Jayson Wynters
Industrial Espionage

Four track techno EP from Birmingham's Jayson Wynters. Wynter's techno darts and weaves, it knows when to sprint and when to take a break. Industrial Sabotage is an apt name then, it breaks up the repetition and monotony in order to aim for something higher. Released on the lovely Don't Be Afraid.

Jealous Of The Birds
Wisdom Teeth

Jealous of the Birds returns after 2016’s Parma Violets. Naomi Hamilton’s new EP Wisdom Teeth finds the Northern Irish indie songwriter pondering such topics as a life in music and the reconciliation of inner and outer selves. She does so with dextrous, poetic lyrics and excellent, folky choruses, in which her voice takes off beautifully.

Jean Dupuy
All Of The Time

Recital Program (Ian William Craig, Loren Connors) release a collection of recordings of the works of sound artist Jean Dupuy. A performer/painter/general artiste who has been working since the late ‘60s, Dupuy’s sonic works have done time in centres as prestigious as NYC’s MoMA. All Of The Time spans a period of 1969-2017 and proves a fine demonstration of the explorative found sound/experimental concrete practices that have made Dupuy so respected in his field.

Like A Baby

Of course it's not his real name. Jerry Paper is the alter ego of LA based songwriter and multi instrumentalist Lucas Nathan. This is his first record for Stones Trow following on from previous records on smaller imprints. It's lo-fi soul pop was co-produced by Matty Tavares (BadBadNotGood) and guest stars Weyes Blood and Alex Brettin (Mild High Club).

Jo Passed

Oh God I hope not, I'd be devastated. Anyway this band has previously been pre-described as a 'fecked up Beatles' or XTC or Can or Neu. Joe Germlin
No Master Dynamics

Banana Oil/Gay Against You noisenik Joe Germlin drops an album of strange sort-of-hip-hop on Adaadat. Taking cues from the Scandi Frankengenre of Skwee, the funk/rap/chiptune-hybrids across No Master Dynamics make this an LP you can’t get comfortable with. This is a good thing - the 8-bit grooves ping-pong around with a carefree abandon which you can’t help but get swept up in.

John Coltrane
1963: New Directions

John Coltrane burned brilliantly brightly, if briefly; here are five of his best LPs. '1963: New Directions' brings together all of Coltrane's 1963 Impulse recordings, in the order in which they were laid down to tape. The year marked a transition point for Coltrane, he would go on to record 1964's 'Crescent' and 'A Love Supreme', of course. Available as a 5x LP box set and a 3x CD set and include artwork featuring original collages. On Impulse!

John Matthias & Jay Auborn
Pretoria Remixed

John Matthias (Derailer) joined forces with composer Jay Auborn to release Race To Zero through Village Green records in 2017, mixing modern classical with heavy electronic production. Here they bring Bristolian producer CUTS, Will Young’s (not that one) Moon Gangs project, and former Mogwai guitarist John Cummings in to remix the track Pretoria. Turning this cinematic piece in two very different interpretations.

Juan Atkins
Dimensions / Flash Flood

Life's Good is a new label about to bring us reissued classics from the golden age of Detroit / European Techno. Their inaugural release is this lush double-header from Juan Atkins: Dimensions / Flash Flood. Originally recorded in the early 1990s and issued on the famous "Panic In Detroit" compilation from 1992 under his M500 / Model 500 guise, "Dimensions" is a percolating, bleepy charmer now given its own side of loud-cut wax on this 12", freshly remastered by Rashad Becker.  Meanwhile on the flip, Flash Flood appears as a fresh twist on the original with acidic synth and ominously deep sub-bass.

Heavy, California / Cherry

Jungle gear up for the release of their sophomore LP For Ever with another light dusting of alt-soul. ‘Heavy, California’ and ‘Cherry’ are par for the course, all polite funk grooves and snapback-and-a-pair-of-Huaraches falsetto. Following on from unions with Paula Temple, Sean Carpio and Demian Licht we now have the fruits of his labour alongside Kamikaze Space Programme. ETXC004’s ‘Environment 1’ revolves around a lopsided techno locked groove, while ‘Environment 2’ is full of hissing synth drones.

Keith Mansfield / Alan Hawkshaw / David Snell
Big Business / Wind Of Change

This LP may have the names Alan Hawkshaw and David Snell on the spine, but the bulk of the work here is done by Keith Mansfield (he of the Grandstand theme fame). For this 1973 album now reissued by Be With Records, Mansfield crafts a series of pomp-and-circumstance instrumentals. Hawkshaw and Snell cameo with a piece apiece. Big Business/Winds Of Change is a good cop for all you library music fans out there.

Kellen 303
WHB EP

EP on Keysound Recordings from Brooklyn-based newcomer Kellen 303. Five tracks who draw from the frenetic dance traditions of footwork and vogue music, set against the dark aesthetic of goth and industrial. Any producer who can successfully work in the same space as Venus X is worth a spin or two.

Kev Brown
Minneapolis

Prolific producer Kev Brown turns his attention to the sounds of Minneapolis on his latest LP. The Minnesota city is best-known as the home of Prince, and Brown certainly injects a nice wedge of The Artist Formerly Known As's raunchy funk into these post-Dilla instrumentals. We challenge you to not shake your hips to these party-starting joints. This one's a Black Friday edish.

Kode9 & Burial
FABRICLIVE 100

Here endeth the lesson. The 100th and final edition of Fabric’s Fabriclive CD mix series comes courtesy of two artists who, perhaps above all others, have defined the sound of the London club since the turn of the millenium. Burial’s South London bleakscapes and Kode9’s Hyperdub label have spread their tentacles into nearly every facet of UK club music, and you’d be hard-pressed to argue that any of the other 99 Fabriclive mixes don’t bear their influence in one way or another. Now, as the series rounds out, the pair drop a 37-track mix that shows love to footwork, gqom, jungle, grime and everything in between. Not to be missed.

Konami Kukeiha Club
Gradius

The soundtrack to 80’s scrolling space-shooter classic Gradius, presented in both NES original and 1989 MSX versions. Listening to these hyperactive 8-bit synth melodies on vinyl, you can of course hear the whole thing clearly, without the endless bleeps of your lasers. Actually a remarkably strong listening experience. From Ship To Shore PhonoCo.

Kostis Kilymis
Second Saturation

A fresh new Tapeworm, plucked from the ground. And what does it contain? Why, two sides of exciting materials from Kostis Kilymis of course! The work presented here is grown out of a Stockholm live performance and some sweetly detailed field recordings, all treated and processed by various means, some of them pleasingly dubby. Second Saturation is a tape on The Tapeworm.

Krikor
Saudi

After an extremely limited cassette run on Low Jack’s Editions Gravats back in 2017, Krikor’s Saudi now gets a vinyl pressing courtesy of Long Island Electrical Systems (Svengalisghost, Simoncino). The sides of Saudi were originally made for a French TV documentary that focussed on the questionable dealings of the Saudi royal family, and Krikor makes sure to instil his music with plenty of murk and shade. Grainy ambiences evolve into eerie minimal synth numbers, Balearic beats bang a little too loud for comfort, and Krikor generally makes you sit up and pay attention.

Lay Llamas
Thuban

Rocket darlings Lay Llamas continue to travel the planets in search of the grooviest freaksters baby. Thuban is a little more grounded, finding earthly rhythms from all over to celebrate and experiment with, doing the usual psychedelic hypnosis with a spoken word feature from the Pop Group's Mark Stewart. Well this is really living, eh?

Le Officine Di Efesto (Donato Dozzy & Retina.it)
The Elements

Though their catalogue currently numbers under fifteen releases, Italy’s Spazio Disponibile are building a reputation as a voice to watch in European techno. They’ve scored another direct hit with The Elements, a five-track release from Le Officine Di Efesto (the collaborative project between Retina.it and label boss Donato Dozzy). The pair cover a lot of ground here, moving between slow and psychy DJ tools (‘Sulphur 16’), leftfield groove tracks (‘Plasma Hymn’) and far-out synth experimentation (‘Ode To Carbon’) with great control.

Lena Hessels
Billow

Lena Hessels is the daughter of Terrie Hessels, guitarist with Dutch anarcho-punk band The Ex. She was born in 2000, which makes her a youngster, but a youngster who knows bands such as Sonic Youth and Konono No.1 from the times they stayed at her parents house as she was growing up. She has also immersed herself in Ethiopia’s musical heritage. All-in-all, it makes her debut mini album, Billow, an interesting prospect. LP and CD on Terp.

Leon Vynehall
DJ-Kicks

Leon Vynehall has taken us on a bunch of journeys through his ambient house universe. Now the beneficent and mysterious life-force called !K7, responsible for the DJ Kicks series, has invited him to put together a mixtape. The man has risen to the occasion and focused on an interesting selection rather than smooth mix, accelerating from 79 to 169 BPM over the course of 26 tracks from the likes of Tomaga, Primitive, and AFX.

Léonie Pernet
Crave

Leonie Pernet, from Paris, has completed her debut full-length album and is now ready to send it out into the world. Crave features the vocal, piano and drumming talents of Pernet, also arranging the whole affair to her precise specifications. Crave is a dramatic and multi-faceted album, full of sleek beauty. Released by InFine.

Levon Vincent

Lord of wax Levon Vincent offers two buzzing cuts of who knows what. I would predict something deep and minimal, but these ones are being described as "razor-sharp", which could well mean we're in for something a little more confrontational, to suit him seemingly weaponising his vinyl with a swing of the arm on that front cover. Life In Sodom
The Stains / Alessandro Adriani Remix

As Mannequin Records closes in on 100 releases Alessandro Adriani’s label dips its toe into the reissues market. This one is a 1991 single from Goth-wave legends Life In Sodom. Both versions of ‘The Stains’ are gloriously vampiric combinations of darkwave, techno and industrial rock. The same applies to 1992 cut ‘Phantasmagoria’ which crops up on the B-side. Label boss Adriani provides a club edit of ‘The Stains’ to round the EP out.

LOR
Mystery To The Viewer EP

Warm drop this four-track EP from Northern Ireland’s Lunar Orbit Rendezvous aka LOR. Like fellow Belfast native Space Dimension Controller, LOR’s brand of techno has a nice cosmic tinge to it. However, on Mystery To The Viewer, the aesthetic is more calculated than the full-blown Detroit worship of SDC. Only on booming closer ‘White Light’ does LOR really let rip. Earlier in the EP the title track and ‘In This Detail’ combine minimal grooves with expressive synth pads, while ‘Oriole’ has a bit of an acid tang.

Loren Connors
Unaccompanied Acoustic Guitar Improvisations Vol. 10

Loren Connors has been a prolific maker and documenter of guitar music for many years now; across at least a hundred records spanning four decades in fact. Here is the latest volume -- the tenth! -- a continuation of his unaccompanied acoustic guitar improvisations; he made a series of 9 solo acoustic records under the name of Loren Mazzacane between 1979 and 1980. Los Campesinos
We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed

Ah, Los Campesinos!. Early birds of the 2000s NME heartbreak-tweecore indie scene, their success with university freshers up and down the country was all but sealed. 2008’s We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, albeit a subradar piece knocked out half a year after the previous album, contained many a fan hit of its own, especially the title track.

Low Sea
Portals

Ireland-based duo, Low Sea continue their goth/coldwave/synth-pop explorations on Portals, their third release. This time, their music is lightened at the edges and there are themes of winning and losing, loneliness and elation. Once again they have called in the the talents of American producer Stephen Hague to mix the album’s closing track. Hague has worked with all sorts of ‘80s acts from Pet Shop Boys and The Communards to New Order and Erasure. LP pressed on Angel Delight coloured vinyl, limited to 300 copies on Tablets.

Justin Majetich has previously released on Winspear Records (The Lemon Twigs, The Pills) as CARE, but this LP sees him adopt a new moniker. Maps & Atlases
Lightlessness Is Nothing New

After a long six years out of the game, Maps & Atlases return with a new LP. Anyone expecting the time-signature acrobatics of math-rock milestones like Perch Patchwork will need to leave those preconceptions at the door though, because what we have here is a full-on indie-dance record. Lightly funky in that sort of The Antlers/Reflektor-era Arcade Fire way, Lightlessness Is Nothing New is straight-up pop music.

Marc Romboy & Petar Dundov
Dimension D EP

Yer boys Marc Romboy & Petar Dundov return to Systematic (Steve Lawler, Will Saul) with their second joint EP of 2018. Dimension D works the same channels as its predecessor Caper Tran. Both the title track and ‘Meteor Shower’ are the sort of melodious big-room tech-house tunes that KiNK - another former collaborator of Romboy’s - would be proud of.

Marco Beltrami
A Quiet Place (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

You might have heard that John Krasinski’s 2018 movie A Quiet Place doesn’t feature a whole lot of talking. As such, it was all the more important that whoever Krasinski chose to do the music came through with the goods in order to adequately fill all that empty space. Scream/Resident Evil composer Marco Beltrami did just that. His score is yer classic high-octane horror romp, all sawing strings and pummelling tom-toms.

Marco Shuttle
The Moon Chant EP

The latest drop on The Bunker New York (Donato Dozzy, Gunnar Haslam) comes courtesy of returning hero Marco Shuttle. These three tracks on The Moon Chant demonstrate just why Shuttle is such a favourite down at The Bunker. This is a record of sleek, sexy NYC house that occasionally crosses over into acid - see closer ‘Curve Pericolose’ on that front.

Marisa Anderson
Cloud Corner

Portland’s Marisa Anderson is a masterful exponent of what was once described as American Primitive guitar. Her music is steeped in blues, country and bluegrass traditions, and delivered with an understated confidence. This is her first for Thrill Jockey, and sees her utilising acoustic guitar alongside her customary electric, as well as electric piano. Essential for roots nerds or anyone into the John Fahey / Jack Rose / Glenn Jones continuum.

Mark Isham
Arkangel: Black Mirror

Fire Records are the latest label to enter the Black Mirror soundtrack game. They’ve managed to snag Mark Isham’s score for Season Four episode Arkangel. Isham’s worked on plenty of uncanny pictures in his time - Crash, Point Break, Blade, you get the idea. Given that this is music for Black Mirror we’re willing to wager that Isham might have cranked the weird factor even further than usual here.

Mark Kozelek & Sean Yeaton
Yellow Kitchen

Why does Mark Kozelek have so many friends? Here he sings over music made by Sean Yeaton (Parquet Courts) and features guest appearances by Will Oldham, Steve Shelley, Jim White and an actual woman in Holly Throsby. Let’s hope Kozelek kept his views to himself in the latter session. Very limited (to 300) CD only release.
