Heema / Shiva Dance

AMRA is a new collaborative project between Emptyset’s Paul Purgas and artist/musician Imran Perretta. Trawling through archives of sound from South Asia for inspiration, this hand-stamped 10” white label single produces two tracks, ‘Heema’ and ‘Shiva Dance’, which explore notions of ancestry and futurology.

Free Love
Extreme Dance Anthems

Free Love (the artists formerly known as Happy Meals) recorded their latest mini album in a studio that sits half way between a church and a sex club. This setting seems to suit their music which has the joyous togetherness seen in a church and all the throbbing and thrusting of your local sex club. Like a lot of groups this year, they made the record primarily to entertain themselves and other people in an attempt to escape the misery of the political world for a few minutes at least.

Sonne und Wasser

Sonne und Wasser is the new album by Japanese minimalist composer H. Takahashi. His aim was to mimic the growth of a plant with music. The four tracks on the album all grow, slowly, from the first, with similar tone and chord progressions. He takes his inspiration from minimalist and ambient masters such as Hiroshi Yoshimura and Satoshi Ashikawa, Erik Satie, John Cage, Brian Eno and Roedelius. Sonne und Wasser is the follow-up to 2017’s Raum.

Must I Evolve

Jav Is...um... is none other than Jarvis Cocker once spindly frontman of Pulp and this is the first track from his new band he has called Jarv Is. Make sense? Sorta. So this was out previously in limited numbers but with it being by Jarv Is (Cocker) there has been much demand so it has been re-pressed and now features an Unloved (David Holmes and pals) remix over on the flip.

Endorphins is the latest mixtape, and second full-length release, from rapper Octavian. Octavian is part-Angolan, part-French and part-British. He has been impressing people all over the place and won the BBC Sound Of 2019 award. Endorphins includes contributions from Theophilus London, A$AP Ferg, Jessie Ware, Smokepurpp and Skepta, among others.

Operating Theatre
Miss Mauger

Dublin's All City imprint have long been scouring the back alleys of Irish jazz, electronica and post-punk to find hidden gems, the latest of which is by 1980s era synth-pop act Operating Theatre. The group were short lived  - eventually signing to U2's Mother label but soon imploding. They created a fascinating take on the new wave sound of the day somewhere between pop and electronica. Singer Olwen Fouéré went on to become a Hollywood actress you know?

Oratorio For The Underworld

The worlds of sound design and classical composition come together on Oratorio For The Underworld, the new album by PYUR AKA Sophie Schnell. It is her first recording for Subtext. On the album she transports the listener to a mystical and ethereal space. Cellist Teresa Alvarez and violinist Juan Zalba Fuentes help with the textures within.

The Clash
London Calling (40th Anniversary)

Wow. Forty years since the Clash unleashed their third album London Calling. Iconic not just because of the more varied music contained within and it's legendary title track but just look at that sleeve will you? They haven't gone completely to town with this just a relatively standard LP (admittedly in special sleeve) and CD reissue plus a CD box set they've called London Calling: The Scrapbook which contains a hardback book full of memorabilia, archive material and lyrics.

All the tracks come from obscure one-off 7” singles, in some cases by artists who are better known for working in different genres. They range from the relatively normal sounds of orchestral disco to the more unhinged and experimental electronic sounds.
