Animals As Leaders
Animals As Leaders

The debut album from Animals As Leaders back in 2009 was a triumph of progressive metal, crowned by its frontman Tosin Abasi's incredibly technical guitar work. 2019 has seen a tenth anniversary commemorative tour of North America, and Animals As Leaders is getting a CD and limited-edition vinyl re-issue.

Bat For Lashes
Lost Girls

Natasha Khan gets back to Bat For Lashes for the project’s fifth album, and it’s vintage-tinted synth-pop baby! Lost Girls positions itself as a soundtrack to an imaginary 80’s teen movie, and it certainly fits that bill, with all the tropes and details in just the right place. Lost Girls is released by Bat For Lashes Records.

Blanck Mass
Animated Violence Mild

Benjamin Power returns one more time as Blanck Mass with the enticingly titled Animated Violence Mild. Since making the switch from dense ambience to something more industrial after the Fuck Buttons man's solo debut, each subsequent record has gotten more noisy, more intense, and more catchy, all at the same time. Animated Violence Mild is no different, with Power reaching for sound as varied as black metal, hardcore, and europop.

Charles Mingus
The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady

Charles Mingus and company conjured magic on 20th January 1963. The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady is a composed piece spread over six parts, with occasional blasts of full-ensemble free improvisation. Still sounds mind-blowing all these years later - a true original at the intersection of jazz and folk.

Efterklang
Altid Sammen

Danish 4AD signees Efterklang are known for their pop experimentation, flirting with a range of genres including post-rock, indie pop, electronic music and art pop. On ‘Altid Sammen’, their first proper studio album in 7 years, they add baroque instrumentation to their rich musical tapestry. ‘Altid Sammen’ is a record which focuses on themes of togetherness, searching for meaning in nature, death, the afterlife, friendships and the bonds we create with others.

Girl Band
The Talkies

Taking their time over nearly four years since their debut album Holding Hands With Jamie, Irish quartet Girl Band deliver their long-awaited second effort. The Talkies was inspired by its recording in the uniquely weird building of Ballintubbert - full of winding passages and confusing turns amid the deafening noise.

Jay Som
Anak Ko

Jay Som is solely responsible for Anak Ko. She was songwriter and musician, producer and engineer. The result is a record that is indisputably hers. Though she proudly wears her influences on her sleeve (Cocteau Twins, the Cure etc...) there is no denying that she makes the realm of dream pop entirely her own.

Lingua Ignota
Caligula

The eagerly anticipated new album from Kristin Hayter under her Lingua Ignota moniker, following up her rapturously received self-released 2017 album All Bitches Die. A study of the abuses of power set to raw soundscapes influenced by industrial and ambient music, Caligula sees Hayter access the next level of artistry.

Pixies
Beneath The Eyrie

Now on their third studio album since their mid-Noughties reunion eventually led to some new music, Beneath The Eyrie sees the legendary Pixies continue to polish their impressive legacy. 12 new tracks, including single ‘On Graveyard Hill’. Kim Deal or no deal? If the you've stuck with them this long I reckon I can guess.

Special Request
Bedroom Tapes

Bedroom Tapes sees techno wizard Special Request throwing it back to old cuts recorded onto cassette that were unearthed recently when moving house. Mastered by Matt Colton, who has similarly lent his talents to artists like James Blake and Hot Chip, the tracks retain every trace of the original recordings onto tape, hiss and all. A time capsule, if you will, for one of electronic music’s most enigmatic and talented main players.

Suicide
Suicide

The 1977 debut by Alan Vega and Martin Rev is a conceptual and sonic assault. Vega’s pithy lyrics and echoed rockabilly vocals over Rev’s seething, primitive beatbox and fuzzed-up synths are a simple and devastatingly effective combination. Ghost Rider and Rocket USA is a killer double whammy to open the album. Frankie Teardrop makes your neck hair stand up, and Springsteen fave Cheree calms you down again.

Temples
Hot Motion

Incredibly 60s looking band in continue to make 60s influenced music shocker. Temples have been around for a good few years and with Hot Motion look set to make the so called 'big time'. The band they bring to mind is Kasabian but like, not in a bad way. Sunshine streams between the chords. On ATO Records.

Tinariwen
Amadjar

Malian group Tinariwen recorded their ninth studio album in the Mauritanian desert under a sea of stars during a recording session that lasted a little over two weeks. Nature’s influence shines through the recording, producing a record that showcases Tinariwen at their most authentic and comfortable.

Ty Segall
First Taste

Perhaps they should have got someone who knows about Ty Segall to write about 'First Taste', but no, it's me. Lead single 'Taste' sounds like what I think Segall sounds like, catchy fuzzy guitars accompanied by catchy fuzzy vocals. The album even features some dual drumming with Mr. Segall bashing away on one of the drums. Very enticing!

Whitney
Forever Turned Around

Whitney return with their new album, Forever Turned Around. It is the follow-up to their 2016 debut Light Upon The Lake. The Chicago duo play a brand of indie-fied soulful country. Forever Turned Around was produced by Bradley Cook and Jonathan Rado, who, with credits between them such as Hand Habits, Father John Misty, Weyes Blood and Hiss Golden Messenger, were able to add the perfect colours and textures.
