Gulag Orkestar

Teenage Albuquerque kid Zach Condon came marching out of nowhere with this debut as Beirut which sounds less like a precocious teen and more like a million piece Balkan orchestra. He was aided and abetted by Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw) who played a variety of instruments which made Condon's songs sound something like Stephin Merritt backed by a drunken raggle-taggle folk collective.

Live At The BBC

25 years ago Blur apparently lived at the BBC. Sorry, no, Blur played a live session for BBC Radio 1. This was, of course, around the time of their very famous third album, Parklife, which included the hit I Am The Fly by Wire, Sorry again! I mean Girls & Boys. Girls and Boys is one of the four tracks on this Blur Live At The BBC EP along with Jubilee, Trouble In The Message Centre and Lot 105.

Echo & The Bunnymen
The John Peel Sessions 1979-1983

One of Britain’s most august indie institutions, Echo & The Bunnymen present an archival dig for all of the sessions they recorded for the legendary John Peel during their formative years from 1979 to 1983. Many of the 21 songs - presented over two LPs / one CD - do not appear on their early albums, as the band actually used the sessions to experiment with new material.

Girl Band
Going Norway

Girl Band broke their 4 year hiatus with noisy single, 'Shoulderblades'. Now we have it’s follow-up, 'Going Norway'. Like its predecessor it is noisy and it is taken from the Irish band’s second album, 'The Talkies', which the follow-up to 2015’s 'Holding Hands With Jamie'. Girl Band remain one of the most thrillingly abrasive bands around.

Iggy Pop

Living legend Iggy Pop has been dogged by insecurity all his life. The process of making and touring his last album, 2016’s Post Pop Depression, helped him with this. He wanted to feel free, so he allowed that feeling to take over, and Free, his 19th solo album, developed from there. It is different in tone to its predecessor, finding Iggy in a pensive and solemn mood.

Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein
Stranger Things 3 (Original Score from the Netflix Original Series)

How much stranger can these things get? Season 3 of the 80s nostalgia fest that is 'Stranger Things' sees its cast of charming kids face their most terrifying enemy yet, the mall. Score provided of course by Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein who are responsible for the current deluge of new-wave synth music terrorising the world.

If you’re a big M83 (aka Anthony Gonzalez)  fan, as I’m sure lots of you are, you’ll be aware of his 2007 album, Digital Shades Vol. 1, which contained some Eno influenced ambient outtakes that couldn't find a place on any of his albums. 12 years have passed and M83 has amassed  enough material for a second helping, DSVII. This time there’s an ‘80s sci-fi element to the music. Eno is still clearly an influence but there’s evidence he’s been listening to Mort Garson, John Carpenter and Suzanne Ciani, too.

Odd Nosdam
Flippies Best Tape

Now, it gets a loving double-LP re-issue.

The Pop Group

Y by The Pop Group was their debut album, originally released in 1979. The post-punk band from Bristol were seen as pioneers of the genre. They mixed jazz, reggae and dub influences with punk to create something quite original. The band claim they were trying to mix Funkadelic with Captain Beefheart to see what happened.

Almost two decades on from Yoni Wolf’s first release, he continues to ask ‘Why?’. In the case of 'AOKOHIO' the answer seems to be something to do with an accompanying visual project and an LP broken up into short song-suites. Musically it’s another set of bombastic avant-rap from the singular Wolf. Once again the likes of Dirty Projectors and Of Montreal are your sonic touchstones for a Why? album.

Ode To Joy

Ode To Joy is the 11th album by Wilco. The title is taken from a 1785 poem by Friederich Schiller. Thematically, however,  it is concerned with something much more recent - the rather unsettling political climate and trying to find joy during this time. Wilco boss man, Jeff Tweedy, is hopeful that there is more love than hate out there, but is also aware that hate can be lurking just around the corner, so warns us that we’ve got to be careful.
