000 Hurts

'1000 Hurts' was the third album by professional grump Steve Albini and his Shellac comrades. The album did nothing to dispel the notion that the band are very clever, hard rocking nerds. Contains the usual slash and burn guitars, math-rock arrangements and in jokes that will delight their cult following. Shellac never compromise, they don't need to and '1000 Hurts' is another album of them not compromising to good effect.

The Dead Don't Die: Original Score

SQÜRL once again team up with director Jim Jarmusch (and SQÜRL member) to score his film, The Dead Don’t Die. Sufjan Stevens
Songs For Christmas

How nice it would be to live in Sufjan world. Each year around the festive season he'd gather round with friends to make a Christmas EP. He'll be there in a massive jumper singing away. Heartwarming. Well this tradition went on for a few years and now you can get all the yuletide fruits on this box set of all the songs. Sufjan's folky and melancholy tones are just perfect for Christmas listening. Let it sleet.

The 1975
The 1975

Who knew that when we watched Tim Healy on Auf Weidersen Pet and Denise Welch on Coronation Street that together they would make Matthew Healy who would found one of the biggest bands of the 2000s so far. This their debut started the process for they multi-layered eclectic approach bringing in electro-pop, emo and R & B to their on-the-surface rock band format. Their out-of-step 80s influences struck a chord particularly with younger listeners and the band have gone on to be hugely successful with further records featuring much longer titles than this one.

The Beatles
Abbey Road – 50th Anniversary Edition

Absolutely everything about The Beatles’ final album Abbey Road screams ‘iconic’ - the much-parodied artwork, the second half’s famous song suite, the top class contributions from all of the Fab Four (yes, even Ringo’s ‘Octopus’s Garden’...). In 2019, it gets the 50th anniversary re-mastering treatment. With the new stereo mix handled by Giles Martin at the famous itself, this re-issue comes in: standard CD; double CD; single, double or triple vinyl; or a lavish 4xCD box-set with hardcover book and Blu-Ray. The Magnetic Fields
69 Love Songs

If you wanted to make an incredibly long album and you figured 100 songs would be too many what would be the next number you'd pick? Anyway, Stephen Merritt did a ridiculous thing and wrote 69 indie pop songs about love and actually managed to pull it off. These are songs that had to be eccentric and endearing, which they are.

The Pop Group

Y by The Pop Group was their debut album, originally released in 1979. The post-punk band from Bristol were seen as pioneers of the genre. They mixed jazz, reggae and dub influences with punk to create something quite original. The band claim they were trying to mix Funkadelic with Captain Beefheart to see what happened.

Fear Inoculum

Arracka-tung-tung-tackka-nnka-nnka! Arrucky-tickan-tickan-tung… oh wait, sorry, we got our Korn and our Tool mixed up again. Thing is, you see, Tool have been away for so long now that we’d assumed them consigned to history - it’s now thirteen years since they released '10,000' Days, you know. Good to have them back though, especially when the band appear to have used their time away productively. Fifth studio album Fear Inoculum is another set of baroque, stadium-sized prog-metal from The Thinking Man’s Primus.

Tracey Thorn
Tinsel and Lights

Twitter's Tracey Thorn made this Christmas album back in 2012 lending her rich sumptuous voice to seasonal themed songs written by the likes of Low, Joni Mitchell, Jack White and Ron Sexsmith as well as a couple of of originals. Freshly re-issued Christmas fayre with guest spots from Green Gartside and 'im indoors Ben Watt.

Tyler, The Creator

Despite only just being released, Igor has already been pretty much universally recognised as one of the best records of Tyler, The Creator’s career. And who could deny this thing? The latest LP from the OFWGKTA badboy-turned-goodboy is as gorgeous as they come, a heady brew of neo-soul, The Neptunes-esque beats, hypnagogic pop and outsider art. More of this please.

Stranger Things: Music from the Netflix Original Series

Netflix Original Series Stranger Things perfectly combined the aesthetic of 80s horror and teen buddy films into one addictive ride. This CD/double LP relives the soundtrack that helped do this, with evocative hits from The Clash, Joy Division, Toto, Duran Duran and more - alongside dialogue from series one and two.

Factory Communications 1978-92

The compilation Factory Communications 1978-92 finally makes its way onto wax a full decade after the CD release. This bumper set needs little introduction - Factory Records, Tony Wilson, arguably the UK’s most important post-punk label, blah blah blah. All the big hitters are included here (yer Joy Divisions, yer Happy Mondays, yer New Orders) as well as some more obtuse Factory acts. This wide spread makes for a good blend of anthems and rarities - for every ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ there’s something like John Dowie’s ‘It’s Hard To Be An Egg’.
