Ailie Ormston
The Sedate

Ailie Ormston is back, though not quite as you knew her. The affable, wry dreariness of her band ******** gives way on this solo effort to something harder, more minimal and even *gulp* deconstructive. Fortunately, Ailie doesn’t take this stuff as seriously as many other musicians seem to and the result is crucially as entertaining as it is enlightening. Apparently all done with just one drum machine and one synth, and all.

Al Lover
Cave Ritual

Producer Al Lover continues to extend the inexplicable fondness musicians have for diamond shapes on their album covers with Cave Ritual, which I believe also has some music: a fascinating mix of fiery psych riffs, gooey synth and real producer shit makes this one up, the beats as firm and thrilling as ever. If Michael Bay ever makes a film on a handheld camera, he knows who to call.

Attic Lights
Love In The Time Of Shark Attacks

Attic Lights drop their second LP for Elefant (BMX Bandits, The Primitives). Love In The Time Of Shark Attacks is a record that can back up its fun title with some fun songs. Anyone already familiar with the band’s work will be pleased to know that their ability to churn out charming ditties ala The Lemonheads/Teenage Fanclub remains in good nick.

Basic Rhythm
Dough Boy / Can't You See

Up for some gritty grime haunted by the ghosts of pirate radio? Because London’s Basic Rhythm (a.k.a., East Man) has it in spades, as usual. Here it’s a pair of tunes for Arcola, housed in a swishly foiled, die-cut outer sleeve. ‘Dough Boy’ is massive stuff. You’ll hear the word “dough” many times. Flip ‘Can’t You See’ is just as muscular, but warmer and more generous with the pads. Fab stuff.

Black Merlin
Kode

Die Orakel (Upsammy, Roman Flügel) with an EP of frosty techno here. In fact, Black Merlin’s Kode isn’t really techno at all, more a series of spooky modular loops that cast but a cursory glance at the dancefloor. It’s eerie and oddly compelling stuff - think Hieroglyphic Being, Dolo Percussion and Thomas Fehlmann.

Carson McHone
Carousel

Carson McHone is, obviously, an alt-country artist. Her new album Carousel is an eleven track set of good stuff, with a bit of modern (sixties) influences in there along with the honk and the tonk. If you are doing country, you’ve got to do it right, and Carson has the songwriting and the vocal chops to pull it off with style. Out on Loose.

Clarence Séti
Jungle Quest

We don’t know much about this material that Clarence Seti put together in 1991, partly because it was only ever a demo CD. But all that matters is the music, these twelve tracks that we are now able to hear. Jungle Quest will certainly require you to have a taste for digital keyboards, and Seti really lays into his collection here, but this will charm many. Out on Lily Record.

Dahlia Sleeps
Love, Lost

Dahlia Sleeps are an electronic duo made up from producer Luke Hester and vocalist Lucy Hill.  Their music has had bloggers likening them to acts such as London Grammar, Cat Power, The xx and Daughter. Love, lost  is certainly filled with emotional hooks and delivered with a fragile and soulful touch. Transparent vinyl 12" EP on Beatnik Creative.

Damon Zucconi
Untitled Substance

Debut music release from Philadelphia based tech focussed artist Damon Zucconi. Known primarily for his visual work, including a piece for Arca, on Untitled Substance Zucconi takes his visual practice of "perceptual recognition manipulation and digital mis-engineering" and applies it to music. The result is some truly gnarly Baltimore inspired club music and a number of more abstract interludes.

DJ Muggs
Soul Assassins: Dia Del Asesinato

Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs drops the latest record in his intermittent Soul Assassins series. Soul Assassins: Dia Del Asesinato avoids falling into the trap of being too retroist by balancing out old-timey hardheads such as Raekwon and MF Doom with newer blood like Freddie Gibbs. The beats are beats by DJ Muggs, so they sound like that.

Eliza and the Bear

A few years ago Eliza and the Bear seemed destined to be the next big thing. Things didn’t take off as their major label would have like so they were unceremoniously dropped. Making it and writing about anxiety and depression has been a valuable cathartic exercise for them. LP and CD on Be-Known.

Evoken
Hypnagogia

The moody bastards at Profound Lore (Bell Witch, Pallbearer) with another record of unrelentingly intense metal here. This one comes courtesy of New Jersey doom OGs Evoken. Hypnagogia is a sludgy delight, all thick walls of guitar and merciless vocal grunts. It’s very well produced too - the guitars on ‘Valorous Consternation’ sound melodic and meaty all at once.

Eyes Of Love are the crew of Andrea Schiavelli, a Brooklyn, NY songwriter, and the group includes members of bands like Horn Horse, Sweet Baby Jesus and The Cradle. Goblin
Suspiria

Handy. Now that Thom Yorke has composed the soundtrack for the original, we are thinking you may want to hear Goblin's original. Well here it is, the soundtrack once touted as Goblin's scariest which is full put pounding thwacking and howling. Far too scary to listen to at home with the lights out. Director Dario Argento liked it so much he changed some of the script to fit the pre-written music.

Kamikaze Space Programme & Eomac
ETXC004

Eomac has had a busy 2018. As well as dropping his Reconnect LP and the accompanying Resist All Dogma EP on his own Eotrax imprint he has had a part in four collaborative records for his ETXC series. Following on from unions with Paula Temple, Sean Carpio and Demian Licht we now have the fruits of his labour alongside Kamikaze Space Programme. ETXC004’s ‘Environment 1’ revolves around a lopsided techno locked groove, while ‘Environment 2’ is full of hissing synth drones.

Actually a remarkably strong listening experience. From Ship To Shore PhonoCo.

Lowtec
Light Surfing

In the promotion of Lowtec’s new album ‘Light surfing’, there’s talk of “murky bangers” and “sideways beauty”, essential the satisfaction of dance rhythm but achieved in a wayward and unpredictable manner. Lowtec operates with a minimal aesthetic, but it’s one of great economy and precision, with care placed on both caressing and baffling the senses.

Matt Whitehead & No Data Available present Manor House Boys
Temple Of Set EP

Acid fiend Matt Whitehead teams up with No Data Available for an EP of Detroit-indebted club fodder under the Manor House Boys tag. The best of the Motor City’s techno, house and electro sounds are channelled by the quartet of tracks on Temple Of Set. Opener ‘Full Resonance’ and closer ‘Panic In Flat 13’ are straight 303 wig-outs, while ‘Sahara’ and the title track bulk things out with some big-room beats. Unsurprisingly, this one’s out via Super Rhythm Trax.

Michael Hoenig
The Blob (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Although it’s essentially about an animate piece of strawberry jam, the 1958 original gave me quite the nightmares as a child. Here’s the soundtrack to the even-creepier 1988 remake of The Blob by Michael Hoenig. Hoenig went for something a little more sober than the original’s bouncy theme song, whose lyrics included: “Beware of the Blob - it creeps and leaps and glides and slides across the floor, right through the door…”. Hoenig chose wisely.

Mix Mup
Clear Drive EP

Here we find The Trilogy Tapes (Anthony Naples, Bullion) inna Mix Mup style. Back on Will Bankhead’s label for the first time since 2015, the latest release from Lorenz Lindner’s long-running project is a typically idiosyncratic collection of deep house/techno experiments. Cuts like the title track bring to mind a more glitchy rendering of Young Marco’s woozy Balearia, while the grunting anti-groove of ‘Flair 2’ nods to the recent TTT drop from Parris.

Modeselektor
I Am Your God / Bronko

In the run up to their next album Modeselektor have given the DJs a head start with the release of I Am Your God / Bronko on 12". The press release describes them as "abysmal" but I'm guessing they don't mean in the bad way. This is tough industrial techno built from the sort of crisp sounds we've all come to expect from the German duo.

NONN
XVII

Second album of brooding post-punk and gnarled electronics from Scandinavian artist Christian Eldefors, also known as NONN. Following his debut record last year, Eldefors has now roped in a full band - one member being his brother Alexander - in doing so creating a denser and more claustrophobic sound. It's a cohesive but varied record, switching from taught menace to goth inflected 80s style pop.

Pieces Of A Pensive State Of Mind
Missin' You EP

Many of you will have been waiting on this one for some time. Back in 1994 the Dutch producer Frank de Groodt released Missin’ You as Pieces Of A Pensive State Of Mind. The U-Trax release has become something of a connoisseur's piece in the intervening years, and the distinctive electro-techno style of the tunes here is what keeps it in the bag of DJs such as Hunee. A quarter-century on from its first issue (pretty much to the day) Missin’ You has now been remastered and given a new lease of life.

Purple Image
Purple Image

*Extremely John Lydon voice* Purple Imaaa-aaaaaage! Purple Imaaa-aaaaaage! Of course, this LP actually has nothing to do with The Artist Formerly Known As Johnny. Quentin Sirjacq
COMPANION

French composer Quentin Sirjacq plies his trade writing film scores in his homeland. He’s also released a few albums unrelated to films too. Companion is his latest beautifully delicate mix of plinks and plonks and electronica. It follows up 2016’s Far Islands And Near Places. Companion has a similar feel to its predecessor but the songs and orchestrations develop in new way, adding another interesting layer to Sirjacq’s music. CD on Schole.

R.H.G.T.
Depersonalisation

R.H.G.T. - Red Hook Grain Terminal to you, Jordan Edge to his mum - drops a cassette of brutalised electronica through the always excellent Opal Tapes (D.U.D.S., Gondwana). Depersonalisation has three modes: abrasive deconstructed club fare that sits at the limit of what Yves Tumor could come up with; hissing lo-fi beats that sound like a really beaten-up Madlib record being played on a really beaten-up turntable; and forays into pure industrial noise ala Prurient. Depersonalisation is not exactly easy on the ears, but it’s very good stuff.

As the snow flies on a cold and grey Chicago mornin', a poor little baby child is born - in Shigeto. That’s pretty much where the similarities with Elvis end for the Detroit artist, mind. On Weighted, Shigeto comes through with a selection of classic Midwest club tackle. ‘Fight Club’ and ‘Ooh Ooh’ are terse 808 techno, while the Ian Fink-featuring ‘The Line Up’ is closer to Moodymann’s Mahogani Music.
