Ailie Ormston
The Sedate

Ailie Ormston is back, though not quite as you knew her. The affable, wry dreariness of her band ******** gives way on this solo effort to something harder, more minimal and even *gulp* deconstructive. Fortunately, Ailie doesn’t take this stuff as seriously as many other musicians seem to and the result is crucially as entertaining as it is enlightening. Apparently all done with just one drum machine and one synth, and all.

Anemone
Beat My Distance

Debut album from Anemone, a group project emerging from cold-but-creative Montreal. Beat My Distance is, however, as bright and excited as the pastel-coloured cover art, with sunny guitar tones and a psychedelic mood, led by the pop vocals and sharp lyricism of Chloe Soldevila. Released by Luminelle Recordings.

Angel-Ho
Death Becomes Her

The vital Angel-Ho lands on Hyperdub for her sophomore LP. Across Death Becomes Her we find the NON Worldwide founder turning out a selection of futuristic club jams that powerfully represent her experiences as a trans woman. Synthesizing sounds from South Africa, Atlanta, London and everywhere in between, Angel-Ho's latest offering will have the competition playing catch-up once again. The guestlist includes Gaika, Nguzunguzu’s Asmara Maroof and Queezy.

Anton Eger
Æ

The music that jazz drummer Anton Eger serves up on his debut solo LP Æ has got that Dirty Loops/Vulfpeck vibe to it. As this Norman Records™ description writer has learned that you can’t change people, he’ll remain diplomatic and simply say that Eger can undoubtedly play complicated parts very proficiently.

Attic Lights
Love In The Time Of Shark Attacks

Attic Lights drop their second LP for Elefant (BMX Bandits, The Primitives). Love In The Time Of Shark Attacks is a record that can back up its fun title with some fun songs. Anyone already familiar with the band’s work will be pleased to know that their ability to churn out charming ditties ala The Lemonheads/Teenage Fanclub remains in good nick.

audiobooks
Friends In The Bubble Bath Remixes

Everyone is a fan of audiobooks except us at Norman Records. And maybe that's not fair on the others who work here  - it probably just comes down to me not liking them. I tell you who does like them though, Welsh songstress Gwenno, and the guy from Factory Floor both of which are really happy to provide remixes. (David) Wrench does a mix too but he's already in the band so doesn't count.

BADBADNOTGOOD & Little Dragon
Tried

Canadian jazz outfit, BADBADNOTGOOD, have teamed up with Swedish electronic band, Little Dragon for a 7” single. The single is called Tried. It should appeal to fans of other acts who combine jazz, pop and other elements such as Flying Lotus, Thundercat and Blood Orange. 7" single on Ninja Tune.

Big Wild
Superdream

The band name is Big Wild and the LP is called Superdream, so it's wise to leave any expectations of a shy and retiring affair at the door. As expected the debut full-length from the one born Jackson Stell is about as maximalist as electronic music gets these days. Songs such as ‘Maker’ and ‘Joypunks’ (you’ve really got to start putting spaces between your words, dude) are E-number-pop of the Passion Pit/M83 school.

bis
Slight Disconnects

Bis be back! Again! After having broken up and reformed a couple times since they started out in 1994, the Glaswegian band look like they've stuck with a bit longer this time with Slight Disconnects, their second album in five years. After all this time Bis remain masters of the indie pop chorus, and have even managed to fit in a bit of reflection on the last 25 years.

Blood Red Shoes
Get Tragic

Look how airbrushed they are now. This is probably the point in the biography of Blood Red Shoes where all hell breaks loose. They'd already split up once and gone off in very separate ways before reconvening until the guitarist broke her arm after falling off a motorbike. Her mother might well be furious with her but it led to the band using more synths and exploring new sounds and then going to LA (as you do) to make this 'comeback' album. It's one of those that could be brilliant or terrible. Let's find out...

Brainwaltzera
Epi-Log

As the old saying goes, one person’s EP is another person’s mini-LP. However, Brainwaltzera can’t seem to to make up their mind which side to come down on - we heard that the six-track Epi-Log was the latter, but the FILM Records Bandcamp thinks otherwise. Whatever it is, it’s another fine release from the mysterious producer. The tracks here include retrofuturist jams ala Jam City’s Dream A Garden (‘Bad Endgar’), lurching IDM (‘CountDempops’) and Brainfeeder-style MPC work (‘Laif Of Smit’).

Carson McHone
Carousel

Carson McHone is, obviously, an alt-country artist. Her new album Carousel is an eleven track set of good stuff, with a bit of modern (sixties) influences in there along with the honk and the tonk. If you are doing country, you’ve got to do it right, and Carson has the songwriting and the vocal chops to pull it off with style. Out on Loose.

Chain Wallet
No Ritual

Chain Wallet recorded their new album No Ritual in a beach cabin in Norway: does this mean we can hear some surf guitar influences amidst the fuzz here? Quite possibly. No Ritual also features the vocals of shoegazer Chiara Cavallari, adding a lush extra element to the Chain Wallet sound. On Jansen.

Chris Potter
Circuits

Now, those who don’t know what’s up might assume that an album named Circuits, with cover art like that, was gonna be a suite of modular synth wogglings or Mego electro-fizz… But they would be wrong! Chris Potter is a noted saxophonist, and this album features him and his band jazing out big-time! Nice. On Edition Records.

Clarence Séti
Jungle Quest

We don’t know much about this material that Clarence Seti put together in 1991, partly because it was only ever a demo CD. But all that matters is the music, these twelve tracks that we are now able to hear. Jungle Quest will certainly require you to have a taste for digital keyboards, and Seti really lays into his collection here, but this will charm many. Out on Lily Record.

Clint Mansell
Happy New Year, Colin Burstead (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Clint Mansell is now more well-known for being a composer of film scores rather than being in Pop Will Eat Itself, and perhaps that’s a good thing as he seems to be pretty good at his current career. He already has scores to Pi, Moon, High Rise and Black Mirror under his belt. His latest score is for Ben Wheatley’s new film, Happy New Year, Colin Burstead. It should match the film well as it starts off with a considered use of woodwinds and being hypnotic and ethereal in nature, before twisting into something much darker and unhinged. LP and CD on Invada.

Cochemea
All My Relations

Cochemea Gastelum is likely best known for being a sax player with Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings. All My Relations, on Daptone of course, is a profoundly personal reflection on his life. Jazz meets the music of his Yaqui and Mescalero Apache Indian heritage for an album written collectively and through improvisation.

Cory Kilduff
When It All Gets To Be Too Much

Cory Kilduff was raised on a diet of ‘80s movies. Therefore purveyor of teen angst, John Hughes, played a huge part in his life. When It All Gets To Be Too Much is inspired by actress Molly Ringwald’s more emotional moments on screen. Coloured vinyl LP, limited to 500 copies on Burning Witches Records.

Cucina Povera (who shares her moniker with the 309th best restaurant in Thessaloniki), real name Maria Rossi, is a sound artist and vocalist. Zoom is her very raw document of places and spaces she has found herself in. Damon Zucconi
Untitled Substance

Debut music release from Philadelphia based tech focussed artist Damon Zucconi. Known primarily for his visual work, including a piece for Arca, on Untitled Substance Zucconi takes his visual practice of "perceptual recognition manipulation and digital mis-engineering" and applies it to music. The result is some truly gnarly Baltimore inspired club music and a number of more abstract interludes.

David Bowie
Let’s Dance

Trust David Bowie to make one of the most commercially successful records of the 80s. After his Berlin trilogy where he explored the more art rock side of things he thought hey feck it I'm going to dye my hair bleach blonde work with Nile Rogers and become a proper pop star for a bit. This contains all those mega hits  - China Girl, Let's Dance, Modern Love and that's just the first three tracks.

David Bowie
Tonight

After David Bowie released Let's Dance he was as big as he'd ever been and decided to strike while the iron was hot. The resulting album is 1984's Tonight, which was largely successful at keeping the general public interested in him. For all its commercial ambitions Tonight remained a Bowie album, with the video for Blue Jean really being a 20 minute short film.

David Bowie
Never Let Me Down

What are we to make of the David Bowie album that the man himself disliked the most? The album he has described as being "awful", an album he wondered why he recorded? Whatever he thought of it, 1987's Never Let Me Down remains interesting because the man was so interesting, especially as it was conceived in tandem for the ridiculously over the top Glass Spider tour.

David Vassalotti
Guitar Dream

David Vassalotti is probably best known as being the guitarist with Floridian 4AD indie band, Merchandise. Guitar Dream is his third solo album and was produced by his band mate, Merchandise vocalist, Carson Cox. It is sort of a break-up album featuring a revolving cast of crestfallen characters. The songs are more akin to the work of his band than his previous more experimental albums. LP and CD on Wharf Cat Records.

Dead Witches
The Final Exorcism

More thick, chunky, guitar gnarl from Dead Witches. The Final Exorcism mines an entertaining seam of doomy gothic religion (‘Fear The Priest’!) and fuzzed-out riff churn. Dead Witches play it like they mean it, and it sounds just right. Out on the most literally named label in the game, Heavy Psych Sounds.

Deer Tick
Mayonnaise

In 2017, Rhode Island rock/folk/rock/country/rock band Deer Tick released two compilation albums, Vol.1 and Vol.2. Now they’re giving us Mayonnaise, which is a close relative, containing alternative versions of songs first released on the two volumes. What I want to know, however, is why did they call this Mayonnaise when the first two had such prosaic names? Surely Mayonnaise should be called Vol.1 & 2 v2.0, shouldn’t it? LP on Partisan Records incl. Bonus 7”.

Entracte Twist
Entracte Twist

Self-titled album on Requiem Pour Un Twister from Parisian band Entracte Twist. Post-punk in the 70s style which means: jangly guitars, driving drums and a tasteful amount of synthesiser. This is the sort of music that is described as being effortlessly cool, which certainly isn't helped by the band singing in the language of effortlessly cool, French.

Frances Cone

Francis Cone is classically trained, has a grandmother who studied at Julliard and a father who was a opera singer. All of which makes me so depressed about the state of my existence that I can barely tell you anything about this journey through sweeping harmonies and emotive vocals.

Gareth Dickson
Orwell Court

Gareth Dickson is a long-term collaborator of Vashti Bunyan’s and a deep-reaching songwriter / musician in his own right. Orwell Court is his fourth full-length solo album, continuing his path of quiet, private sounding music. These are songs for voice and folk guitar, but the rich layers of production and instrumental augmentation make ambient texture just as important. CD release from 12k.

Go Dark
Neon Young

Bella Union, home to Beach House, Horse Thief, Mercury Rev, Pom Poko, Psychic Markers and many other two-word bands add two-word band Go Dark (Crash Gallegos and Anticon veteran Doseone Drucker) to their roster. No doubt the label was delighted to discover that the album too boasts a two-word title, Neon Young. Moreover it’s a fine wodge of cyberpunk synthpop, full of aggressive energy and razor production.

Raging Tender

Downwards offers us up another hard-hitting club 12”: nothing surprising there, but wait, Raging Tender is made up of songs! Harriet Brown
Mall Of Fortune

Get ready to hit the dancefloor with Mall Of Fortune, the second album from cool guy Harriet Brown. His beautiful falsetto vocals are soulful and funky, and they are supported by the slickest of production. Features guest vocal spots from Felicia Douglass and Ana Roxanne. Released by Innovative Leisure.

Hauschka
A Different Forest

Hauschka, one of the piano lads who continue to dominate the world of accessible contemporary classical music, returns with his debut for Sony Classical. Best known for his work on the prepared piano (essentially filling the instrument with a bunch of variously relevant stuff), on A Different Forest he has opted for a purer approach. This album is heartfelt and imbued with narrative, but no less playful than he's known for being.

Herbie Hancock
Mwandishi

Mwandishi by Herbie Hancock was originally released in 1970. It saw the keyboard ace depart from his jazz roots for the first time, however, there was plenty of improvisation going here. The departure from jazz was most obvious in the use of electronic devices and the choice of a forward thinking group of musicians to back him.

Horror Section
Horror Section

My mind is blank when I read 'grindhouse cinema inspired punk-rock'. Honestly, nothing. If you're like me and your mind is also completely and utterly void of what this kinda' clutching-at-straws genre could be, then maybe we should all listen to Horror Section's self titled debut release and join the other 1990 Horror Section fans on Facebook and dance around to this record. Available on vinyl LP and CD and released on Eccentric Pop Records.

Hot Lunch
Seconds

Hot Lunch hail from San Francisco’s Bay Area. They channel proto-metal bands such as Blue Cheer and MC5. Seconds is, believe it or not, their second album. You know what you’re going to get here - high energy, in-your-face, fuzzy rock n roll - and why the hell not, Mothercruncher? It seems, also, that they’ve set themselves on a path to obvious album titles. I look forward to their third album - Dessert. LP and CD on Tee Pee

Hot new British soft rock prospect Isaac Gracie's self-titled debut album comes out on the tail of a series of well received singles.  On it the young Londoner gets to grips with himself and his anxieties. Virgin EMI have very kindly given us some indies only yellow vinyl copies of this limited to 500 copies.

Jealous Of The Birds
Wisdom Teeth

Jealous of the Birds returns after 2016’s Parma Violets. Naomi Hamilton’s new EP Wisdom Teeth finds the Northern Irish indie songwriter pondering such topics as a life in music and the reconciliation of inner and outer selves. She does so with dextrous, poetic lyrics and excellent, folky choruses, in which her voice takes off beautifully.

The year marked a transition point for Coltrane, he would go on to record 1964's 'Crescent' and 'A Love Supreme', of course. Available as a 5x LP box set and a 3x CD set and include artwork featuring original collages. On Impulse!

Following on from unions with Paula Temple, Sean Carpio and Demian Licht we now have the fruits of his labour alongside Kamikaze Space Programme.
