A Middle Sex
Soul Sways West

Originally released on The Audacious Art Experiment we are delighted to issue a long-awaited vinyl edition of this posthumous album by Manchester dub/noise/improv collective A Middle Sex. Exploratory electronic repeato music that harks back to the golden age experiments of This Heat and Throbbing Gristle. Dark but essential.

A Mote Of Dust
II

Stargazer Records (We Were Strangers, Caspian Sea Monster) drop the second LP from A Mote Of Dust, a solo project of Craig Beaton. Beaton previously played in post-grunge groups Ganger and Aereogramme, but the stuff he makes as A Mote Of Dust sees him indulging his quiet side. II is a collection of spare ballads and chamber-pop arrangements that recalls Mark Kozelek and Fink.

Ada Lea
What We Say In Private

Musician and artist, Ada Lea, hails from Quebec, Canada. She seems just as at home with a double bass as she does with an electric guitar. Her inspiration comes from a number of sources - artists such a Frida Kahlo and Eva Hesse, the writing of Sylvia Plath, folk/blues troubadour Karen Dalton and all-round genius Nina Simone. What We Say In Private was borne out of a sleepless, yet productive, period of time following a break-up.

Airto
Samba De Flora

Airto is one of the most revered Brazilian percussionists having worked with everyone up to and including Miles Davis. Samba De Flora is his 1988 album that fuses Brazilian samba and bossa nova with jazz. Despite being incredibly well regarded it had been out of print until Soul Jazz Records intervened.

Aïsha Devi
S.L.F.

Aïsha Devi’s new release. It got out. The Swiss-born composer of rave-ambiance twistypop returns with a twelve described by the label as “an illuminating hijacking of collective consciousness”. What does that mean, you ask? It means tropes of trap, club, computer boffinry, haze-pop and cyberculture together in a lift.

Akatombo
Trace Elements

Originally released in 2003, this is the atmospheric debut of Akatombo - one Paul Kirk, a Scot based in Japan. His sonic landscapes tell of the bustle, infrastructure and human warmth of Hiroshima, often haunted by wafts of pulsing beats, sub bass and angsty guitars. More than a decade on, it still sounds like very little else.

Akira Ishikawa
Back To Rhythm

Japanese funk drummer Akira Ishikawa dropped his most famous effort back in 1975. It wouldn’t be on our website if it didn’t have that special flair that makes certain records so attractive to collectors: high energy, a unique approach, and near-total obscurity. Back to Rhythm was pretty much impossible to find until this Mr Bongo reissue.

ALASKALASKA
The Dots

Marathon Artists (Pond, Courtney Barnett) front the debut LP from ALASKALASKA here. The Dots is a peppy first salvo from the group, a record of perky leftfield electro-pop numbers that nods to Fever Ray, Fujiya & Miyagi and fellow south Londoners Hot Chip. Best to get a copy of The Dots and learn the words so you can be in the know come festival season.

Alessandro Adriani
Morphic Dreams

Alessandro Adriani sure does keep busy. As well as running the excellent Mannequin Records, Adriani also cranks out wedges of prime industrial electronics at an impressive clip. His sophomore LP Morphic Dreams finds Adriani back on Stroboscopic Artefacts (Efdemin, L.B. Dub Corp) and running his usual gauntlet of electro, minimal wave, industrial techno and Gothic post-punk.

All Your Sisters
Trust Ruins

Jordan Morrison has been through it. Over the past few years he’s experienced deaths of both family and friends, got engaged and had his brain fried from working as a paramedic. That’s a lot to process, and he does that through the monolithic industrial post-punk of his All Your Sisters project. Trust Ruins, the third All Your Sisters LP, is a white-knuckle ride through Gothic EBM and synth-punk that’s made all the more overwhelming for Morrison’s pained, caustic vocals. Think The Soft Moon and Nitzer Ebb.

Ambien Baby
En Transito

Ambien Baby, named after the US sleeping pill and...er….a baby, are a collaboration between two Vancouver-based producers, D Tiffany AKA Sophie Sweetland and NAP. El Transisto is a compilation album charting the progression of the dance duo from their inception in 2015 to 2019. Their mini LP come via RAMZi's label FATi Records.

Amnon Raviv
Mirror

An experimental record from Israel that’s become something of a Holy Grail for collectors, Mirror by sound artist Amnon Raviv was restricted to just 50 handmade copies when released back in 1983. This wider re-issue of 500 numbered vinyl copies will expand that circle of very lucky individuals!

Amon Amarth
Berserker

Amon Amarth are a Viking Metal band who are absolutely preciscely as metal as their name and album artwork would suggest. Berserker is the group’s eleventh album to date, and it combines proper heavy credentials with a big dose of melodic power so that any listener can get involved. Released by the Metal Blade label.

Andrew Hung
Realisationship Instrumentals

I’m guessing that the cover this album is what Aladdin Sane-era David Bowie would look like if he was really tired and just couldn't be bothered. Anyway, this is the instrumental version of Andrew Hung’s Relationship album called….wait for it….Relationship Instrumentals. As Fuck Buttons are the kind of thing that go down well in these parts, I’m sure this will too. On Lex.

Angelo Badalamenti
Blue Velvet (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The soundtrack to David Lynch’s 1986 movie ‘Blue Velvet’ perfectly suits the edgy film noir feel of the now classic film. It mixes original compositions from long term Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti with the sort of originals that would suit the jukebox of any any shadowy dive bar.

Archive
25

Archive have been going for a quarter of a century now, so we reckon they’ve earned the right to a retrospective release. 25 is a mammoth piece - even the smallest double-disc edition includes more than two-dozen tracks, and the box set almost doubles that tally and also comes a beautiful book. All editions feature new material including a collaboration with Band Of Skulls, and the 7” that comes in the box set sees Archive teaming up with The Beta Band’s Steve Mason. If you ever want to mark a milestone in your life, something like 25 would be the way to do it.

Aries
Juramento Mantarraya

Isabel Fernández Reviriego - the former singer of Charades - comes through with her latest LP as Aries. Juramento Mantarraya is a delightful record that kaleidoscopes a multitude of styles into a bright and shiny electro-indie sound. This album bursts at the seams with ideas, and Reviriego is a charismatic ball of positivity up front. Dirty Projectors would be pleased to have made Juramento Mantarraya.

Arlo Day
Bad Timing

Then I look at you, and the world's alright with me. Just one look at you, and I know it's gonna be *deep breath* an Arlo Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaay (Arlo Day, Arlo Day, Arlo Day, Arlo Day…) Day’s debut (more like DAY-but, eh ladies and gentlemen?) EP contains none of the positive vibes of the old William Withers’ tune. Bad Timing is, in fact, a set of regret-filled bedroom indie in the vein of King Krule and Angel Olsen. Sorry for misleading you. It’s good, though!

audiobooks
Friends In The Bubble Bath Remixes

Everyone is a fan of audiobooks except us at Norman Records. And maybe that's not fair on the others who work here  - it probably just comes down to me not liking them. I tell you who does like them though, Welsh songstress Gwenno, and the guy from Factory Floor both of which are really happy to provide remixes. (David) Wrench does a mix too but he's already in the band so doesn't count.

BABii
HiiDE

Described as sounding like literally everything all the way from Grimes to fka Twigs this is the debut album from producer BABii (pronounced...um... Biffy Clyro
Balance Not Symmetry (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Grief is the central theme to Jamie Adams’ film, Balance Not Symmetry. Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil found a connection with the director and the film’s theme. This led to a certain amount of introspection in the emotionally charged soundtrack. The Scottish alt-rockers also find time for their usual stadium-ready anthems and a little experimentation.

At a time where neoliberalism is trying to take everything from us, it should be no surprise that even the simple platitudes of a self-care twitter bot can be comforting to some. On You'll Always Stay Beautiful producer Broshuda points to the absurdity of this by using text-to-speech to make those bots vocalists. Carson McHone is, obviously, an alt-country artist. Her new album Carousel is an eleven track set of good stuff, with a bit of modern (sixties) influences in there along with the honk and the tonk. Causa Sui
Summer Sessions Vol. 1

Vinyl re-issue of the Summer Sessions series by Danish instrumental psych- / stoner-rock band Causa Sui, originally released between 2008 and 2009 and with the aid of saxophonist Johan Riedelow, which defined the group’s sound. Highlights from Vol. 1 include the massive 24-minute ‘Visions of Summer’ that takes up the entire first side!

Chain Wallet
No Ritual

Chain Wallet recorded their new album No Ritual in a beach cabin in Norway: does this mean we can hear some surf guitar influences amidst the fuzz here? Quite possibly. No Ritual also features the vocals of shoegazer Chiara Cavallari, adding a lush extra element to the Chain Wallet sound. On Jansen.

Charlemagne Palestine & Rrose
The Goldennn Meeenn + Sheeenn

The multiple letter way of spelling is irritating but it's one of the few derogatory things you can say about Charlemagne Palestine. Here he collaborates with Rrose (he's at it too) for a rendition of Palestine's classic 1976 era work The Golden Mean as performed at the Festival Variations in Nantes in March 2018. Expect even more notes than letters.

Charles Ditto
In Human Terms

In Human Tems is the 1988 debut album of Charles Ditto, a fellow with a fine collection of midi-synths and the melodic and experimental instincts to put them to great use. The sounds (lots of Rolands) are distinctly of their time, but that doesn’t stand in the way of one's enjoyment of the odd-pop structures that Ditto puts them into. Reissued by Telephone Explosion.

Charlie Cunningham
Permanent Way

London-based singer/songwriter Charlie Cunningham follows his 2017 debut LP, Lines, with new album, Permanent Way. He is keen to show that second album syndrome is nothing but a myth, and that there’s more to him than just being a singer/songwriter. He builds on the sparseness of his debut with lush piano, synths and brass backing his guitar and voice. On Infectious Music.

Chasman
Synth-E-Fuge

Synth-e-fuge by Chasman has the kind of cover that makes you want to drop everything and go listen to it. If you need more persuading, however, then it's got some great synths, a charmingly lo-fi feel, and is more 80s than Duran Duran in over-sized blazers eating a communal Vienetta. For fans of Duran Duran, Wham!, and The Human League.

Collocutor
Instead

Collocutor’s 2014 LP Instead was the first thing to be released by On The Corner Records. It is the album that set the tone for a label whose impressive roster now includes artists like Dengue Dengue Dengue and DJ Khalab. Furthermore, you can make the case that Instead is one of the LPs which helped kick-start the London nu-jazz scene that has produced Moses Boyd, Joe Armon-Jones et al. Led by saxophonist/flautist Tamar Osborn, Collocutor’s sound is a rhythm-heavy mix of various jazz colours - free, spiritual, bop, astral and soul all get a look-in here.

Comfort
Not Passing

First physically available album from Glasgow-based brother/sister duo Comfort. By turns ugly and beautiful, calm and angry, vulnerable yet powerful, Not Passing reflects its themes of social alienation and outsider-dom in its music that’s maximalist in delivery but minimalist in construction.

Company Of State
Company Of State

In the 1980s Belgium was quite the hotbed for the sort of new wave that was so inspired by the likes of Joy Division. Part of this scene were Company Of State who take the template created in Manchester and make it darker and more brittle. This self-titled EP was their first release, and shows the band to be just as capable of capturing melancholy as any of their peers.
