Beck
Hyperspace

"No photos" he says whilst standing in front of a really cool car. But he should be photographed because he's Beck and he's about to unleash his fourteenth album. It features production help from the likes of Pharrell Williams, Greg Kurstin and Paul Epworth. The title track sounds rather gloriously chillwave (is that still a thing?) All kinds of editions for you to choose from.

Ben Frost
Dark: Cycle 2 (Original Music From The Netflix Series)

Ben Frost’s music has always had a cinematic quality to it, so it makes sense that recent years have seen the Aussie composer increasingly writing for the screen. He turns in a typically Frostian set for the OST of Netflix’s Dark: Cycle 2. These tracks are full of foreboding electronics, writhing drones and icy strings that have something of a Bernard Herrmann influence to them. It’s all very Black Mirror, which is to say it sounds quite like Geoff Barrow’s solo work.

Coil
Stolen & Contaminated Songs

Coil made so much good stuff when making their 1991 album Love’s Secret Domain, there were enough outtakes of sufficient quality to make another album. That album was 1992’s Stolen & Contaminated Songs. The album shows Coil’s ability to balance experimentation with tradition and give abstract ideas widescreen scope.

Gang Starr
One Of The Best Yet

Classic Brooklyn hip-hop duo Gang Starr disbanded in 2003. It seemed that there would be no more. In 2010, one half of the duo, Guru, tragically died seemingly ending any hope once and for all. His partner in rhyme over the years, DJ Premier, never gave up hope that there would be another Gang Starr album. 16 years after their last album, The Ownerz, we have a new album. One Of The Best Yet lets us know from the off that it’s up there with classics such as Step Into The Area. Features a guest appearance from J.Cole.

IDLES
A Beautiful Thing: IDLES Live at Le Bataclan

Recorded at the end of a massive, celebratory world tour in December 2018 at Paris’ prestigious Le Bataclan, IDLES tore through a cathartic set of highlights from their career so far, including covers on top of tracks from their two beloved albums Brutalism and Joy As an Act of Resistance. That set is captured on new live album A Beautiful Thing - available on 2xCD or limited edition clear multi-coloured vinyl (orange, pink or lime green).

Jim O'Rourke
To Magnetize Money And Catch A Roving Eye

What is he up to now? Sonic explorer and wearer of experimental music's best set of cardigans Jim O'Rourke. An internet search reveals absolutely no information about this other than it is a four CD set containing four hours of unreleased work. Essential for all fans of his more out there work it showcases what he's been up to in his lair between the years of 2017 and 2018.

John Coltrane Quartet
Africa / Brass

Africa / Brass was credited to The John Coltrane Quartet but there were more players involved in this 1961 masterpiece. It was Arranged by Eric Dolphy, whose exquisite touch recalled masters such as Duke Ellington, Gil Evans and, in place, Charles Mingus. Backing Coltrane were McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. Freddie Hubbard, Booker Little and Art Davis were among the substantial cast that made this album work.

John Frusciante
Curtains

John Frusciante enjoyed two stints as guitarist in Red Hot Chili Peppers from 1988-1992 and 1998-2009. Frusciante’s solo albums have a bit of a cult following and there’s quite a lot of them too, 14 in fact. Curtains was his eighth album, originally released in 2005. It features guest spots from Autolux drummer, Carla Azar, upright bassist Ken Wild and regular collaborator, Mars Volta and At The Drive-In guitarist, Omar Rodrigues-Lopez.

Joséphine Michel & Mika Vainio
The Heat Equation

Joséphine Michel and Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic) teamed up on 2015’s 'Halfway To White', a release that combined Vainio’s music with a hardback book of Michel’s photographs. 'The Heat Equation' follows a similar formula, linking 69 photos of Michel’s with a CD of the late Vainio’s final UK show, a 2016 concert given in Ramsgate at the Contra Pop festival. The brutal, bracing noise Vainio made that night dovetails neatly with Michel’s multi-faceted images. Also included here is an introductory essay from Jeremy Millar and a postcard insert of Michel’s portrait of Vainio.

Kamaal Williams
DJ-Kicks

The 70th edition of the insightful DJ-Kicks series, that’s been platformed by the !K7 label and will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next year, has been assembled by British musician and producer Kamaal Williams. Available on CD and vinyl, it combines his love of Seventies jazz fusion with contemporary UK-based dance music in all its diversity, and includes some new compositions as well!

Música Esporádica
Música Esporádica

Música Esporádica was the result of a get-together of Orquesta De Las Nubes with Glen Velez, Layne Redmond and Miguel Herrero back in 1985. Just a single session lasting 12 hours was enough to produce this amazing four-track album, now available once again on vinyl courtesy of Music From Memory.

Nurse With Wound
Trippin’ Musik

Steven Stapleton’s iconoclastic Nurse With Wound project now enters its fifth decade, marked with this lavish box set of all-new music titled Trippin’ Musik. Consisting of three vinyls in dayglo orange, yellow and green, the collection comes with no tracklisting and no indication of what order in which the listener ought to listen to it - it’s up to the individual!

RAMZi
Multiquest Niveau 1: Camouflé

Canadian electronic artist and producer RAMZi AKA, Phoebé Guillemot, takes her influences from the people she works with and the likes of Alice Coltrane, Don Cherry and Jon Hassell. She uses her music as a weapon against people who are trying to spoil the natural world, and specifically in the case of her new album, Multiquest, prevent everybody falling into the same trap set by unscrupulous leaders.

The Flaming Lips
The Soft Bulletin - Live At Red Rocks

The Soft Bulletin was a landmark album in the history of The Flaming Lips and to many it was a landmark album in the history of music. In 2016 they performed the album live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado with the backing of a large orchestra and choir. The result was spellbinding. 20 years on from the album’s original release, The Soft Bulletin - Live At Red Rocks is now available for your delectation.

The Orielles
Disco Volador

Written and recorded in double-quick time to strike while the iron’s still hot following the success of last year’s debut Silver Dollar Moment, The Orielles return with their sophomore album. Inspired by their time on the road, Disco Volador benefits from the addition of a fourth member on keyboards and the drones and delays brought to the mix by producer Marta Salogni. It should be another triumph for a band who’ve marked themselves out as one of the country’s finest newcomers.

The Raconteurs
Broken Boy Soldiers

Looking somewhat like the Cardiacs on the sleeve are Jack White's the Raconteurs. This is the project that he collaborated on songwriting with power pop mainstay Brendan Benson. The duo met up initially to just write one song but kept on at it and a full band formed just like that. This re-issue comes with a copper embossed gatefold jacket you lucky, lucky people.

Throbbing Gristle
A Souvenir Of Camber Sands

Turner Prize-nominated artists Jake and Dinos Chapman were asked to curate the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival at Camber Sands in 2004. If you were curating a festival and you heard that industrial experimentalists Throbbing Gristle had reformed, why wouldn’t you invite them to play? A Souvenir Of Camber Sands is a recording of their show from the festival.

Two Throbbing Gristle reissues in one package. Bundled together here are the band’s 2004 album, TG Now, their first since 1986, and their 2007 album Part Two: The Endless Not. The latter took the form of their classic 1978 album D.o.A: The Third and Final Report of Throbbing Gristle, with four of the tracks being recorded separately by each member of the band.

Various
A Short Illness From Which He Never Recovered

A Short Illness From Which He Never Recovered is a new, vinyl-only compilation from Blackest Ever Black. It features songs by the likes of Carla Del Forno, Bridget Hayden, Ian Martin, The Fulmars and Bobby Wratten's (of The Field Mice) latest project Lightning In A Twilight Hour that are unavailable elsewhere. Seems like a good enough reason to ‘add to cart’ to me.

Venetian Snares
Greg Hates Car Culture (20th Anniversary Edition)

Breakcore pioneer Aaron Funk, better known as Venetian Snares, has been known for his irreverent take on all manner of dance music sub-genres for over two decades. His 1999 12” EP Greg Hates Car Culture was his first official release, which now gets a 20th anniversary re-issue on CD and double-vinyl, complete with three previously unreleased tracks dating from 1997.
