Liam Gallagher
One of Us

Please please please pleeeeeeeeeease let this new Liam Gallagher single be a cover of ABBA’s heartbreak anthem ‘One Of Us’. Can you imagine - the man with a fork, in his world of soup, belting out one of Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid’s most achingly beautiful compositions. I mean, it’s not going to be - the writing credits alone tell us that 'One Of Us' is an LG original - but that’s not going to stop us dreaming. England expects.

Douglas Hart
X Film plus Ultra 7” + Let’s Form A Cell 12”

Unprecedented demand for the highly limited edition releases from Douglas Hart - filmmaker and former bassist / founding member of The Jesus & Mary Chain - has led The Blank Tapes to commit the X Film Plus Ultra 7” single and Let’s Form a Cell 12” record to one, six-track cassette release.

Paranoid London
(Vi-Vi) Vicious Games

What Vicious Games to play, what vicious things to do. No, this new release from Paranoid London and Josh Caffe has nothing to do with Chris Isaak’s timeless masterpiece with the similar name. In fact, ‘(Vi-Vi) Vicious Games’ is an altogether different vibe, a gloriously sultry Hercules And Love Affair-style house jam. On the (Vi-Vi) Vicious Games EP the original comes backed with a radio edit and an acid-drenched dub. Great stuff.

AN-i + Unhuman
s/t

AN-I is back on L.I.E.S., this time with UNHUMAN in tow. As one might expect from such an infernal union, the tracks on this self-titled EP are devilish slabs of body music that blend techno, industrial, minimal synth and post-punk influences. The likes of Alec Empire and The D.A.F. are all invoked in the cacophony of scuffed-up drums, yelping vocals and cheap, nasty basslines.

Les Particules

A limited edition pressing of the soundtrack to Blaise Harrison’s 2019 film Les Particules (tr: Particles, in English), which was nominated for the Camera D’Or at Cannes Film Festival. It’s composed by Belgian producer Èlg, who approaches the task with his typical M.O. of mixing musique concrete with fragments of pop.

Hand & Leg
Lust In Peace

Greek duo Hand and Leg make bass and drum music. There’s an important distinction between that and drum ‘n’ bass, in that this is post-punk / garage rock type stuff with an arty slant that has lyrics delivered via the force of spitting and screaming. Lust in Piece is their latest album, born from a busy period of writing, recording and touring that saw the pair earn a support slot with post-punk godheads, Wire.

Ben Vince & Jacob Samuel
I'll Stick Around

Recent records from both Ben Vince and Jacob Samuel have found the pair experimenting with electronics and whatnot, but this new collaborative LP I’ll Stick Around sees them getting back to basics. 'Basics' for this saxophonist and pianist still count as an expansive free composition-style that combines classic avant-jazz stylings with post-minimalism and the cerebral expanses of discrete music, but you get what we mean - they’re using wood-and-metal instruments again rather than bleep-bloop toys.

Aspidistrafly
i hold a wish for you

The main thing I've learnt from reading through the sales notes for this re-pressed CD from pastoral soundscapers Apsidistrafly is that the music was based around a novel by Banana Yoshimoto. Just stop a minute... Banana? Anyway these ambient pieces take influences from her Moonlight Shadow novella (and yes before I joke about it, it was inspired by Mike Oldfield's song of the same name) and creates gorgeous acoustics and electronic textures warmed up by soothing vocal harmonies.

Noah Gibson
Krasch 2 (Convextion & E.R.P. Remixes)

Noah Gibson offers up two remixes of his track 'Krasch 2' on Krasch Records. Both remixes come from Dallas, Texas producer Gerard Hanson - the first mix is Hanson in techno mode as Convextion, and is almost soothing, as it's utterly slathered in white noise. Then we get him switching up into electro mode under his E.R.P. handle where he manages to find the acid within. A very interesting pairing of remixes.

Stirling March
Under Cover Lover

A long-overdue reissue on Kalita records of Stirling March’s cult favourite single Under Cover Lover, originally released back in 1985. Given a makeover with a welter of liner notes, interviews and exclusive photos, this Bahamian boogie fell by the wayside upon original release due to improper promotion, but has since become one of the rarest records of its genre.

Look right, this Balkan Vinyl lot yeah, they know what’s up. Label bosses Posthuman live and breathe acid traxx, and on Mutant City Acid 5 they serve up another quartet of tunes from fellow 303 fiends. A short-lived supergroup dating from the Nineties that included members of Soundgarden and Monster Magnet, Wellwater Conspiracy saw its participants leave behind their regular sounds and indulge in West Coast psychedelia. This special 7” mints two tracks from their 1997 debut Declaration of Conformity - early single ‘Sleeveless’ and a cover of Syd Barrett’s ‘Lucy Leave’.

Samba
Winona

When tracks make it to Reddit’s r/realdubstep thread you can be pretty confident that you’re in for the good stuff. SAMBA’s ‘Winona’, a fluttering triple-time jam in the vein of other recent DEEP MEDi drops from Jack Sparrow and Egoless, is certainly worthy of inclusion on the forum. As well as its title-track the Winona EP includes three more cuts that all combine serious bassweight with some arid, slightly industrial atmospherics.

Carl Oesterhelt
Eleven Pieces for Synthesizer

The title says it all really as German synth wizard Carl Oesterhelt uses up to fifteen different synthesizers to layer up the various instrumental pieces that comprise this which if I'm not mistaken is his first completely solo recording. Oesterhelt has form with his collaborations with the likes of the Notwist, Ms John Soda and FSK. Eleven Pieces for Synthesizer takes influence from both classical and kosmische on an album sure to appeal to synth nuts everywhere.

Koehler
Winged

The latest drop from DISK Records (Bambounou, Harmonious Thelonious) is a set of skull-shaking techno from former Whities/ESP Institute fellow Koehler. Tracks such as the Winged title cut feature kick drums that hit like sledgehammers and hoofing great basslines offset by atmospherics you’d almost describe as ethereal. For related artists think Randomer and Clouds.

Oliver Coates / S P A T I A L
Decouple ][ Series

OOH-Sounds’ Decouple ][ series has already seen contributions from artists like Dale Cornish and Georgia, but their latest pairing may be the juiciest yet. Cello savant Oliver Coates handles the A-side with the four-part work ‘Path in, J Lover One, Yomi, Umbo’ while Spatial serves up post-techno abstractions on the flip. Challenging but not unwelcoming, this Decouple ][ series instalment is one to check if you’ve dug Oberman Knocks or Shapednoise in the past.

Tenderlonious
Think Twice

The press release for Tenderlonious’ Think Twice EP proudly declares this thing to be ‘Detroit techno via Woking and South London!’. Well, we’ve no idea what music from Woking usually sounds like, and if we’re heading to the Midwest then honestly these tracks have more in common with the velveteen house aesthetic of Moodymann than they do with the tough techno of, say, Underground Resistance. At least they got the South London bit right - assuming that the South London scene they’re referring to is the jazz-tinged party stylings of labels like Rhythm Section International and not, like, So Solid Crew.

Djax-Re-Up Volume 2

Dekmantel takes another deep dive into the cult techno imprint Djax-Up-Beats for another serving of re-discovered Nineties cuts. The Dutch label played a critical role as a proving ground for some of the most important producers of the last couple of decades, and this double-LP set showcases some of these artists, including Glenn Underground and Felix Da Housecat and covering everything from raging house gems to ambient chill-outs.

Free Love
Extreme Dance Anthems

Free Love (the artists formerly known as Happy Meals) recorded their latest mini album in a studio that sits half way between a church and a sex club. This setting seems to suit their music which has the joyous togetherness seen in a church and all the throbbing and thrusting of your local sex club. Like a lot of groups this year, they made the record primarily to entertain themselves and other people in an attempt to escape the misery of the political world for a few minutes at least.

Beau Wanzer
Do The Spider Shimmy

Beau Wanzer has been putting his own spin on a blend of industrial, wave, techno and electro for the past six years or so, since first releasing records through L.I.E.S. Do The Spider Shimmy is a 6-track EP with tracks culled from a CD-R he gave to Solvent & Lowfish in 2003 when he worked in a Chicago record store. Recently unearthed, it shows that Wanzer’s trademark rawness, minimalism and vocals processed beyond recognition were all in place early on.

Suzanne Kraft
Slam

Opening with the bright synth blasts of the self-titled opening track, the playfulness on Suzanne Kraft's (aka Diego Herrera) 3-track 'Slam' EP doesn't let up from there. The Amsterdam-based producer showcases his prowess in fusing frenetic beats and melody, while coating his work in a layer of crisp production.

Loscil
Sketches From New Brighton

Sketches From New Brighton is yet another set of delightful pillowy electronica from the inimitable Loscil (Scott Morgan). Morgan’s blend of downtempo electronics, ambient music and dub techno has influenced artists like Edward and Nicolas Jaar, but when he’s on form there are very few other artists who can craft soundscapes as wintry or as beautiful. And on this, his sixth LP, Morgan is once again on form.

Oren Ambarchi’s recent Hubris record has a notable roster of guests, including the mighty Ricardo Villalobos. With talent like that on board, it seems a wise choice to let the producer expand on his role, which he does here. Robert Sotelo
Infinite Sprawling

Robert Sotelo returns to Upset The Rhythm with another set of charmingly idiosyncratic ballads. Sotelo has always had a knack for combining the intimacy of your classic singer-songwriter fare with the angular quirk of post-punk - think a plugged-in Richard Dawson, John Maus with the effects switched off, or perhaps a more erstwhile King Krule. Infinite Sprawling chronicles changes in Sotelo's life - a move from London to Glasgow, a final trip to visit his mother in Argentina - with affecting sensitivity. This one has the potential to be a cult hit, so maybe cop Infinite Sprawling early in order to claim bragging rights later on.

Ruins
Occasional Visits

Happy Valentine’s Day from Belgium’s excellent Stroom Records (Pablo’s Eye, DJ Bert & Eagle). The label’s latest drop is a superb collection of early minimal wave/synth-pop from Venetian group Ruins. Active between 1978 and 1985, the group turned out a run of highly evocative Italo LPs during their time together. Occasional Visit collects eight of the best tunes they set to tape between 1981 and 1984. You can imagine a young David Lynch getting lost in these when they first came out.

Hot Lotta

Reissue of Hot Lotta, a one off meeting between some of the greatest minds in German and Finish free jazz. Recorded in 1973, this is a truly savage example of what my jazz hating colleagues would call 'difficult sax music'. You can get a good idea of what this sounds like by looking at pictures of headliner Peter Brötzmann playing his instrument.

California based ambient musician r beny (all lowercase, please) returns with echo's verse on Dauw. Have they really called themselves that? And how do we ask for it in store? Well, as usual Google has the answer for everything and first up, this is a shadowy, Parisian vaporwave styled beatmaker about whom little is known except that you apparently pronounce it N-Five-X-Z. Gareth Quinn Redmond
Laistigh Den Ghleo

Laistigh Den Ghleo is a set of beautifully spare ambient compositions from Irish composer Gareth Quinn Redmond. For this record Redmond draws direct inspiration from Satoshi Ashikawa’s 1982 album Still Way (Wave Notation 2). Ashikawa said his music ‘should drift like smoke and become part of the environment surrounding the listener's activity’, and it’s easy to see Redmond taking this to heart in Laistigh Den Ghleo’s environmental watercolours. Midori Takada, another touchstone for Redmond, provides some of the liner notes.

Nervus
Tough Crowd

Nervus are an indie punk band from Watford. Tough Crowd is an album that gives out anger and joy in equal measure, The themes are of a political nature, like many bands they are dismayed and angry about the state of the world. They also hope to transmit joy and positivity, empowering their fans' ability to affect change.

Carter Burwell
Missing Link (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Missing Link is an animated film about an 8 foot tall fur-covered...man who goes on a journey to find his relatives. Carter Burwell has composed the score. He is known for scoring many films in his 36 year career, but perhaps, most known for his work with the Coen Brothers. Missing Link is a wildly imaginative film which gave Burwell lots to play with from mixing genres to generally having some whimsical fun.

Breakwater
Release The Beast

Philly funk band, Breakwater, were around in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. They only released two albums. Their second, Spalshdown, from 1980, contained the song, Release The Beast. A powerful piece of funk if ever there was one. It has been sampled a few times, but most notably, and of most interest to you lot, it formed a huge part of the Daft Punk track, Robot Rock. Here it is in 7" format with the smooth funk of Let Love In on the flip.

Remo Seeland
Hollow Body

The first album under his real name, Hollow Body was inspired by a revelatory physical experience that Swiss artist Remo Seeland had while travelling on the New York subway. Recorded between that city, Zurich and Reykjavik and implementing field recordings from urban and rural settings, it’s an album preoccupied by ideas of perception.

Amadeus is the latest inscrutable effort from New York-based artist Lord RAJA. While established fans are probably used to his music being built upon skewed hip-hop beats, his new album is informed rather more by conventional dance music. Includes ‘Fox Den’, released via the Adult Swim singles series back in 2018.

Run-DMC
King Of Rock

The follow-up which arrived less than 12 months after their ground-breaking self-titled debut, 1985’s King of Rock comprehensively proved that Run-DMC were here to stay, and so was hip-hop. The eponymous lead single ‘King of Rock’ may be the tentpole of the album, but the other eight tracks are fleet-footed demonstrations of tag-team vocals and rough-hewn beats.

Boy & Bear
Suck On Light

Suck On Light is the fourth album by Australian indie rock/folk combo, Boy & Bear. Their frontman, Dave Hosking, suffered from illness. The album was recorded with producer Colin Dupuis and charts his difficult road back to good health and also expresses the euphoria of being fit and well once more. Good on ya, Dave!

Josh Rouse
Dressed Up Like Nebraska

His later work may have gone all synthy and sophisticated and he may have now taken to wearing sunglasses on his album sleeves but go back to 1998 and Josh Rouse was just a folky songwriter out of Nebraska with a clutch of mournful songs in tow. 'Dressed Up Like Nebraska' is his debut recorded on an 8 track in his living room and catches the nascent songwriter at his evocative best.

SEER
No Resurrection

SEER are an electronics duo who like the titular beer and the National hail from Brooklyn, New York. They are possibly more fun than both, honing left field dance floor techniques in their studio taking the rhythm of the clubs and injecting it with some studio wizardry. The result is a kind of freeform underground dance psychedelia majoring in electro but blending the possibilities of techno and house into one kinetic splurge.

Bedchamber
Geography

Some lovely shoegazey indie from Indonesian group Bedchamber here. The band’s debut LP Geography does a good line in post-Real Estate dream-pop, all will-o’-the-wisp guitars and gently sighing vocals. From time to time the band ratchet it up a gear to lock into something more sprightly - quicksilver tracks like ‘Falter’ and 'Ride' have more in common with Diiv. All in all Geography is a delightful thing.

Steffi x Virginia
Work A Change

Sparks fly every time Steffi and Virginia get together. Two of Ostgut Ton’s longest-serving and most beloved artists, the previous collaborations between these two DJ/producers have given us bangers for the ages. The friends repeat the trick on new EP Work A Change, another set of primo Berlin-school house and techno. Outstanding work yet again.

Stone Irr
Performance

Warm and careworn indie from this Los Angeles by way of Indiana native. The move to the coast (doesn't everyone?) has spurred on a more 60s West Coast sound enlightening the previous understated songwriting. The press release compares this to so many artists that it's hard to know where Stone Irr are actually coming from but with Thom Yorke and Sufjan Stevens in the melting point this gives us a good idea of where this is headed.

Oh Baby
The Art of Sleeping Alone

Oh Baby - a duo consisting of cousins Rick Hornby and Jen Devereux - deliver a brilliant new EP on 12” transparent yellow vinyl. The Art of Sleeping Alone combines Hornby and Devereux’s professed love of classic indie and electronic influences, but then puts a modern pop twist on proceedings.

Tijuana Panthers
Ghost Food

If, like this Norman Records™ tiddlywink, you just need a bit of good old garage-punk in your life from time to time, then you should look no further than this new EP from Tijuana Panthers. The Californian trio serve up a half-dozen morsels of impish, lovable scuzz-rock on Ghost Food. From time to time things get a little surfy, too. Jay Reatard’s an obvious influence, as is early Wavves.

KÖHN
KÖHN 1

A double-vinyl re-issue of the 1998 debut album from Belgian producer Jurgen de Blonde under the name of KÖHN. It’s a timely decision to make this available again, particularly when such music is fashionable in 2019, as KÖHN 1 is constructed from strange percussive sounds that have nothing to do with traditional drums, and a complete lack of reverb/delay effects.

Lord Echo
Curiosities

Lord Echo is the alter ego of brilliantly named New Zealand producer Mike Fabs, a multi-instrumentalist known for blending 60's inspired songwriting with modern day dancefloor production. Curiosities was his second album from 2013 and combines myriad influences such as dub, funk and afro beat in a soulful, eclectic collection that aimed Fabs music purely towards the clubs in contrast to his earlier more laid back work. First time on 2LP vinyl for all you audiophiles out there.

Melting Gravity

Portland area soundscaper Daniel Menche follows up his triple disc Sleeper sprawl with further explorations into the world of ambience. Vanessa Wagner
Inland Versions

Pianist Vanessa Wagner’s recent [Inland] LP spawns a half-dozen remixes, collected together on the new InFiné release Inland Versions. By and large these versions retain the spirit of the originals - entries from artists like Nadia Struiwigh, Suzanne Ciani and GAS are all, to varying degrees, ambient and pretty. However, the Inland Versions rulebook is torn up on its last track, a monolithic deconstructed club reworking of ‘Struggle For Pleasure’ by Huema Utku.

Led Bib
It’s Morning

It’s Morning is the ninth studio album from British ensemble Led Bib, former Mercury Prize nominees and basically uncategorisable for the entirety of their 15-year career. The most obvious change this time around is that the music now boasts two vocalists - Wang Chung’s Jack Hues being one of them! - but the core ethos of the group remains.

Those Pretty Wrongs
Zed For Zulu

Watch out! Legend at work. Those Pretty Things are a power-pop duo consisting of Luther Russell (formerly of the Freewheelers) but most notably Jody Stephens of Big Star fame.  After a decent response to their self titled debut, the band are back in Ardent studio with a new set of songs which see the seemingly ageless Stephens co-writing and singing on all tracks. For fans of Big Star dare we suggest?

Prince
The Versace Experience: Prelude 2 Gold

First time on vinyl for the album Prince made to be given to attendees of Versace's collection at Paris Fashion Week 1995. Back then it was a tape only release which over the years has changed hands for eye watering amounts but wait long enough and everything becomes available eventually and so now even us mere mortals can hear the rare and remixed tracks it touted.

Eleventeen Eston
Delta Horizon

Eleventeen is a number Homer Simpson can count up to. Eleventeen Eston is the project of Austrailian DJ, producer and musician, John William Tanner. Delta Horizon is his infamous album which was released on cassette only in 2014 on L.A's esteemed Not Not Fun label. There were only 100 copies of that cassette, but apparently everybody who got a copy was very cool. Musically it gives Todd Rundgren a run for his money. Now it is being remastered for, and pressed on vinyl so you can join the cool kids gang.

BJ The Chicago Kid
1123

BJ The Chicago Kid drops his latest LP of widescreen hip-hop. 1123 is very much a post-To Pimp A Butterfly album, but it’s also a post-Stankonia album, a post-Channel Orange album and a post-Acid Rap album. That is to say there’s a lot going on here, with neo-soul and trap beats sitting side by side. 1123 boasts a pretty varied guestlist too - Rick Ross and Offset rub shoulders with J.I.D., Afrojack and Anderson .Paak.

The League Of Gentlemen
Series Two - You're My Wife Now

Just like in the olden days when you could buy records of Mind Your Language or some such you can now buy a vinyl edition of the 'hilarious' second series of cult comedy/horror The League of Gentleman. Coming on clear vinyl and with artwork by horror legend Graham Humphreys, you *should* get the same effect as watching the DVD with your eyes closed and a small fire crackling in the background. Anyway we don't know why they want to get involved in the music industry  - it's a shit business.

The League Of Gentlemen
Series Three - Do You Want A Bag With That

Another triple vinyl edition on clear vinyl of slightly disturbing comedy series The League of Gentleman. This is series three in which the sketch show format of earlier series was replaced with a focus on a different character per episode. How an audio only version of such a visual show will work is anybody's guess but your imagination/knowledge of the show should come in handy. Possibly don't play after dark when you are alone in a big old house.

Sui Zhen
Losing, Linda

Freezing Cold
Glimmer

Ooph. You might think Freezing Cold's music was an icy blast of electronica or murky post-rock but these Baltimore residents concoct a '90s fixated sound which has earned them comparisons to the melodic likes of the Lemonheads and Throwing Muses. Throw in some shoegaze and grungy textures and it's the perfect thing to listen to while wearing one of those long grungy jumpers people wore in the '90s. Maybe the name makes sense after all.

G.A.M.S.
G.A.M.S.

The self-titled debut album from G.A.M.S., a new group formed by Andi Stecher and Guido Mobius, is pretty much an exploration in pure feedback. Often painful to listen to but sometimes extraordinarily pretty and powerful, Mobius unleashes volleys of noise while Stecher powers through with primal percussion on G.A.M.S., one of the most challenging but rewarding releases of the year.

The Go! Team
Thunder, Lightning, Strike

The Go Team's 2004 debut arrived like a hurricane with insanely catchy tunes mixing indie-pop, soul, funk and hip-hop into a life affirming sonic stew. Now 15 years later it gets the re-issue treatment and unsurprisingly it sounds just as fresh today as when it first burst out of the traps. For the uninitiated, think a more indie-pop fixated the Avalanches. Fun all the way.

J Mascis
Elastic Days

J Mascis writes a new album, a new album writes J Mascis. Elastic Days is his third solo studio LP away from the daily grind of being in Dinosaur Jr. As with previous albums Several Shades Of Why and Tied To A Star, this one finds The World's Slacker Dad focussing on the acoustic side of life. There’s a bit of a Woods vibe to numbers like ‘See You At The Movies’.

Temples
Hot Motion

Incredibly 60s looking band in continue to make 60s influenced music shocker. Temples have been around for a good few years and with Hot Motion look set to make the so called 'big time'. Gender Roles
PRANG

Gender Roles are a group from Brighton with colourful hair who blend pop-punk and post-hardcore. This is a set of traits that sets them squarely in the middle of ‘Bands That Big Scary Monsters Should Sign’ venn-diagram. BSM have done just that, snapping up the trio for the release of their debut LP PRANG. Some of it’s quiet, some of it’s loud. Some of it sounds like Blakfish, some of it sounds like early Biffy Clyro.

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band
Clear Spot

Don Van Vliet’s reputation mostly rests on the mind-bending knottiness of Troutmaskreplica and similar work, but he could also dial down the weird and dial up the blues. 1972’s Clear Spot is his most successful attempt to nail a compromise between groove-driven blues rock and his inimitable creative eccentricities. There’s the title track’s swamp eco-blues, the Stax soul of Too Much Time, the acid rock rush of Sun Zoom Spark, and a couple of delicate psychedelic love songs. Still plenty of surreal tomfoolery afoot, like Zoot Horn Rollo’s slide showpiece Big-Eyed Beans from Venus, and those Little Golden Birdies - look at them! A good entry point into the Beefheart universe on 180g vinyl.

Gong
Angels Egg

Gong’s Angel’s Egg, the second part in their Radio Gnome Invisible series, was a groundbreaking development. The album is jam-packed with weirdly jazzy progressive rock compositions that are truly all over the place, driven by manic horns and reeds, like a succession to Estradasphere’s Buck Fever. Great stuff if you're into it, and finally back out on vinyl!

Buke and Gase
Riposte

The precocious duo Buke & Gase dropped their debut LP Riposte almost a decade ago now, so the time feels right for a reissue of the 2010 record. This pair emerged from the same New York scene that birthed Animal Collective and Dirty Projectors, and the influence of both groups can be felt on this record of zany, hyperactive and experimental indie-rock. tUnE-yArDs, Gang Gang Dance and Shellac are all bundled up in the Riposte sound as well.

The Kills
The Kills Live At Third Man Records

The Kills are the duo of Jamie Hince (ex Blyth Power, Scarfo and ex Mr Kate Moss) and Alison Mosshart (ex Discount) and together they have been producing music a little bit like the White Stripes but not as good for some time. So it was no surprise when Jack White Stripe himself invited them to his Third Man live space and recording studio to record their blistering live set direct to acetate. Here is the vinyl for all your garage rock needs.

The Districts
The Districts

Pennsylvania indie rock four-piece The Districts are now three albums into their career. Skip back five years and you’ll find their eponymous debut EP for Fat Possum. Here it is reissued with an additional track, Silver Couplets, a BBC session version of a live fave from their debut album, Telephone.

IT
Viaje: Musica Electronica Libre

Real wild shit from back in the day. IT were a duo with a whole array of instruments and electroacoustics at their disposal, and Viaje finds them letting loose in a flurry of multi-layered wild sounds. It seems as though some alien logic is dictating the progress of the music / soundscape: it may not make sense to us, but there is some kind of sense there. Brilliant stuff, reissued from obscurity by Survival Research.

Jackie Shane
Any Other Way

A pioneering figure who is thoroughly deserving of the retrospective interest in her career, Any Other Way is the first collection of Jackie Shane’s work approved by the artist herself. Though at the time her work barely got beyond the clubs of Toronto, Shane’s strong voice and stronger presence as a transgender woman in 1960’s North America has seen her influence spread far over the years. This LP brings together live recordings and her run of 45s, all of which demonstrate her unique command of soul, funk and r&b. Includes three previously unreleased tracks.

Gong
Flying Teapot

If you looked at this album and though "this has got to be prog", you're right. I checked. Flying Teapot (named for a Bertrand Russell thought experiment because of course) is Gong's third album and the first in their classic trilogy (because of course) of albums released between 1973 and 1974. If you like your rock music gleefully cosmic and elatingly psychedelic, take a flight.

Velvet Negroni
NEON BROWN

When people are asked to name musicians from Minneapolis they tend to get stuck pretty much as soon as they say Prince. Perhaps the rapidly-rising Velvet Negroni will be able to help add to that list in the near future. NEON BROWN, the debut LP from the one born Jeremy Nutzman (what a name), contains a sort of hybrid hip-hop/r ‘n’ b style that the likes of Frank Ocean and The Weeknd have struck gold with in recent years. And yes, Velvet Negroni does sound a bit like Prince at times as well.

John Murphy
Les Misérables (Original Series Soundtrack)

Did you watch that BBC 'Les Miserables' series? Well if you did you'll know that it didn't use the music from the acclaimed musical version of this classic novel but instead there was a score from John Murphy (‘Sunshine’, ‘28 Weeks Later’, ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ composer and not the guy from Shoes).

Various
Beautiful Freaks - Waving Our Flag High, Wave On, Wave On: Music From The Original Counter Culture

Though it might evoke images of crusties and hippies, Beautiful Freaks is an excellently compiled collection providing a snapshot into the first proper counter-cultural wave in mainstream society. This double-LP set from Tad Records includes cuts from the Grateful Dead, Brigitte Fontaine, Hawkwind and the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.

A-Sun Amissa
For Burdened and Bright Light

Richard Knox’s A-Sun Amissa drop their fifth LP through a mixture of Consouling Sounds and Manchester drone merchants Gizeh. For Burdened And Bright Light is a mournful and monolithic LP that combines that weight of Sunn O))) with the Gothic majesty of Prurient. The end result is like a more sonorous version of fellow Gizeh act Several Wives.

Daymé Arocena
Sonocardiogram

Daymé Arocena is a singer from Cuba. Her eponymous album lays down rumba rhythms which are then sprinkled with jazz. She is backed by a crack team of fellow Cuban musicians. She is influenced by legends of Cuban music such as La Lupe and Tito Puente. Recently she has collaborated with Dexter Story and Roberto Fonseca. Apparently, her live show is quite the thing to behold, so perhaps try and catch her in town sometime.

Eye Flys
Context

Here is one to blow away the cobwebs. Four musicians from bands such as Backslider and Full of Hell come together for a brand of vitriolic noise rock that has already drawn comparisons with such legendary rackateers such as the Melvins and Unsane. Get yourself strapped in for some ferocious riffing, pummelling drumming and vocals vomited out with ferocity as if singer Jake Smith is expecting the world to end any minute. Growly.
