Latest reductions from February 2019

Our monthly round-up of all the stuff you haven't been buying and that we need to get shut of before our accountant does himself a mischief. And this month we've knocked off 15% rather than the usual 10%...cos it's March, and we have year-end accounts to think about!

Ailie Ormston
The Sedate

Ailie Ormston is back, though not quite as you knew her. The affable, wry dreariness of her band ******** gives way on this solo effort to something harder, more minimal and even *gulp* deconstructive. Fortunately, Ailie doesn’t take this stuff as seriously as many other musicians seem to and the result is crucially as entertaining as it is enlightening. Apparently all done with just one drum machine and one synth, and all.

Big Wild
Superdream

The band name is Big Wild and the LP is called Superdream, so it's wise to leave any expectations of a shy and retiring affair at the door. As expected the debut full-length from the one born Jackson Stell is about as maximalist as electronic music gets these days. Songs such as ‘Maker’ and ‘Joypunks’ (you’ve really got to start putting spaces between your words, dude) are E-number-pop of the Passion Pit/M83 school.

Carson McHone
Carousel

Carson McHone is, obviously, an alt-country artist. Her new album Carousel is an eleven track set of good stuff, with a bit of modern (sixties) influences in there along with the honk and the tonk. If you are doing country, you’ve got to do it right, and Carson has the songwriting and the vocal chops to pull it off with style. Out on Loose.

Clarence Séti
Jungle Quest

We don’t know much about this material that Clarence Seti put together in 1991, partly because it was only ever a demo CD. But all that matters is the music, these twelve tracks that we are now able to hear. Jungle Quest will certainly require you to have a taste for digital keyboards, and Seti really lays into his collection here, but this will charm many. Out on Lily Record.

Clint Mansell
Happy New Year, Colin Burstead (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Clint Mansell is now more well-known for being a composer of film scores rather than being in Pop Will Eat Itself, and perhaps that’s a good thing as he seems to be pretty good at his current career. He already has scores to Pi, Moon, High Rise and Black Mirror under his belt. His latest score is for Ben Wheatley’s new film, Happy New Year, Colin Burstead. It should match the film well as it starts off with a considered use of woodwinds and being hypnotic and ethereal in nature, before twisting into something much darker and unhinged. LP and CD on Invada.

Damon Zucconi
Untitled Substance

Debut music release from Philadelphia based tech focussed artist Damon Zucconi. Known primarily for his visual work, including a piece for Arca, on Untitled Substance Zucconi takes his visual practice of "perceptual recognition manipulation and digital mis-engineering" and applies it to music. The result is some truly gnarly Baltimore inspired club music and a number of more abstract interludes.

Boy Erased (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

A coming-of-age film, Boy Erased has an original score composed by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans. It's a highly emotive, piano-driven collection whilst aiming not to detract from the on-screen emotion. Containing original material by Jónsi (Sigur Rós) and Troye Sivan.

David Vassalotti
Guitar Dream

David Vassalotti is probably best known as being the guitarist with Floridian 4AD indie band, Merchandise. Guitar Dream is his third solo album and was produced by his band mate, Merchandise vocalist, Carson Cox. It is sort of a break-up album featuring a revolving cast of crestfallen characters. The songs are more akin to the work of his band than his previous more experimental albums. LP and CD on Wharf Cat Records.

Deer Tick
Mayonnaise

In 2017, Rhode Island rock/folk/rock/country/rock band Deer Tick released two compilation albums, Vol.1 and Vol.2. Now they’re giving us Mayonnaise, which is a close relative, containing alternative versions of songs first released on the two volumes. What I want to know, however, is why did they call this Mayonnaise when the first two had such prosaic names? Surely Mayonnaise should be called Vol.1 & 2 v2.0, shouldn’t it? Eliza and the Bear
Group Therapy

A few years ago Eliza and the Bear seemed destined to be the next big thing. Things didn’t take off as their major label would have like so they were unceremoniously dropped. Their new album Group Therapy, was written during this upheaval and has served as the title suggests it would. Making it and writing about anxiety and depression has been a valuable cathartic exercise for them. LP and CD on Be-Known.

Evoken
Hypnagogia

The moody bastards at Profound Lore (Bell Witch, Pallbearer) with another record of unrelentingly intense metal here. This one comes courtesy of New Jersey doom OGs Evoken. Hypnagogia is a sludgy delight, all thick walls of guitar and merciless vocal grunts. It’s very well produced too - the guitars on ‘Valorous Consternation’ sound melodic and meaty all at once.

Eyes Of Love are the crew of Andrea Schiavelli, a Brooklyn, NY songwriter, and the group includes members of bands like Horn Horse, Sweet Baby Jesus and The Cradle. Bella Union, home to Beach House, Horse Thief, Mercury Rev, Pom Poko, Psychic Markers and many other two-word bands add two-word band Go Dark (Crash Gallegos and Anticon veteran Doseone Drucker) to their roster. No doubt the label was delighted to discover that the album too boasts a two-word title, Neon Young. Moreover it’s a fine wodge of cyberpunk synthpop, full of aggressive energy and razor production.

The year marked a transition point for Coltrane, he would go on to record 1964's 'Crescent' and 'A Love Supreme', of course. In the promotion of Lowtec’s new album ‘Light surfing’, there’s talk of “murky bangers” and “sideways beauty”, essential the satisfaction of dance rhythm but achieved in a wayward and unpredictable manner. Lowtec operates with a minimal aesthetic, but it’s one of great economy and precision, with care placed on both caressing and baffling the senses.

Mix Mup
Clear Drive EP

Here we find The Trilogy Tapes (Anthony Naples, Bullion) inna Mix Mup style. Back on Will Bankhead’s label for the first time since 2015, the latest release from Lorenz Lindner’s long-running project is a typically idiosyncratic collection of deep house/techno experiments. Cuts like the title track bring to mind a more glitchy rendering of Young Marco’s woozy Balearia, while the grunting anti-groove of ‘Flair 2’ nods to the recent TTT drop from Parris.

Second album of brooding post-punk and gnarled electronics from Scandinavian artist Christian Eldefors, also known as NONN. Following his debut record last year, Eldefors has now roped in a full band - one member being his brother Alexander - in doing so creating a denser and more claustrophobic sound. Italian legend DJ/Producer Marco Passarani (Nature, Peacefrog, Generator, Skam, Numbers etc.) drops his first full-length in six years on Dusseldorf imprint Offen Music. Nothing to upset the apple-cart across the eight tracks of W.O.W., just eight cuts of perky club fare replete with pattering 808s and swaying melodies. ‘Get Down’ has a bit of an acid flare to it, but other than that this LP is the soundtrack to the last beach party of the summer.

R.H.G.T.
Depersonalisation

R.H.G.T. - Red Hook Grain Terminal to you, Jordan Edge to his mum - drops a cassette of brutalised electronica through the always excellent Opal Tapes (D.U.D.S., Gondwana). Depersonalisation has three modes: abrasive deconstructed club fare that sits at the limit of what Yves Tumor could come up with; hissing lo-fi beats that sound like a really beaten-up Madlib record being played on a really beaten-up turntable; and forays into pure industrial noise ala Prurient. Depersonalisation is not exactly easy on the ears, but it’s very good stuff.

Rachel Zeffira
Elizabeth Harvest (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Rachel Zeffira is primarily an oboe player, however, she’s also a soprano and can turn her hand to a number of other instruments. What's more, she was in Cats Eyes with Faris Badwan of The Horrors. Her classical background made her an ideal candidate to take on the score for the Sebastian Gutierrez film, Elizabeth Harvest. Using Erik Satie’s Sarabande as a thematic base, the score becomes less conventional and more experimental as it progresses. Clear vinyl LP on Invada.

Sourakata Koite
En Hollande

Awesome Tapes From Africa by name, awesome tapes from Africa by nature. For the label’s latest trick they pull a reissue of Senegalese musician Sourakata Koite’s 1985 LP En Hollande out the bag. A master of the kora - a 21-string West African harp - Koite lays down a selection of ebullient, trilling tracks here. The frequent kora overdubs give the record a great feeling of motion. It’s no surprise to find out that Manu Dibango and Jacques Higelin are fans of Koite’s work.

In The Dust Of Idols

Let the existential malaise of winter well and truly set in, and do it to the new Specimens record. The boss of the excellent emerging label First Terrace, Alex Ives' solo work is marked by a keen ear for the various modes of ambient music, from Lawrence English's potent and fuzzy drone to the loops of William Basinski. In the Dust of Idols contemplates death and what comes after it, but sounds beautiful in the process.

The Moth & The Flame
Ruthless

The Moth & The Flame’s latest LP Ruthless was conceived in the shadow of singer Corey Fox donating one of his kidneys to a friend in need. A noble act indeed, and also definitely a life experience that you can spin an album’s-worth of songs out of. Said album continues the trend of The Moth & The Flame’s previous records, which is to say that it’s festival-ready U.S. indie-pop of the Naked & Famous/M83 school.

Thomas Fehlmann
1929 – Das Jahr Babylon

Thomas Fehlmann may have turned 60 last year, but despite his advancing years the part-time member of The Orb shows no signs of slowing down. In fact he’s increased his output recently - 1929 - Das Jahr Babylon is Fehlmann’s third full-length release of 2018. It might be his best, too. The music here was made as a soundtrack for a documentary/podcast series. The murky anti-techno rhythms, foggy reverbs and eerie choral samples here make for an evocative and melancholy listen.
